Two MarkLogic vulnerabilities allow an authenticated user with a low-privileged REST role to escalate privileges through REST-facing features, according to CVE records published August 5, 2026. The records describe administrator escalation through SQL, SPARQL, and Optic query interfaces, and privileged operations against the Security database through document patching. They do not establish that either flaw creates a persistent administrator account.

What the MarkLogic advisories establish

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s advisory AV26-781, dated August 5, 2026, lists Progress MarkLogic Server versions before 11.3.6 and before 12.0.3 as affected by a Progress security bulletin. It directs administrators to review the vendor bulletin and apply necessary updates. The bulletin lists ten CVEs: CVE-2026-7326, CVE-2026-7327, CVE-2026-7329, CVE-2026-7557, CVE-2026-8709, CVE-2026-9190, CVE-2026-9192, CVE-2026-9193, CVE-2026-9195, and CVE-2026-9203. Read the Canadian advisory.

Two of those CVE records describe privilege-escalation paths through REST-facing functionality. Their mechanics and stated impacts differ:

CVE Affected feature Stated attacker access Stated impact
CVE-2026-7329 SQL, SPARQL, and Optic REST query interfaces Authenticated user with a low-privileged REST role Escalation to administrator privileges, enabling privileged operations and unauthorized data access
CVE-2026-8709 REST API document patch operation Authenticated low-privileged REST user Privilege escalation and privileged operations against the Security database

These are distinct attack paths, not interchangeable descriptions of one flaw. The CVE-2026-7329 advisory describes the query-interface issue. The CVE-2026-8709 record describes the document-patch issue.

Does this mean delegated managers can keep persistent admin control?

The cited records support privilege escalation, but do not confirm the more specific claim that delegated managers can create or retain a persistent administrator account. They do not establish that the flaws have been exploited in the wild, nor that any particular MarkLogic deployment has been compromised. “Persistent admin control” should not be treated as a verified impact on the evidence available here.

The CVE-2026-7329 description explicitly says an attacker can escalate to administrator privileges. CVE-2026-8709 describes privileged operations against the Security database. Neither description, as cited, proves persistent account creation. Administrators should use the vendor’s full bulletin and applicable CVE records to determine the precise impact and remediation for their deployment.

Which versions are affected?

AV26-781 lists MarkLogic Server versions before 11.3.6 and before 12.0.3. Check the exact installed build and confirm the correct upgrade path in Progress documentation; the advisory thresholds do not by themselves specify a deployment’s full upgrade procedure.

The CVE-2026-8709 record assigns a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.9. This is a severity rating, not a measure of how often the flaw is exploited, how many systems are exposed, or the probability that a particular server has been compromised.

What MarkLogic administrators should do

  1. Identify installed builds. Check each MarkLogic Server deployment against the affected thresholds: before 11.3.6 and before 12.0.3. Confirm the applicable branch and upgrade route using Progress documentation.
  2. Apply the appropriate vendor update. The Canadian advisory recommends applying necessary updates. Use Progress’s bulletin to select the remediation for the installed version.
  3. Restrict REST API write access. The CVE-2026-8709 record recommends limiting REST API write privileges to accounts that need them. Review service accounts and remove unnecessary write permissions.
  4. Assess exposure and investigate as appropriate. Review access and security records under your organization’s incident-response procedures. The cited advisories do not report confirmed exploitation, so do not infer compromise from the vulnerability notice alone.
