Accessories and skins are separate cosmetic systems in Marvel Rivals. The game calls skins Costumes: they change a hero’s overall appearance. Accessories are hero-specific cosmetic items introduced in Season 3. Neither category is intended to change combat statistics or provide a competitive advantage; the developer says paid cosmetics provide visual changes only.

Accessories and Costumes are different item types

Players commonly call a hero’s Costume a skin, but Marvel Rivals uses Costumes as the official label. An Accessory is not another name for a Costume. It is a separate cosmetic category tied to a particular hero.

The distinction matters when you are looking through the Shop or a hero’s customization screens. A Costume is the main appearance you select for a hero. An Accessory is an additional hero-specific cosmetic item with its own acquisition path. The complete list of available Accessories is not fixed: items, events, and Shop offerings can change with patches.

Comparison Accessories Costumes (skins)
What the item is A separate cosmetic item associated with one particular hero. A hero appearance, which players often call a skin.
What changes on screen Cosmetic presentation for the associated hero. The cited introduction notes do not describe an ability or stat change. The hero’s visual appearance. Some Costumes also have documented color or visual variants.
Documented acquisition Season 3 notes say to earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific Accessories. Costumes can appear in store bundles and in other cosmetic channels such as Battle Passes, events, or achievements; the exact offer and timing vary.
Customization evidence The official notes cited here do not provide a complete, current customization guide for Accessories. April 2025 notes document color options that can be switched in the Costumes interface after purchase. Later notes list additional chromas and visual effects.
Combat statistics No stat bonus or pay-to-win effect is described. The developer’s stated policy classifies paid cosmetics as visual-only, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.

Do Accessories or skins change gameplay, or just how a hero looks?

On the official evidence available, they change presentation rather than gameplay power. In its December 5, 2024 monetization statement, the Marvel Rivals team wrote: “We will be charging for cosmetics that will provide only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.” Read the full statement in Dev Talk Vol.07 | Monetization.

That statement is the clearest published policy on combat impact. It supports the conclusion that buying an Accessory or Costume should not increase damage, health, armor, cooldowns, movement speed, or another hero statistic. It does not, however, establish every technical detail about every individual model. The statement does not promise identical visibility, hitboxes, animation timing, or competitive readability for every Costume, so those details should not be inferred from the cosmetic-only policy.

The practical answer is therefore straightforward: choose these items for appearance, collection, or personalization—not for stronger abilities.

What Accessories are and how Accessory Points work

Accessories are hero-specific

The Season 3 feature is not a universal accessory slot that automatically fits the entire roster. The official notes describe Accessories as items redeemed for a specific hero. Before spending points, check the item’s hero designation in the Shop. An Accessory intended for one hero should not be assumed to transfer to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented earn-and-redeem loop

The Season 3 patch notes state: “Accessories: Earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific accessories.” The notes were published on July 3, 2025; see the Season 3 patch notes.

  1. Play matches. The notes identify matches as the source of Accessory Points. They do not establish a single match type, a universal points-per-match amount, or a permanent earning rate.
  2. Open the Shop. Look for the Accessory section or the current listing that identifies an item as an Accessory.
  3. Check the hero lock. Confirm which hero the item belongs to before redeeming points.
  4. Redeem when the item is available. Spend the required Accessory Points through the current Shop control. The notes establish the redemption path but do not promise that every historical item remains listed.

Because the official introduction does not publish a complete current catalog, point cost, rotation schedule, or universal expiration rule, treat the live Shop—not an old guide—as the authority for what you can obtain now.

What is not established about Accessories

  • The cited official notes do not provide a complete list of all Accessories.
  • They do not state that every hero has the same number of Accessories.
  • They do not give a permanent price, points requirement, or availability window for every item.
  • They do not describe a universal accessory customization editor comparable to the documented Costume color controls.

Those omissions are important when reading older posts or videos. A creator may accurately show an item that was available in a particular season without proving that the same item, price, or redemption option is still active.

What Costumes (skins) change

The main hero appearance

A Costume changes how the selected hero is presented. This is the category most players mean when they say they bought a skin. Costumes can be distributed through different cosmetic channels, including Shop bundles, Battle Pass content, events, and achievements. The monetization statement describes those channels in general; it does not make every Costume permanently obtainable or specify one price for the whole category.

Color options and chromas

Customization has expanded beyond a single fixed appearance. The April 2025 update notes describe Costume color options that can be switched in the Costumes interface after the Costume has been purchased. The relevant update is documented in the April 2025 patch notes.

Later updates also list additional Costume chromas and visual effects. A chroma is a visual variant, not a different combat build. The notes do not establish that every Costume includes a chroma, that every color option is free, or that a color variant can be used across different heroes. Check the controls and requirements shown for the particular Costume in your client.

Visual effects are still cosmetic

Recent patch notes continue to mention Costumes, chromas, and Ultimate Ability VFX. These references show that the visual system remains active, but they do not turn an effect into a stat upgrade. An Ultimate Ability visual effect can change what the ability looks or sounds like while it is used; the published monetization policy still classifies paid cosmetics as visual-only.

How to manage a Costume or Accessory in game

Selecting a Costume

  1. Open the hero customization area and enter the Costumes interface. The April 2025 notes use that label for Costume color controls.
  2. Select the hero whose appearance you want to change.
  3. Choose a Costume you already own, or review the current acquisition option shown by the game.
  4. If that Costume supports color choices or a chroma, use the options displayed for that item and save or confirm the selection using the current in-game control.

Menu names and placement can move between updates. If a guide shows a button that is not present, use the labels in your current client rather than assuming the older interface is still authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding an Accessory

  1. Open the Shop and locate the current Accessory listing.
  2. Read the item details to identify the associated hero and the redemption requirement.
  3. If you have enough Accessory Points and the item is available, redeem it through the Shop.
  4. After redemption, follow the equip prompt shown by your current client. The published Season 3 description confirms earning and Shop redemption, but it does not document one permanent equip-menu path for every later patch.

Availability changes with seasons and patches

Patch notes are dated snapshots, not a promise that an item will remain obtainable. The Season 3 notes introduced the Accessory system in July 2025. A later Season 6 update published January 14, 2026 still listed new Accessories, showing that the category continued to receive content. The September 23, 2026 patch notes also listed recent Store customization offerings and time-limited availability.

These updates establish continued support for both systems, not a complete October 2026 inventory. An item named in a July 2025 or January 2026 note may be rotated out, event-locked, replaced by another offer, or available through a different route today. For a current purchase or redemption decision:

  • Check the live Shop and the item’s own availability text.
  • Read the current event or Battle Pass requirements instead of relying on an old price list.
  • Confirm the hero name before spending points or currency.
  • Keep in mind that a time-limited offer can disappear even when the broader Costume or Accessory system remains active.

Costs, requirements, and what to verify before redeeming

The official material establishes how the two categories function, but it does not provide one universal price sheet. Accessory Points are earned through matches and spent in the Shop, yet the introduction does not publish a permanent number of points per match, a single cost for every Accessory, or a guaranteed rotation schedule. Costume acquisition can involve Shop bundles, Battle Passes, events, or achievements, so the requirement depends on the particular offer.

Before committing currency or points, inspect the item page for four details: the category label, the associated hero, the current requirement, and the availability wording. This avoids confusing a Costume bundle with an Accessory listing or assuming that an older event reward is still claimable. If the listing is time-limited, treat its displayed deadline or event condition as more relevant than a video or screenshot from an earlier season.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also no official statement in the cited notes that Accessories and Costumes share a single inventory, use identical equip controls, or can always be displayed together. Do not assume those interactions until the current client shows them. The safe comparison is about their documented purpose: Costumes are the hero’s main appearance, while Accessories are separate, hero-specific cosmetic items.

Which should you choose?

Choose a Costume when the full look matters

A Costume is the natural choice when you want to change the hero’s overall theme or use documented color and chroma options. It is also the category to investigate when you are interested in a visual effect associated with a hero’s ability. Ownership and variant rules are item-specific, so inspect the in-game details before assuming a particular color or effect is included.

Choose an Accessory when you want a smaller, hero-focused cosmetic

An Accessory makes sense when you want a hero-specific visual addition and are willing to earn Accessory Points through matches. The system gives you a defined earn-and-redeem route, but it does not make Accessories universal across the roster. Confirm that the item is for a hero you actually play.

Use neither category as a power purchase

The developer’s published policy rules out stat bonuses and pay-to-win elements for paid cosmetics. If your goal is better performance, practice, settings adjustments, team coordination, and learning a hero’s abilities matter; a Costume or Accessory is a presentation choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling every cosmetic an Accessory

Accessory is a specific category. A full hero outfit belongs under Costumes, even when a player informally calls it a skin. Use the category shown by the game when checking requirements or asking for help.

Assuming an Accessory is roster-wide

The documented redemption path is hero-specific. Read the item’s hero label before redeeming points; do not assume an item can be equipped by another character with a similar theme.

Bottom line for players

In Marvel Rivals, Costumes (skins) change a hero’s appearance, while Accessories are a separate, hero-specific cosmetic category. Season 3 introduced Accessory Points earned in matches and spent in the Shop. Costumes have documented color options, chromas, and other visual customization in later updates. The developer’s monetization policy says these cosmetics provide no stat bonuses or pay-to-win advantage. Check the current Shop and patch notes for availability, because offers and requirements can change over time.

How do you get Accessory Points?

The Season 3 patch notes state that Accessory Points are earned in matches and redeemed in the Shop for hero-specific Accessories. The notes do not establish one permanent points-per-match rate or a universal cost for every item.

Can I use an Accessory on any hero?

The documented system is hero-specific. Check the item’s hero designation before redeeming points; do not assume an Accessory transfers to another character.

Do all Costumes include colors, chromas, or visual effects?

No such universal rule is stated. April 2025 notes document Costume color controls, and later notes list additional chromas and visual effects, but options and requirements are item-specific. Inspect the particular Costume in your client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Accessories and Costumes always available?

No. Store listings, events, Battle Pass content, and other offers can change. Season 6 notes in January 2026 still listed new Accessories, while September 2026 notes documented time-limited Store offerings. Check the live Shop and current event text before spending points or currency.

Can an old guide confirm today’s price or availability?

Not reliably. Patch notes and screenshots describe a dated offering. They do not guarantee that an item, price, points requirement, or redemption route remains active after later updates.

Do the official notes confirm identical hitboxes or visibility for every Costume?

No. The cosmetic-only policy addresses stats and pay-to-win elements, but it does not promise identical visibility, hitboxes, animation timing, or competitive readability for every model. Do not infer those technical details without a specific official statement.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Costumes are Marvel Rivals’ name for skins and change a hero’s overall look. Accessories are separate, hero-specific cosmetics obtained through the Accessory Point and Shop system. Neither is intended to improve combat statistics. Because requirements and availability change, verify the current in-game listing before redeeming anything.
