Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist are Marvel Rivals’ three official hero classes. As practical shorthand, Duelists usually focus on dealing damage, Vanguards on occupying or contesting frontline space, and Strategists on team support such as healing or utility. Those labels are starting points, not complete descriptions: each hero’s abilities determine how the character actually plays.
For a reliable choice, read the current hero page for the character you want, then check the latest balance notes. Ability values and interactions can change between versions, while the class label remains a broad guide.
What the three Marvel Rivals roles mean
Marvel Rivals uses three class labels: Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist. The labels help you form an initial expectation when selecting a hero, but they are not a promise that every character in a class behaves alike. The developer says class assignment considers a character’s lore, abilities, personality, mechanics, and style before adapting that identity into gameplay.

The most useful way to read a class is therefore: start with the common gameplay emphasis, then verify it against the individual kit.

This table is a player-friendly summary, not a formal rules document. The official design material does not provide an exhaustive mechanical definition for each class.
Duelist: the damage-oriented class
Duelists are generally the class players associate with applying direct pressure to enemy heroes. That can mean ranged attacks, close-range bursts, finishing weakened targets, or forcing opponents to retreat. “Damage dealer” does not mean that every Duelist has the same range, timing, durability, or escape options.
Black Widow as a kit-based example
The official hero material labels Black Widow as a Duelist and lists a sniper rifle together with close-range shock batons. Those two tools already show why the class name is only a starting point: a player must manage both long-range threat and a way to fight when an opponent closes the distance. The label tells you to look for offensive pressure; the weapon choices tell you how that particular hero creates it.
Questions to ask before choosing a Duelist
- Does the hero reward patience and accurate ranged attacks, or constant close-range movement?
- How does the kit create an opening: raw damage, a surprise attack, or pressure that makes an opponent abandon a position?
- What happens when the first attack fails? Check the hero’s mobility, defensive option, or ability to disengage rather than assuming every Duelist can escape.
- Can you keep contributing while changing targets, or does the hero need a specific setup?
Choose a Duelist when you enjoy actively creating eliminations and are willing to learn the exact distance, timing, and target priority of one kit. The class does not remove the need to play around allies or objectives; damage that does not affect the fight’s position may have little value.
Vanguard: the frontline and space-contesting class
Vanguards are commonly understood as heroes that contest important space and give a team a presence near the fight’s front. Their job is broader than simply “being hard to defeat.” A Vanguard may create room for teammates, challenge an enemy position, interrupt an advance, or make an objective dangerous to approach.
How to evaluate a Vanguard kit
Look for the tools that determine where a fight happens. Ask whether the hero can enter contested space, remain useful while under pressure, and make opponents respond. Then check how teammates can follow that pressure. A Vanguard whose abilities pull attention away from an ally may enable a Duelist to attack safely; another may be better at stopping an enemy push or forcing a relocation.

Frontline does not mean standing still
“Frontline” is a positional description, not an instruction to remain in one place. Good Vanguard play involves judging when to advance, when to hold, and when to give ground so the team is not split. Read the current ability descriptions for movement, defensive effects, and area control rather than importing assumptions from another hero.

That dated example illustrates why the class label should be paired with the live ability information: a patch can change how a hero creates or contests space without changing the class name.
Strategist: support, healing, and utility
Strategists are generally the team-support class. Healing is one visible form of support, but utility can also mean enabling an ally, disrupting an opponent, creating information, or changing the terms of an engagement. The important question is not whether a Strategist stands behind the team; it is how the kit turns time, positioning, and abilities into an advantage for allies.
Adam Warlock as a kit-based example
The official hero material identifies Adam Warlock as a Strategist and describes healing and team-oriented abilities. That pairing makes the class shorthand easy to see, while also showing why you should read the complete kit: a support hero still needs a plan for contributing when allies are healthy, separated, or unable to use the help immediately.
Support is an active decision
Effective Strategist play means choosing which ally, location, or moment deserves assistance. A heal used too early may not matter; a utility ability used without a follow-up may create no advantage. Study the ability descriptions for range, targets, timing, and any restrictions. Then decide whether the hero’s support tools fit the way your group actually fights.

Why class labels do not tell the whole story
The developer’s design explanation emphasizes adapting a character’s identity rather than forcing every hero into a rigid template. In its May 5, 2024 design article, the developer described the process this way: “Then comes the fun part—finding their perfect fit among our classes (VANGUARD, Duelist, Strategist) pouring in their abilities, personality, nitty-gritty mechanics, and style to create a concoction that’ll stand out against all of their other iterations.”
Loki is a useful illustration of that philosophy. The article describes him as a trickster built around illusions, surprise switches, battlefield vanishing, and shapeshifting, with a design intended to help allies and outsmart opponents. That is a dated design example, not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged. It demonstrates that a hero can express a class through unusual mechanics rather than a simple stereotype.
When comparing two heroes with the same label, compare their actual abilities instead of assuming they fill an identical job. One Duelist may prefer a long sightline while another wants close-range chaos. One Strategist may keep allies healthy while another changes how the fight unfolds. One Vanguard may specialize in holding a position while another is better at initiating or disrupting.
How to choose which role to play
1. Start with the action you want to perform
Choose Duelist if your primary satisfaction comes from creating offensive openings and converting them into damage. Choose Vanguard if you prefer deciding where the fight takes place and contesting space. Choose Strategist if you enjoy tracking allies, timing support, and making the whole team more effective.
2. Read the hero’s complete ability list
Open the current official hero page and identify the basic attack, abilities, ultimate, movement options, and defensive tools. Note what each button asks you to do: aim, remain near allies, enter a contested area, wait for a timing window, or combine abilities in a particular order.
3. Match the kit to your reliable habits
A theoretically powerful hero is a poor first choice if the kit conflicts with how you naturally play. If you lose track of ally positions, a support kit that depends on precise timing may feel demanding. If you dislike waiting for an opening, a hero built around deliberate setup may be frustrating. Pick a character whose central task you can repeat consistently, then expand your options as you learn.

4. Check what the team currently lacks
After identifying your preferred action, look at the team’s existing shape. If allies already provide heavy offensive pressure, a Vanguard or Strategist may add more practical value. If the team can hold space and sustain itself but cannot threaten opponents, a Duelist may fill the missing function. This is a decision framework, not a rule that every match requires a fixed class distribution.

Use the version number and publication date when reading patch notes. A class label can stay the same while damage, healing, cooldowns, or interactions change. If a guide and the current hero page disagree, treat the current official information as the better reference.
Ultimate energy: what the published figure actually means
A March 17, 2026 balance post states that around 80% of Ultimate Ability Energy comes from damage or healing conversion. This is a game-data statement about how ultimate energy is generated. It is not a measurement of role popularity, class balance, win rate, or match outcomes.
The figure also helps explain why role shorthand should not be read too narrowly. A Duelist can contribute to ultimate generation through damage, while a Strategist can do so through healing conversion; the statement does not mean every hero produces energy at the same rate or that one class is automatically superior. For exact rates and any later changes, consult the relevant dated balance post and current hero information.

Assuming a class is a complete playstyle
Class names summarize intent. They do not list every weapon, cooldown, movement option, or team interaction. Two heroes with one label can demand very different mechanics.
Using old ability values
Guides without a version or date can preserve obsolete numbers. The October 6, 2026 Version 20261009 Balance Post is a clear reminder to verify current details before relying on a damage, healing, or cooldown claim.

Equating support with passive play
Strategists still make positioning and timing decisions that shape a fight. Supporting an ally can involve proactive utility, not only reacting after someone takes damage.
Equating frontline with absorbing everything
Vanguard value comes from contesting and shaping space. Standing in danger without a purpose can separate the team or waste abilities; use the kit to create a favorable position.
Picking a role without learning its win condition
Before a match, state the hero’s central task in one sentence: for example, “create damage opportunities,” “hold or take space,” or “keep allies effective while applying utility.” If you cannot describe what success looks like, reread the abilities and choose a simpler starting point.
A practical first-match checklist
- Confirm the hero’s current class on the official hero page.
- Read every ability description, including the ultimate and any movement or defensive option.
- Write down the hero’s preferred range and the condition that makes the kit strongest.
- Identify one action that helps the team even when an elimination is not available.
- Play around the class’s practical purpose: damage pressure for a Duelist, contested space for a Vanguard, or ally support and utility for a Strategist.
- After the match, note which ability created value and which one you used without a clear target.
- Before copying advice from an older guide, check its version date against the latest official balance post.
Where to verify current information
The official hero pages are the best place to confirm a character’s present role label and ability descriptions. Official balance posts provide the version and date needed to interpret changes. The developer’s May 5, 2024 design article is useful for understanding design intent, especially the idea that lore, personality, mechanics, and style all influence class assignment; it should not be treated as a current ability reference.
Marvel Rivals is presented on its official site as free to play, with links to digital platform downloads. That availability information does not change what the three classes mean, but it explains why the most dependable role guidance is kept in the live, digital hero and patch information rather than in a fixed printed manual.
