If Marvel Rivals began dropping frames or hitching after a game, driver, or settings update, start with reversible checks: record your hardware and software versions, compare the in-game FPS counter with latency indicators, reinstall the latest graphics driver with a clean-install option, assign Marvel.exe to Windows high-performance graphics, and then reduce rendering settings one at a time. Players with memory pressure can also test the launcher’s shader-compilation option, while accounting for its documented trade-offs. If the problem remains, create a diagnostic archive with the publisher’s tool and send it to support. The official sources reviewed for this guide do not confirm a widespread patch-specific regression, so treat the timing as a clue to investigate rather than proof that one update is responsible.
First determine what is actually slowing down
“Stuttering” can describe several different symptoms. A low or unstable frame rate is a rendering problem: the FPS counter falls, camera movement looks uneven, or input feels delayed even when your connection is stable. Network latency is a connection problem: characters may rubber-band, actions arrive late, or the latency indicator rises while the FPS counter stays near its normal value. A latency spike should not be presented as proof of an FPS drop. Compare both indicators during the same incident.
Timing narrows the possibilities. Note whether the hitching started immediately after a Marvel Rivals update, a graphics-driver update, a Windows or settings change, or none of those. Also record whether it occurs in every match, only during the first entry after an update, or only in particular scenes. The publisher says shader compilation runs when you first enter after a new game version or graphics-driver update, so a first-entry hitch has a different lead than a slowdown that continues in every match.

Capture a short video showing the FPS and latency overlays if possible. Use the same map, training area, or a repeatable section of a match for each later comparison. Change only one setting between tests; otherwise you cannot tell which change mattered.
Check the publisher’s minimum PC requirements
Marvel Rivals lists the following minimum PC requirements in its Common Technical Issues FAQ (Marvel Rivals/NetEase Games, 2024). They are requirements stated by the publisher, not a guarantee that every qualifying computer will maintain a particular frame rate.
| Component | Publisher-stated minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or later |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics card examples | NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580, or Intel Arc A380 |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 70 GB available space |
Being above these numbers does not rule out a bottleneck. A recent patch can alter shader work or rendering load, a driver can behave differently from the previous one, and background applications can consume memory or CPU time. Conversely, being below a listed requirement makes smooth performance less likely and means that lowering settings may be necessary before more advanced troubleshooting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Reinstall the graphics driver cleanly
The official FAQ’s first software remedy for a computer that meets requirements but still stutters is to reinstall the latest GPU driver for the installed graphics-card model, using the installer’s clean-install option. Download the driver that matches your GPU from its manufacturer, close the game and other graphics-heavy applications, and select the clean-install choice in the installer when offered.
- Identify the exact GPU model in Windows’ Device Manager or your existing graphics utility.
- Obtain the current driver package for that model from the GPU manufacturer.
- Run the installer and choose its clean-install or equivalent reset option.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not insist on a reboot.
- Launch Marvel Rivals and repeat the same scene or match used for your baseline.
Record both the old and new driver dates. If the problem began with the driver rather than the game update, that timeline is important when you contact support. A clean install resets driver-level settings, so review any global frame limit, synchronization, or upscaling overrides before testing.

Assign Marvel Rivals to Windows high-performance graphics
The publisher also directs players to Windows’ per-app graphics preference. In Windows Settings, go to System → Display → Graphics, add or browse for Marvel.exe, and select the High performance option. Menu wording can vary by Windows release.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Display, then Graphics.
- Use the add or browse control to locate the game’s
Marvel.exeexecutable in the installation directory. - Open the app’s options and choose High performance.
- Save the choice, restart the game, and test under the same conditions as before.
If more than one executable appears, use the one that actually launches the game rather than a launcher helper. Do not assume that this preference raises FPS on every system; it is intended to prevent Windows from selecting a lower-power graphics device when multiple GPUs are present.

The release FAQ specifically suggests lowering settings such as texture quality, including on devices that exceed the minimum requirements. Start with the setting most likely to stress your available video memory, then test before changing another option.
- Return to the graphics menu and note the current values so you can restore them.
- Lower texture quality by one step.
- Apply the change and repeat the same scene or match.
- Compare average feel, lowest FPS, and frame-time consistency with your baseline.
- If the hitch remains, test another demanding setting individually, keeping a short log of each result.
One-at-a-time testing matters more than making every option “low.” It identifies whether the limit is likely video-memory pressure, shader workload, resolution, or another part of the render pipeline. If a setting improves stability but makes the image unacceptable, move it back one step and test a different setting instead of assuming that the lowest preset is the only solution.
When the symptom follows an update, write down the game build and driver dates while testing. That record supports a useful report without asserting that the update alone caused the problem.

Test the launcher’s shader-compilation mode when memory pressure is plausible
NetEase introduced Switch Shader Compilation Mode as an experimental launcher feature. The publisher says it can reduce game memory consumption and severe FPS drops, frozen visuals, and crashes associated with a memory shortage. It particularly suggested that players with 16 GB of RAM or less consider the option when they experience those symptoms. This is guidance for a symptom and hardware combination, not a statistic about how many players are affected.
Because launcher labels and availability can change, first check whether the option is present in your current Marvel Rivals launcher. If it is available, enable it, restart the launcher if requested, and test a repeatable scene. Do not treat the switch as a guaranteed FPS increase; its purpose is to change how shader compilation uses memory.
Understand the first-match trade-off
NetEase warns that the first rendering of some materials in a new match may briefly look abnormal or stutter before stabilizing. That short-lived effect can be expected after enabling the mode and is different from a hitch that continues throughout every match. Give the same test conditions enough time to reach the later, stabilized portion before deciding whether the setting helped.
Check the CPU-thread and frame-generation warning
The publisher warns that systems with six or fewer CPU threads may stutter more when Switch Shader Compilation Mode and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation are enabled together. If your processor falls within that threshold and both features are active, test them separately:
- Test with the shader mode enabled and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation disabled.
- Restore the previous state, then test with the shader mode disabled and frame generation enabled.
- Compare both results in the same scene and keep the combination that produces steadier frame times.
This isolates the interaction instead of blaming either feature without evidence. If neither configuration is stable, leave both in the less problematic state while you continue diagnosing other bottlenecks.

Separate rendering problems from connection problems
During a hitch, look at FPS and latency at the same moment:
- If FPS falls while latency remains near its usual value, investigate graphics load, drivers, shaders, CPU or RAM pressure, and temperatures.
- If latency rises while FPS remains stable, investigate the connection or server path rather than treating it as a rendering drop.
- If both change, capture the timing and test again; one symptom does not prove the other caused it.
Also compare Marvel Rivals with another demanding game. A problem limited to Marvel Rivals points toward its settings, shaders, files, or a game-specific interaction. Similar behavior everywhere suggests checking the driver installation, Windows configuration, thermals, background processes, or hardware health. This comparison is a diagnostic question, not a benchmark, and the official sources reviewed here publish no attributable FPS-loss benchmark or prevalence rate for post-update stuttering.
Check resource use and temperatures while reproducing the hitch
Monitoring turns a vague complaint into evidence. Reproduce the problem with an on-screen overlay or a log and watch:
- GPU utilization and temperature.
- CPU utilization, including whether one or a few threads are saturated.
- RAM use and whether Windows begins paging to disk.
- Frame rate or frame-time spikes.
- In-game latency at the same timestamps.
A GPU that is fully busy while lowering resolution or texture quality improves stability points toward rendering load. A CPU thread that remains saturated while the GPU has headroom points toward a CPU-side limit or a shader-compilation event. RAM that is nearly exhausted, especially on a 16 GB system, makes the publisher’s memory-related shader guidance more relevant. A temperature spike that coincides with clock-rate drops warrants checking airflow and cooling, but the supplied official guidance does not establish a universal temperature threshold or prescribe a particular cooling product.

Mention whether Switch Shader Compilation Mode and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation were enabled, and whether your CPU has six or fewer threads. This prevents support from asking you to repeat steps and gives the diagnostic archive useful context.
When not to buy hardware yet
The official material does not support a blanket recommendation to buy a GPU, more RAM, an SSD, or a cooling accessory for post-update FPS drops. Marvel Rivals recommends an SSD for a better experience, but its FAQ does not identify an SSD as the general fix for this symptom. Hardware changes make sense only after measurements show a sustained limit, the machine is below the stated requirements, or another component is demonstrably failing.
For example, adding RAM may address paging when memory is consistently exhausted, but it will not repair a bad driver assignment. A faster GPU may raise the rendering ceiling, but it will not resolve network latency or a shader-mode interaction on a processor with six or fewer threads. Establish the bottleneck first, preserve your baseline, and use the diagnostic report if the evidence does not point to a fix you can safely apply yourself.
A practical order of operations
Use this sequence so that each step is reversible and the result remains interpretable:
- Record hardware, Windows, game, driver, settings, FPS, latency, and symptom timing.
- Check the published minimum requirements and note whether the PC is below, near, or above them.
- Reinstall the current GPU driver with its clean-install option and reboot.
- Assign
Marvel.exeto Windows High performance graphics. - Lower texture quality or another demanding option one setting at a time and retest in the same conditions.
- If memory pressure, frozen visuals, or crashes are plausible, check the launcher for Switch Shader Compilation Mode and test it with its first-render and frame-generation trade-offs in mind.
- Compare FPS with latency and check another demanding game to classify the problem.
- Run
client_diagnose.exeand send the resulting archive to support if the issue remains.
Keep the game build and driver dates in your notes. The reviewed official notices provide durable troubleshooting steps, but they do not confirm a currently widespread October 2026 update regression or quantify how many players lose FPS after an update.
