The six classes in Marvel Contest of Champions form a loop, not a simple “good versus bad” ladder: Skill > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Tech > Mutant > Skill. A class advantage exists only between neighboring classes. It changes attack rating, giving the advantaged attacker a useful edge and reducing the disadvantaged side’s attack rating, but it does not guarantee a win.
Use the wheel as your first filter when building a team. Then read the defender’s abilities and the quest nodes, identify the actual threat—such as buffs, power gain, evade, bleed, armor or a node effect—and select a champion whose kit answers that threat. A strong direct counter can matter more than the class badge.
The six-class wheel and what “advantage” means
Class relationships in MCOC are circular:
Skill > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Tech > Mutant > Skill

Only adjacent classes interact
Advantage applies to the class immediately next to the defender in this loop. It does not chain. For example, Skill has an advantage over Science, and Science has an advantage over Mystic; that does not give Skill a special advantage over Mystic. Mystic is two positions away from Skill, so there is no class bonus between them.
The reverse relationship is class disadvantage. If Skill is attacking a Mutant, Skill is immediately below Mutant in the loop and is disadvantaged. If you are fighting a Science defender, a Skill attacker is advantaged while a Mutant attacker is disadvantaged. Matchups that are not neighbors have neither advantage nor disadvantage.
What the class modifier changes
Class advantage is an attack-rating modifier. The advantaged attacker receives an attack-rating benefit against that adjacent class, while the disadvantaged opponent’s attack rating is reduced. The modifier improves the numbers behind your attacks; it does not decide the fight, disable the defender, or replace a needed counter ability.

- It does not automatically stop evade, shrug a debuff, remove a buff or prevent a defender’s special attack.
- A champion with the “wrong” class can still be the better choice if its abilities directly answer the defender or the node.
- Because the relationship is adjacency-only, checking the exact pair is more reliable than trying to infer a chain of advantages.
What each class commonly does
Players often ask, “What are the unique abilities of each class?” No class has one ability shared by every champion. Class identity is a set of recurring design patterns, and individual kits can break those patterns. The following tendencies are useful for learning the roster, not guarantees of how every champion behaves.

These descriptions reflect broad community-observed patterns. The roster changes over time, and champion abilities have exceptions; treat the class label as a starting hypothesis, then verify the individual champion’s abilities in-game.

Why class advantage is not a complete counter
A class relationship answers one narrow question: which side receives the attack-rating modifier? It does not answer whether your attacks will connect, whether the defender will gain power, or whether a node will change the rules.
Direct ability counters
A direct counter has an ability that interferes with a specific defender mechanic. Examples include nullifying a buff, preventing a power gain, reducing ability accuracy, resisting bleed, countering evade or applying armor break. These effects are tied to a champion’s kit, not granted to the entire class.
Holistic champion counters
A holistic counter combines several interactions so that the defender’s whole toolkit becomes manageable. One champion may have the right control effect, immunity and damage type at the same time, even without the strongest class pairing. This is why a nominally neutral or disadvantaged champion can outperform an advantaged one in a particular matchup.
Quest and fight nodes
Nodes can override your assumptions about a class. A node may punish a debuff, grant periodic power, require a certain damage type, alter healing, trigger evade or modify special attacks. Read the node text before selecting a counter. The best choice is the champion that satisfies the node condition while addressing the defender’s abilities; class advantage is an additional edge when available.
A practical method for choosing a counter
Use this sequence whenever a defender is causing trouble:

- Identify the defender’s class. Locate it on the six-class wheel rather than relying on memory of a previous matchup.
- List the adjacent options. Choose a class with advantage if one of your suitable champions has it. Do not assume a two-step relationship counts.
- Read the defender’s ability list. Note buffs, passive effects, evade, power gain, immunities, regeneration, armor, bleed interactions and triggers tied to specials.
- Read every relevant quest node. Check both global nodes and the local node on the defender’s tile. Record restrictions that change damage, healing, debuffs or power.
- Name the actual threat. Decide whether the fight is being lost to a buff, power meter, evade, bleed, armor, a special attack or a node condition. A precise threat is easier to counter than a class label.
- Filter your roster by direct answers. Look for champions who can remove or prevent that threat. Consider immunities and resistances as well as offensive effects.
- Use class advantage as a tiebreaker. If two candidates solve the mechanics equally well, favor the advantaged class for the attack-rating benefit.
- Confirm the matchup in a low-risk fight. Watch how the defender gains buffs or power and whether your counter effect triggers as expected. Adjust your rotation rather than assuming the class bonus will carry the fight.
Threat-based counter patterns
The table below connects common problems to the kind of ability worth seeking. It is a decision aid, not a promise that every champion in a class has the listed tool.

Illustrative matchup: Wiccan against Terrax
Wiccan versus Terrax shows why a complete matchup analysis is stronger than reading the class wheel alone. Wiccan is Mystic, so he has class advantage against Terrax’s Cosmic class. The useful interaction goes further: the cited matchup combines Mystic advantage with armor-break immunity, recovery from energy damage and neutralize against buffs.
Those pieces address several parts of Terrax’s threat profile at once. Class advantage supplies the attack-rating edge; the immunities and control effects address specific mechanics. This is an illustrative matchup, not a universal rule that every Mystic defeats every Cosmic champion or that Wiccan is always the best option. Node combinations, champion rank, mastery setup and player execution can change the result.

Assuming the wheel predicts the winner
Advantage modifies attack rating, not the entire fight. A poorly matched kit can still fail against a defender whose ability cannot be controlled.
Correction: Treat the wheel as your first filter, then verify direct counters and node requirements.

Applying advantage across multiple steps
Skill does not gain an extra bonus against Mystic because Skill beats Science and Science beats Mystic. Only neighboring classes interact.
Correction: Write the six classes in order and check whether the attacker and defender are next to each other.
Choosing a class instead of an ability
“Mystic counters Cosmic” is a useful shorthand for a recurring pattern, not a guarantee that every Mystic can nullify every Cosmic buff.
Correction: Open the champion’s ability details and confirm the trigger, duration, chance, immunities and restrictions.

A node can make a nominally ideal class unusable or force a damage and control strategy that your preferred counter cannot supply.

Correction: Read the path and defender nodes before entering the fight, and keep a backup champion for the most restrictive condition.
Relying on old tier lists
Community class breakdowns and champion examples age as the roster and game modes evolve. A role that was once common may now have several exceptions.
Correction: Use older role descriptions to understand patterns, but rely on the current in-game ability text for a live matchup.
Building a balanced team around the wheel
A team does not need one champion from every class to be effective. Start with the content you are running and the threats it contains.
- Bring at least one reliable answer to the most common defensive mechanic on the path.
- Add an advantaged-class attacker when that attacker also meets the node and ability requirements.
- Keep a second option for defenders that punish your primary damage type or debuff plan.
- Value immunities and control effects over a small attack-rating edge when the defender’s mechanic can otherwise end the fight.
- Recheck the team when switching game modes; the same class matchup can behave differently under different nodes.
For example, a team built for a Cosmic-heavy path might include a Mystic buff-control option, but it should also include a champion that handles the path’s power or damage node. A Cosmic attacker with armor break may be the better choice into a Tech defender even when another champion has a more convenient rotation, provided the node does not penalize that strategy.
What to remember in the fight
The class wheel is a compact way to estimate attack-rating pressure: Skill over Science, Science over Mystic, Mystic over Cosmic, Cosmic over Tech, Tech over Mutant and Mutant over Skill. The benefit stops at adjacent classes and never substitutes for a counter ability.
When a fight goes badly, ask four questions in order: Is my class adjacent and advantaged? What exact mechanic is defeating me? Does my champion directly counter it? Do the quest nodes change the answer? This checklist turns class knowledge into a practical selection method instead of a misleading promise of an automatic win.
