Short answer: Marvel Rivals modifications can risk suspension when they inject code, alter the client at runtime, change what players can see or hear, affect recoil or other combat behavior, enlarge targets, or otherwise create an uneven competitive advantage. NetEase’s October 15, 2026 notice specifically identifies memory injection, asymmetric line-of-sight changes, removed recoil or visual effects, altered footsteps and other audio, enlarged enemy models, and the files pystubber.asi and MarvelRivalsUnmountBlocker.asi as prohibited-risk examples. A suspension that was later lifted is not permission to keep using the modification.
What NetEase’s current mod notice actually says
NetEase’s October 15, 2026 announcement makes competitive fairness the central test. It says modifications can trigger anti-cheat action when they alter Marvel Rivals’ visual, auditory, or combat presentation in a way that gives one player information or control other players do not have. The notice describes those changes as disruptive to game balance and says disciplinary action will follow the applicable rules.
The examples are broader than traditional aim assistance. NetEase lists structural or texture edits that create an asymmetric line of sight, removal of recoil or visual effects, changes to footsteps or other audio cues, and enlargement of enemy models. A file described as a “skin” is therefore not automatically harmless: its practical effect matters, and a cosmetic package that changes visibility, target recognition, hit presentation, or another competitive cue can fall into the prohibited category.
The same announcement names two files whose operations directly trigger anti-cheat detection for unauthorized client modifications: pystubber.asi and MarvelRivalsUnmountBlocker.asi. Their presence or operation is a direct detection risk rather than merely a theoretical concern.

Suspensions lifted in October 2026
NetEase said suspensions issued during the preceding two days for the listed mod types were lifted. That was a case-specific remedy, not a policy change. The announcement expressly states that lifting those suspensions does not permit the mods or their modifications. Players were told to stop using the violating mods and permanently delete them and related changes. Continued use can still be punished.
How to judge a proposed change before you launch
Use all five questions below. A “yes” to any one does not prove the exact penalty, but each answer increases the risk that the change violates the public rules.
- Does it inject memory or modify the client while the game is running? Runtime loaders, injected modules and similar mechanisms are materially riskier than an untouched game installation.
- Does it change information or combat presentation? Ask whether it affects visibility, line of sight, aim, recoil, visual effects, footsteps, other audio cues, or target size.
- Does it use a listed file, script, adapter, plugin or virtual machine? The prohibited list covers more than conventional mod archives, including macros, process-inspection tools, emulation scripts, third-party plugins, virtual machines and graphics-related configuration files.
- Could it improve competitive performance even if its purpose is cosmetic? A larger enemy model, clearer effects or altered audio can change reaction time or target acquisition, so “cosmetic-only” is not a reliable safety label.
- Will it be used in an official competition? Tournament rules can be stricter than ordinary matchmaking rules and can prohibit any unauthorized configuration, even when a modification does not obviously provide an advantage.
Files and tools on the official prohibited list
NetEase’s February 26, 2025 prohibited-software notice says that using the listed software while Marvel Rivals is running may cause a forced exit and additional punishment depending on severity. The categories below are the important ones for mod users.

The list is not limited to files installed in the Marvel Rivals folder. A separate process, adapter, script or virtual-machine environment can be relevant even when the game’s own assets were never replaced.
Why anti-cheat and launch arguments do not make a mod safe
NetEase’s May 25, 2026 zero-tolerance notice says not to download, purchase, distribute or use cheats, scripts, game modifiers or illicit third-party tools. It also states that anti-cheat starts concurrently with the game client and cannot be independently disabled.
A launch parameter that hides an anti-cheat pop-up does not deactivate the anti-cheat system. Treating a hidden message as proof that detection has been turned off is therefore unsafe. The published rule is about the software and behavior being used, not merely whether a warning window is visible.

This also explains why a modification can be risky even when it appears to work offline or when another player reports no immediate penalty. Detection and enforcement can occur later, and the public notices do not promise that a particular file will be detected on the first launch.
Are Marvel Rivals skin mods bannable?
There is no blanket public exemption for skin mods. A replacement that changes only an appearance, does not inject code, does not alter visibility or audio, and is never used in a restricted competition may present less obvious risk than a recoil or model-size modification. NetEase’s notices nevertheless prohibit game modifiers and specifically reject changes that affect visual presentation or competitive balance. Because the publisher does not certify individual community files, a cosmetic label should be treated as a description of intent, not a guarantee.
Lower-risk characteristics are not approval
- The file leaves combat effects, target dimensions, audio cues and line of sight unchanged.
- It does not load an
.asimodule, inject memory or run a separate automation process. - It does not edit a graphics-rendering
.inifile or depend on a listed adapter, plugin or virtual machine. - The publisher has not announced that the specific file is approved; absence of a warning is not approval.
High-risk characteristics
- Removing smoke, flashes, recoil, hit effects or other information-bearing visuals.
- Changing footsteps, directional audio or other sound cues.
- Enlarging enemies, shrinking obstructions or creating a different line of sight.
- Using a loader, memory injector, script, adapter or process-inspection tool.
Is Nexus Mods safe for Marvel Rivals?
Nexus Mods is a discovery and hosting platform, not a safety certification for Marvel Rivals files. Its moderation policy makes clear that the existence of a mod page does not mean the content is approved or compliant with a game publisher’s anti-cheat rules. A page can describe a file accurately while the file still violates NetEase’s rules.
Before downloading any community upload, inspect what it changes rather than relying on its title or user comments. An archive that contains an executable, an .asi module, a loader, a script, a replacement graphics configuration or instructions to disable anti-cheat deserves the same caution as a file advertised as a cheat. If the author claims that a launch argument hides detection or that a virtual machine makes the change undetectable, that claim conflicts with NetEase’s published anti-cheat notice.
What to remove before launching Marvel Rivals
If you have installed a mod and want to return to an unmodified setup, remove the modification and every component it added or changed before starting the game.

- Exit the game and launcher. Do not attempt cleanup while Marvel Rivals or its anti-cheat process is still active.
- Review the mod archive and installation notes. Make a list of copied assets, loaders, scripts, configuration files and helper programs rather than deleting only the visibly changed texture.
- Delete prohibited modules and helpers. Remove
pystubber.asi,MarvelRivalsUnmountBlocker.asi, other unauthorized.asifiles, injectors, automation scripts and process-inspection tools associated with the installation. - Undo graphics and configuration edits. Restore original graphics-rendering
.inifiles and remove launch options or startup scripts added solely for the modification. A parameter that hides a warning is not a legitimate deactivation method. - Remove external devices or environments used for the change. Disconnect prohibited input adapters and do not launch through a virtual machine listed in the February 26, 2025 notice.
- Use the launcher’s repair or file-verification function if it provides one. Let it restore missing or altered official files, then restart the launcher.
- Reboot before playing. This clears a still-running helper process that could otherwise remain loaded after the files were deleted.
Keep a record of what you removed if you later need to explain a mistaken suspension. Do not reinstall a file merely to test whether detection occurs; the October 15 notice says continued use remains punishable even after a suspension is lifted.

What happens if a mod is detected?
The published notices do not provide a universal penalty schedule or a mod-specific suspension rate. They do say that prohibited software may force the game to exit and can bring additional punishment depending on severity. The October 15 announcement confirms that anti-cheat detection can directly identify unauthorized client operations, while the zero-tolerance notice frames cheats, scripts, game modifiers and illicit third-party tools as prohibited conduct.
Because no authoritative percentage or player count has been published for mod-related suspensions, claims that a particular mod has a guaranteed detection rate or a fixed number of safe launches should not be treated as established facts.
How to appeal a Marvel Rivals mod suspension
NetEase directs players who believe a ban was applied in error, or who have special circumstances, to official Customer Support. An appeal cannot turn a prohibited file into an authorized one, so remove the modification before submitting it.

- Stop launching Marvel Rivals with the mod, loader, script, adapter or altered configuration.
- Permanently delete the violating files and related changes, as requested in the October 15 notice.
- Write to official Customer Support using the account associated with the suspension.
- State the date and approximate time of the action, the exact message shown, and whether the game exited or displayed an anti-cheat warning.
- Describe the files or tools that were present and what you removed. Do not claim that a suspension was impossible merely because the file was labeled cosmetic.
- Attach only the logs, screenshots or purchase/account information that Support requests, and wait for its decision before attempting another launch.
Ignite 2026 tournament rules are stricter
The Marvel Rivals Ignite 2026 rules prohibit any use of unauthorized config, .ini, mod or macro files in any form. That wording does not require proof that the file improved aim or visibility. A file can be disallowed simply because it is unauthorized.

The organizer may skip penalty tiers for serious violations. Competitive players should therefore use a completely unmodified, organizer-compliant installation and check the event’s current rules before every match.
Practical answers to common scenarios
A replacement costume changes only colors
Color replacement alone does not establish approval. If the package also changes model geometry, target readability, effects, audio, runtime files or configuration, it moves into a named risk category. The publisher has not published a whitelist that would make every color-only package safe.

A configuration tweak removes recoil or screen effects
That is directly within the examples NetEase identifies as unfair visual or combat changes. Restore the original configuration before launching.

Changing footsteps or other audio cues can provide information unavailable to opponents and is explicitly identified as prohibited-risk behavior.
A model replacement makes enemies larger
Enlarging enemy models changes target size and can affect aiming and visibility. NetEase names this behavior specifically.
A mod works only in practice mode
Practice-mode use is not stated as an exception in the notices. The rules address the modification and the client environment, so do not assume a non-ranked mode authorizes it.
A launch option hides the anti-cheat notice
Hiding a pop-up does not disable anti-cheat. The May 25, 2026 notice says the system launches with the client and cannot be independently disabled.
Bottom line
For ordinary play, the safest rule is simple: use an unmodified Marvel Rivals client. Treat memory injection, .asi loaders, altered recoil or effects, visibility and audio changes, enlarged models, listed scripts, adapters, plugins, virtual machines and graphics-rendering .ini edits as suspension risks. A hosting page, a “cosmetic” label, a previous lifted suspension or a hidden anti-cheat message does not create permission. If you believe enforcement was mistaken, delete the modification and use official Customer Support to appeal.
