Start with the job your team needs, not a tier list. Marvel Rivals uses three roles—Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist. Learn one hero in each role, stay near teammates, use cover, and change your plan when an opponent’s kit is creating a specific problem. Team-Ups can add powerful base and enhanced effects, but their partners and bonuses change with balance updates, so confirm the current text in the hero-select screen before building a composition.

What the three Marvel Rivals roles actually do

Role labels describe a team responsibility rather than a rigid playstyle. A good Duelist still needs positioning and timing, a Vanguard still needs damage awareness, and a Strategist contributes far more than raw healing. Your first goal is to understand what your team is missing at a given moment.

Role Primary job What success looks like Beginner focus
Duelist Deal damage and apply pressure. Forcing opponents away from useful positions, helping secure eliminations, and punishing exposed targets. Choose safe attack angles, follow the team’s focus, and avoid taking isolated fights without an escape plan.
Vanguard Frontline presence, pressure absorption, and space creation. Making room for teammates to act while drawing attention and surviving long enough for help to arrive. Move with your Strategist, use cover between engagements, and start fights where your team can follow.
Strategist Healing plus utility. Keeping allies active while using buffs, debuffs, or zone control to change the fight. Maintain line of sight to allies, rotate before being trapped, and use utility proactively rather than only reacting to damage.

Duelist: pressure that creates opportunities

Duelists are the damage-dealing role, but “deal damage” is not the same as shooting at the nearest target. Pressure can force an enemy to retreat, interrupt a setup, or make a target vulnerable to your team’s next attack. Your value rises when your damage is connected to the team’s objective: attack the opponent your Vanguard has contained, punish an enemy who has overextended, or hold an angle that prevents a rotation.

New players often leave their support alone while chasing a low-health opponent. Before pursuing, ask whether your team can see you, whether you have a route back to cover, and whether the elimination is worth the time and risk. A safe retreat that preserves your next attack is usually better than a spectacular but isolated defeat.

Vanguard: space, attention, and timing

Vanguards stand on the front line to absorb pressure and create space. That does not mean charging as far as possible or demanding every opponent’s attention indefinitely. Space is useful only if teammates can occupy it. Advance when your Duelists and Strategists are close enough to benefit, then pause behind cover while abilities recover.

When a fight turns against you, retreat in a direction your team can use rather than running through an empty side route. A Vanguard who survives and re-enters with support can protect the next engagement; one who repeatedly falls first gives the enemy an easy opening.

Strategist: support through healing and utility

Strategists provide healing and utility. Buffs, debuffs, and zone control can prevent damage, create a favorable target, or deny an area before allies need emergency healing. Watch the battlefield, not only health bars. If opponents are approaching from a side route, reposition early; if your team is grouped in a dangerous area, a control or defensive ability may be more valuable than topping off one ally.

Stay close enough to receive protection but not so close that one enemy ability reaches the entire group. Keep a retreat path and communicate when you are being pressured. A Strategist who survives can restore a broken formation; one who is eliminated first often leaves the rest of the team unable to hold space.

How a beginner should choose heroes

Try at least one hero from each role before deciding what you “main.” This exposes you to the information your teammates need: where a Vanguard can stand, how Duelist pressure is created, and which threats force a Strategist to move. After that first pass, build a small comfort pool rather than switching to a different hero every match.

  1. Start with one role you enjoy. Play enough matches to recognize your basic range, mobility, defensive tools, and safest retreat route.
  2. Learn a second role. Pick a hero whose job feels different from your first choice. This makes team selection less frustrating when a match needs another responsibility.
  3. Add a third-role option. You do not need expert-level mastery; learn the core abilities, typical engagement distance, and what information that role wants from allies.
  4. Keep a comfort pool. Two or three practiced choices are more useful than a roster of unfamiliar heroes, especially after a patch changes ability values.

When comparing two candidates, use practical questions instead of an unsupported “best hero” ranking:

  • Does the team need damage, a front line, or support and utility?
  • Do the hero’s range and mobility fit how you naturally position?
  • Can the kit address the problem currently affecting your team?
  • What Team-Up effect is shown right now, and does its partner condition fit the proposed lineup?
  • How much practice are you willing to invest before expecting consistent results?

A counterplay process that survives patches

There is no reliable permanent counter chart for Marvel Rivals. Hero abilities and balance values change, and a pairing that works in one patch may become weaker or require a different distance in the next. Use a diagnosis-and-adjustment loop instead of memorizing names.

1. Name the actual problem

Describe the opponent’s impact in concrete terms. Are they reaching your back line? Holding a doorway so nobody can advance? Surviving every attempt to focus them? Punishing allies who stand in the open? The answer points toward a response; the enemy’s name alone does not.

2. Fix positioning before changing heroes

Regroup, use cover, and shorten the distance between allies. A back-line threat is harder to exploit when your Strategist is not isolated. A space-control threat is less effective when the team approaches from a safer angle or waits for key abilities. Focus the same target when possible instead of dealing scattered damage.

3. Coordinate the response

Use the game’s communication tools to identify the threat and request help. A simple call such as “back line,” “hold,” or “focus this target” gives teammates a shared plan. Do not assume everyone sees the same danger; the player being attacked may have the most useful information about timing and direction.

4. Switch only when the kit solves the problem

If regrouping and positioning do not change the outcome, consider a hero whose abilities address the specific threat. The switch should have a reason: better reach, safer mobility, more reliable protection, stronger area denial, or another clearly relevant tool. Do not switch merely because an opponent won one duel.

5. Reassess after every major update

The official balance post dated October 6, 2026 documents hero-specific and Team-Up adjustments. Treat older videos, tier lists, and matchup advice as dated references. Verify current ability descriptions and values in the live game before relying on a remembered interaction.

Common threat patterns and the right questions

What you observe Questions to ask First response
An enemy repeatedly reaches the back line. Are supports isolated? Are flank routes watched? Can the team retreat toward cover together? Regroup, protect the threatened player, and deny the route before selecting a different hero.
An opponent controls a doorway or objective area. Are you entering through the same angle? Can you wait, split attention, or approach from cover? Change the approach and coordinate timing rather than feeding one player at a time.
A target survives every focus attempt. Are attacks landing together? Is the target receiving healing or defensive utility? Are you chasing too far? Call the target, remove or avoid the supporting pressure, and disengage if the chase is unsafe.
Your team is punished for standing in the open. Where is the nearest cover? Are abilities being used before movement? Is the Vanguard advancing beyond support range? Use cover, tighten formation, and let the front line create space where allies can actually stand.

These are response patterns, not guaranteed matchups. Exact interactions depend on the current hero kits, player execution, map geometry, and balance version.

Team-Ups: what they are and how to plan around them

Team-Ups are coordinated bonuses tied to particular hero combinations. The official hero interface presents a Base Effect and an Enhanced Effect, so the same pairing can have more than one level of benefit depending on the active conditions. Read the effect in the live interface rather than relying on a screenshot or an old list.

Why Team-Ups keep changing

Season 9 launched on July 8, 2026 with a ground-up Team-Up revamp. Later balance work continued to tune both heroes and Team-Ups, including the October 6, 2026 balance update. A composition guide written before those changes can describe an effect that no longer exists or has different activation requirements.

How to check one before locking in

  1. Open the hero-select screen and inspect the current Team-Up panel for the heroes you are considering.
  2. Read the partner condition and both the Base Effect and Enhanced Effect text.
  3. Confirm which player must select which hero, if the interface specifies an order or role.
  4. Ask whether the bonus supports your actual plan: surviving a dive, controlling an area, applying pressure, or enabling movement.
  5. Keep the lineup functional even if the Team-Up is unavailable. A bonus should improve a coherent team, not force three players onto uncomfortable heroes.

Team-Ups fit into team choices after you understand roles, not before. Start by covering the needed responsibilities, then use a current Team-Up to strengthen that plan. If activating the bonus leaves your team without a front line, reliable support, or a way to contest space, the nominal enhancement may cost more than it gives.

A simple first-session plan

Before your first match

  • Read the live ability descriptions for one Duelist, one Vanguard, and one Strategist.
  • Identify each hero’s effective range, movement option, defensive tool, and safest retreat direction.
  • Set up the communication controls you can use quickly.

During the match

  • Stay within practical support distance of at least one teammate.
  • Move from cover to cover instead of crossing open space without a reason.
  • Watch why an engagement was lost: isolation, poor timing, missed focus, or an enemy ability that controlled the area.

After a difficult fight

  1. State the problem in one sentence.
  2. Try a team adjustment on the next engagement.
  3. If it fails again, consider a role or hero change that directly addresses the cause.
  4. Check whether a recent patch altered the interaction before concluding that a matchup is permanent.

PC requirements and practical setup notes

Marvel Rivals is free to play, and the official site states that heroes are unlocked and free. The release FAQ dated December 5, 2024 lists PC system requirements and recommends installing the game on an SSD for a better experience. Those requirements are release-era guidance, so check the current official FAQ before making hardware decisions. An SSD recommendation affects loading and general responsiveness; it does not determine which role you can learn or whether a Team-Up is available.

If performance problems interfere with learning, start with the game’s own troubleshooting path: update graphics drivers, review in-game settings, repair the installation when that option is available, and use official support instructions. Avoid treating a third-party optimizer as a substitute for checking drivers, settings, or damaged files.

What to trust when advice conflicts

Prioritize the live hero-select information and current official balance notes for ability and Team-Up details. Beginner guides are useful for fundamentals such as staying with teammates, using cover, and learning one hero per role, but they are not authority for current counters or a fixed meta ranking. Community posts can show the wording new players use when they need help, yet they are individual experiences rather than representative evidence.

When a guide, video, and the in-game description disagree, play according to the current interface and test the interaction safely. Record the patch date with any notes you keep; that small habit prevents old matchup advice from becoming false certainty.
