Marvel Rivals is rated PEGI 12 on the cited UK Xbox listing for Moderate Violence. The same listing marks the game as an online 6v6 superhero shooter with Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). That means the age number is only part of the decision: parents should also consider competitive combat, voice and text chat, exposure to strangers, and paid random-item systems.
Marvel Rivals rating at a glance
The following details come from the UK Xbox storefront listing cited for this article. Ratings are regional, so the label displayed on your child’s platform may differ.
| Rating or feature | What the listing says | What parents should understand |
|---|---|---|
| Age category | PEGI 12 | The rating board considers the game suitable for players aged 12 and above under PEGI’s criteria; it is not a guarantee that every 12-year-old will enjoy or comfortably handle it. |
| Violence descriptor | Moderate Violence | Combat is a central, repeated part of play and uses superhero powers, projectiles, weapons and environmental objects. |
| Online feature | Users Interact | Players may be exposed to communications or other user-generated content from people they play with. |
| Purchases | In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) | Paid digital content can include an item whose exact contents are not known before purchase. |
| Format | Free-to-play online 6v6 superhero shooter | Online matches, account features and multiplayer communication are built into the experience. |
| Release date shown | 6 December 2024 | This is contextual information from the listing, not a measure of content or player behaviour. |
What PEGI 12 means in this game
PEGI 12 is an age classification, not a statement that the game is harmless for younger children or appropriate for every child who has reached 12. It indicates that the content falls within PEGI’s rules for a 12-and-over audience in the relevant region and version. A child’s sensitivity to fast action, losing, online pressure or hostile comments can matter more than the number on the box.
The cited listing identifies Moderate Violence, rather than a stronger violence category. It also separately identifies online interaction and random-item purchases. Those additional notices are important because the age category itself does not describe every risk associated with a connected free-to-play game.

Ratings can change when a platform updates metadata, when a rating board revises its policies, or when regional editions receive different classifications. Check the rating shown in the store used by your child, especially if you are outside the United Kingdom or are moving between Xbox, PlayStation, PC and other versions.
How violent is Marvel Rivals?
Superhero combat is the core activity
Marvel Rivals is a player-versus-player shooter in which teams of superheroes and supervillains fight repeatedly. The official game description cited for the listing refers to powers, weapons, projectiles, explosions and destructible environments. Attacks can also involve objects in the surroundings, not only a character’s signature ability.
Because matches are built around defeating opposing players and completing objectives, combat is not an occasional scene between story missions. A child who plays for an hour may see many cycles of attacking, being defeated, respawning or returning to the match. The competitive structure can make the action feel intense even when the art direction is stylized.

The available evidence supports describing the action as stylized superhero violence with a PEGI descriptor of Moderate Violence. It does not establish a universal claim about how often blood appears, nor does it justify saying that the game has no blood in every version or situation. Parents who need that level of detail should inspect the current regional rating summary or watch age-appropriate gameplay from a reliable source before allowing access.
Questions to ask about your child’s response
- Does your child become distressed by explosions, weapons or repeated on-screen defeats?
- Can they stop playing after a loss without becoming unusually angry or upset?
- Do they understand that opponents are real players rather than characters controlled only by the game?
- Can they distinguish fictional superhero action from acceptable behaviour away from the screen?
These questions address suitability, not the rating itself. Two children of the same age can react very differently to identical stylized combat.

Does Marvel Rivals contain bad language?
What the cited rating does and does not say
The Xbox and PEGI listing used here does not display a language descriptor. That means the published label does not call out profanity as a defining reason for the PEGI 12 classification. It does not prove that every line of dialogue is free from rude or strong language, and it does not provide a profanity-frequency estimate.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board’s general description of its Teen category (13+) says that category may include violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language. That is a definition of the ESRB category, not evidence that Marvel Rivals contains a particular amount or type of language. Do not convert the general ESRB wording into a specific claim about this game.
Other players can change the language environment
Even when a game’s own dialogue is acceptable to your family, online voice and text chat can introduce profanity. Players can type messages, speak through a microphone or use names and other user-generated material that the developer did not write. For that reason, the absence of a language descriptor should not be treated as a promise that a child will never hear or read bad language while playing online.
What “Users Interact” means
It is a warning about communication, not a higher age rating
ESRB defines Users Interact as possible exposure to “unfiltered/uncensored user-generated content, including user-to-user communications and media sharing via social media and networks.” The notice highlights an online feature; it does not itself raise or lower the game’s assigned age category.
In practical terms, the label tells parents that other people may affect the experience. A child could encounter insults, arguments, unwanted contact, discriminatory comments or other material that is not predictable from the game’s scripted content. The people encountered may be friends, acquaintances or strangers, depending on the account and platform settings.

The developer acknowledges abusive chat
In a moderation notice dated 16 October 2026, the Marvel Rivals team wrote: “Whether through text or voice chat, behaviors such as insults, malicious harassment, discrimination, and hate speech not only hurt other players but also destroy normal in-game communication and the overall match experience.” The notice says verified offences can lead to disciplinary action, with significantly harsher penalties for severe or repeated violations, and asks players to report problems.
Recommended Free Tools
That policy is useful, but it cannot prevent every offensive message from reaching a child. Enforcement happens after a report or review, and rules or penalties may evolve. Parents should treat reporting tools as one layer of protection rather than a substitute for account controls and supervision.
In-game purchases and random items
What the purchase descriptor tells you
The listing flags In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) and shows paid add-ons for the game’s Lattice currency. ESRB explains that this descriptor covers paid digital goods where the buyer may not know the specific item received in advance, such as an item pack or mystery award.
The descriptor confirms that randomised paid content exists in the listed version. It does not, by itself, provide the price of every offer, the odds for each item, how often offers rotate, or whether a particular purchase is necessary to play. Those details can change and should be checked in the current store and in-game purchase screens.
Are these definitely “loot boxes”?
People often use “loot box” as a broad term for paid randomised rewards. The rating language establishes that paid random items are present, but the cited material does not name every mechanic as a loot box. It is more accurate to tell a child that some purchases can produce an item selected at random and that the exact result may not be known before spending.

Controls that prevent accidental spending
- Use a child account where your platform supports one, rather than sharing an adult account.
- Turn on purchase approval or a password requirement for every transaction.
- Keep payment cards and stored wallet balances inaccessible to the child’s account.
- Explain that free-to-play does not mean every optional item is free.
- Agree in advance whether purchases are allowed, how much can be spent and who must approve them.
- Review transaction history regularly and act quickly if an unauthorised purchase appears.
Platform family-safety menus use different names, but the relevant controls are usually account permissions, spending limits, purchase authorisation and communication settings. Check the current instructions for the console or PC storefront your child uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Marvel Rivals suitable for a 12-year-old?
For a mature 12-year-old who is comfortable with stylized superhero combat and can follow online-safety rules, the PEGI 12 classification may fit. The decision is less straightforward for a child who is sensitive to action violence, struggles with competitive losses, has difficulty ignoring strangers, or is likely to make unplanned purchases.
| Family situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Child enjoys fictional action and handles losing well | Moderate violence may be acceptable, provided chat and spending are configured deliberately. |
| Child is upset by intense combat or explosions | Play together first and observe reactions before granting unsupervised access. |
| Child wants to use a microphone | Discuss strangers, insults, hate speech, blocking and reporting before enabling voice chat. |
| Child asks for frequent cosmetic or random-item purchases | Set approval requirements and a firm budget; never assume the free-to-play label prevents spending. |
| Child has previously been bullied online | Consider disabling open communication and using private play with known friends. |
How to set up safer play
- Check the local rating. Open the game’s store page on the exact platform and account your child will use. Confirm the age category and descriptors shown there rather than relying only on a search result or a different country’s listing.
- Create or select the child account. Use the platform’s family-management area to ensure permissions are attached to the child’s account and cannot be bypassed by switching profiles.
- Restrict purchases. Require an adult password or approval, disable unattended wallet top-ups and review the setting after major platform updates.
- Choose communication access. Start with voice and text chat disabled, or limited to approved friends if the platform offers that option. Explain that turning chat on is a safety decision, not a requirement for understanding the game.
- Teach block and report actions. Show your child how to mute or block a player and how to submit an in-game report. The official FAQ says cheating can be reported in-game or through the game’s official Discord support channels.
- Play a supervised session. Watch how matches, chat and purchase prompts work. Check whether the child can leave a hostile conversation and stop after a loss.
- Review after play. Ask what happened without demanding private messages or passwords. Look for repeated contact from strangers, pressure to spend, threats, discriminatory speech or a noticeable change in mood.
When to reconsider access
Pause or change the setup if your child reports repeated harassment, is afraid to join matches, cannot stop after losing, hides purchases, or encounters content that conflicts with your family rules. Disabling communication, removing payment access or restricting play to supervised sessions can be temporary measures while you decide whether the game remains appropriate.
A report should include the relevant player or message details requested by the game’s reporting form. Save transaction records if money was spent without permission. If a child receives threats or targeted discriminatory abuse, preserve evidence and use the platform’s safety process as well as the game’s reporting channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy the rating number is only one part of the decision
PEGI 12 answers a narrow classification question about the content submitted for rating. It does not measure how much time a child spends playing, how competitive matches affect them, whether strangers will behave appropriately, or how persuasive a random-item purchase can feel. Those factors come from the game’s online design, the account settings and the individual child.
For Marvel Rivals, the clearest decision points are therefore separate: moderate stylized combat, no language descriptor on the cited listing, user-to-user communication, and paid random items. Check the current regional listing, configure chat and spending controls before the first session, and revisit those settings as the child’s age and online experience change.
