Marketing automation helps you coordinate messages across channels by using audience data, schedules, and customer behavior to decide who receives what and when. To use it well, define the audience and goal first, then build a workflow that connects relevant messages, timing, and follow-up actions.

What marketing automation does across channels

Marketing automation is software for managing campaign tasks and customer communications through rules and workflows. A workflow can send a message on a schedule or respond to a behavior, such as a signup or engagement with content. Salesforce describes examples spanning email, web, social, and text, with audience segmentation, personalization, lead nurturing, scoring, and campaign measurement (Salesforce’s marketing automation overview).

Automation coordinates the work; it does not decide your strategy for you. Your team still chooses the audience, message, channel, trigger, and next step. For example, a signup might start a welcome message, a later follow-up, and a sales handoff if engagement meets a defined condition.

Which channels can a workflow coordinate?

Available channels depend on the product, edition, and interface. The documentation below provides examples of channel support, not a guarantee that every option is included in every product or plan.

Documented context Channel examples Qualification
Salesforce marketing automation overview Email, web, social, and text Examples in a general overview; confirm features for the specific product and edition.
Adobe Campaign v8 Client Console Email, web, mobile, social, direct mail, call center, and in-store Describes coordination of online and offline channels in the Client Console documentation, last updated October 5, 2026 (Adobe Campaign v8 Client Console documentation).
Adobe Campaign v8 Web UI Email, SMS, WhatsApp, push, and direct mail Channel activities documented for the Web UI; the page was last updated June 16, 2026. This is a different interface from the Client Console (Adobe Campaign v8 Web UI documentation).
Braze product description In-product and out-of-product messaging Vendor-described cross-channel orchestration using behavior and interactions; this is a capability description, not independent performance validation (Braze product overview).

Use this list to frame questions, not to assume a feature is available in a particular subscription. Confirm channel availability, licensing, and limits for the exact edition and interface you plan to use.

How to plan a multi-channel automation workflow

  1. Set the campaign goal. Decide what the workflow should achieve, such as welcoming new subscribers, educating interested prospects, or prompting a next action. Choose a result you can measure.
  2. Define the audience. Specify who qualifies, which data source identifies them, and any exclusions. In Adobe Campaign’s documented Web UI workflow, audience definition comes before adding a channel activity (Adobe Campaign v8 Web UI documentation).
  3. Choose channels that serve the goal. Select only channels your audience can receive and your team can support. A coordinated journey is not automatically better because it uses more platforms.
  4. Create and review the messages. Adapt content to each channel while keeping the offer, timing, and next step consistent. Check that personalization fields and links work for the intended audience.
  5. Set the trigger, schedule, and branches. Decide whether entry is based on a date or behavior, when each message should run, and what happens when a person engages, does not engage, or no longer qualifies. If deliveries repeat, verify the schedule and stopping conditions.
  6. Connect the steps and handoffs. Map how a person moves from one activity to another, including any transfer to sales or another system. Check that the required integrations and data are available before relying on a handoff.
  7. Measure and refine. Review delivery and engagement alongside the campaign goal. Use the results to adjust audience rules, content, timing, or channel choice rather than assuming that more messages will improve outcomes.

What to compare when choosing automation software

Compare platforms against the workflow you need to run, not a headline count of supported channels. Salesforce discusses segmentation, personalization, and measurement; Adobe documents sequencing channel activities; Braze describes behavior-informed cross-channel orchestration. These are examples from vendor materials, not an independent ranking.

  • Channel availability: Verify the channels in the exact edition and interface, along with any limits or licensing requirements.
  • Audience data: Check which customer data sources can be used for selection and segmentation, and how often that data updates.
  • Workflow controls: Confirm support for schedules, behavior triggers, waits, branching, and stopping rules that fit your journey.
  • Personalization: Determine whether messages can use the data fields you need, and how missing or outdated values are handled.
  • Integrations and handoffs: Check connections to the systems that supply audience data or receive qualified leads and follow-up tasks.
  • Reporting: Make sure you can evaluate campaign activity against the outcome you set, not just count sends.
  • Operational complexity: Consider how many steps, channels, and exceptions your team can maintain and review.

Keep the workflow manageable

For a focused campaign, begin with the audience, one clear goal, and the channels and triggers you genuinely need. For a longer customer journey, pay particular attention to how the platform combines audience data, cross-channel steps, and measurement. Build the rules so that each person receives relevant messages and exits or changes paths when the original condition no longer applies.
