Choose a market order when completing the trade matters more than controlling the exact price. Choose a limit order when a price boundary matters more than getting filled. In a volatile stock, a market order can fill at a price different from the quote you see, while a limit order can remain unfilled or receive only a partial fill. The right choice depends on your priority, order size, available liquidity, timing and your broker’s handling rules—not on a promise that either order is universally safer.
What the two orders actually promise
Market order: execution priority, no fixed fill price
A market order tells your broker to buy or sell at the best available prices in the market. It generally seeks prompt execution when willing counterparties are available, but it does not guarantee the execution price. The last-traded price and the displayed bid or ask are not promises that your order will fill there.
For a buy, the order normally takes available offers beginning at the lowest available ask. For a sell, it normally takes available bids beginning at the highest available bid. If the price moves or the displayed liquidity disappears before the order reaches the market, the eventual fill can be different. Investor.gov explains the general mechanics in its overview of order types.

Limit order: a price boundary, not a fill guarantee
A limit order specifies the worst price you will accept. A buy limit can execute only at the limit price or lower. A sell limit can execute only at the limit price or higher. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance defines it in its investor bulletin as “an order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price or better,” and explicitly states: “A limit order is not guaranteed to execute.” See Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.

That boundary protects price if the order executes, but it does not ensure that shares will be available at that price, that the order will be filled before the market moves away, or that the entire quantity will trade.
Market versus limit: the decision in one view
| Decision axis | Market order | Limit order |
|---|---|---|
| Main priority | Generally prioritizes getting the order executed at available prices. | Sets a maximum buy price or minimum sell price. |
| Price certainty | No guaranteed execution price; the fill may differ from the last trade or displayed quote. | Provides a price boundary if the order executes. |
| Execution certainty | Generally likely to execute when willing counterparties are available, but market conditions and timing still matter. | Not guaranteed; the market may never reach the limit, or the order may not fill before prices move away. |
| Volatility exposure | Rapid moves and thin or changing liquidity can cause worse-than-expected or multiple fill prices. | Controls the price boundary but can produce a missed or partial trade. |
| Best question to ask | Is completing the trade more important than controlling the exact price? | What is the highest buy price or lowest sell price I can accept, even if no trade occurs? |
This is a general comparison, not a promise about a particular broker or stock. Investor.gov notes that a market order generally executes at or near the current bid for a sell or ask for a buy, while the last-traded price can differ. Its explanation of execution is at Executing an Order.
Why volatility changes the trade-off
Quotes can change before routing is complete
An order does not move directly from the quote on your screen to an exchange. Your broker receives it, applies its procedures and routes it for execution. Prices and available shares can change during that process. A displayed quote applies only to a particular number of shares at a particular moment; it is not a guarantee for every order that follows.

The reverse can happen to a sell order. The SEC’s online-investing guidance describes this timing risk and explains that execution quality involves more than simply choosing the fastest route. Read Tips for Online Investing: What You Need to Know About Trading In Fast-Moving Markets.
Thin liquidity can create multiple fills
Liquidity is the amount of stock available to trade at each price. If your order is larger than the shares available at the best displayed price, a market order can consume that level and continue to the next prices. The result may be several partial fills at different prices. The SEC bulletin gives this as a reason a large order may not receive one uniform price.

A limit order can also fill in pieces. It will not trade beyond its boundary, but only the shares offered at an acceptable price can execute. The remaining quantity may wait, expire or stay open according to the order’s duration and your broker’s rules.
Price movement can pass a limit without filling it
A stock can trade through a price quickly while orders already ahead in the queue are being filled. A buy limit at a price the stock briefly touches might receive no shares; a sell limit can have the same problem on a brief upward move. Reaching or crossing the limit on a chart is therefore not proof that your order executed.

How a market order behaves on a volatile stock
Illustrative buy example
Illustrative only, not market data: suppose a stock is displaying a $50.00 ask for a limited number of shares. You submit a market buy for more shares than are offered at $50.00. If the $50.00 shares are taken before your order reaches the market, the next available offers could be higher. Your order may therefore fill across multiple prices, with an average above $50.00.
The example demonstrates why the last trade or visible ask is not a guaranteed market-order price. It does not establish a typical amount of slippage or an expected percentage move.
Illustrative sell example
Assume the displayed bid is $50.00, but only a small number of shares are bid there. A market sell larger than that amount can fill some shares at $50.00 and the rest at lower bids. A sudden news event or a gap in available bids can widen the difference.

When execution priority can be rational
A market order may fit when a missed trade would be more damaging to your plan than an uncertain fill price—for example, when you need to reduce an existing position promptly and have accepted that the result will vary with available liquidity. That is a decision about your risk tolerance and objective, not a guarantee that the order will execute at a quoted price.
How a limit order behaves on a volatile stock
Buy limits
Enter the highest price per share you are willing to pay. The order can execute at that price or lower, but never above it under the limit condition. If the market remains above your limit, it can stay unfilled. If the stock falls rapidly, available shares may be taken by orders ahead of yours, leaving a partial fill.
Sell limits
Enter the lowest price per share you are willing to accept. The order can execute at that price or higher, but it may not fill if the stock never offers shares at or above your limit, or if the move is too brief for your order to execute.
What a limit cannot do
- It cannot guarantee that a trade occurs.
- It cannot guarantee a complete fill.
- It cannot guarantee that the market will return to your price after moving away.
- It cannot remove the risk of a sharp move after a partial fill.
FINRA’s explanation, Understanding Order Types Can Save Time and Money, likewise treats execution as conditional rather than automatic.
What happens between “Submit” and the fill
- You enter the order. Check the symbol, buy or sell direction, share quantity, order type, limit price if applicable, and duration shown by your broker.
- Your broker receives and routes it. The order may be sent to a trading venue or handled through the broker’s routing process. The displayed quote can change during this interval.
- The order interacts with available liquidity. A market order takes available prices; a limit order can interact only at prices satisfying its boundary.
- The order may fill in parts. Each execution can have its own price. The order status should show filled, partially filled, open, cancelled or expired according to the platform.
- You verify the result. Review executions and remaining quantity before submitting another order. Investor.gov warns that assuming an order was cancelled or executed can lead to an unintended second trade; its online-investing guidance is at Online Investing.
Investor.gov describes a broker’s obligation to seek the best execution reasonably available. That does not mean a market order always receives the best displayed price, nor that routing produces a particular result. Price improvement is possible, not guaranteed, and a potentially better price can involve additional execution time.

A practical decision framework
Step 1: Define the non-negotiable risk
- Choose the market-order side of the trade-off if completing the trade is the non-negotiable objective and you accept that the fill price can move.
- Choose the limit-order side if paying above a maximum or selling below a minimum is unacceptable, even if that means no trade.
Step 2: Consider size and liquidity
Compare your share quantity with the displayed depth your broker shows, where available. A large order relative to available shares has greater potential for multiple market-order prices and partial limit fills. A quote for a small number of shares should not be treated as a price guarantee for the entire order.
Step 3: Consider the speed of the move
During a fast announcement-driven move, a market order can reach a very different price from the screen quote. A limit order can prevent an unacceptable price but may leave you without a position or exit. Decide which outcome you can live with before submitting, rather than changing the boundary impulsively after the price moves.
Step 4: Read the order ticket and broker rules
Broker platforms differ in available order types, time-in-force choices, pre-market or after-hours handling, status labels, cancellation procedures and treatment of partial fills. Confirm what “day,” “good-until-cancelled” or another duration means on your platform, and verify whether the order is actually cancelled before entering a replacement. Do not assume another broker uses the same defaults.
Step 5: Confirm the final status
After submitting, inspect the order’s status and execution details. If it is partially filled, decide whether the remaining quantity should stay open, be cancelled or be replaced—using the controls and rules your broker provides. Never submit a duplicate solely because the screen has not refreshed.

Buy and sell checklists
Before a market buy
- Confirm that execution matters more than a fixed maximum price.
- Check the current ask and the amount of visible liquidity, while recognizing both can change.
- Review share quantity; a larger order can consume several price levels.
- Know how your broker displays partial fills and average execution price.
Before a market sell
- Confirm that reducing or closing the position now matters more than a minimum sale price.
- Check the current bid and visible size, without treating it as guaranteed.
- Consider whether a thin bid could produce several lower fills.
- Plan how you will verify the completed quantity.
Before a buy limit
- Set the highest acceptable price, not a price chosen only because it is near the last trade.
- Accept that the order may not fill or may fill only partly.
- Check the duration and cancellation process.
- After a brief price touch, verify executions instead of assuming a fill.
Before a sell limit
- Set the lowest acceptable sale price.
- Accept that the stock can move below the limit without selling your shares.
- Check duration, open quantity and partial-fill handling.
- Verify whether the remaining order is open, expired or cancelled before taking further action.
Common mistakes in fast markets—and the correction
“The last price is what my market order will get.”
Correction: The last trade is historical. A market order interacts with current available bids or asks, which can change before execution.

“A limit order guarantees a good price.”
Correction: It guarantees only the specified price boundary if execution occurs. It can miss the trade, fill partly or expire.
“The stock touched my limit, so I must be filled.”
Correction: Orders ahead of yours, limited liquidity and the speed of the move can prevent execution. Check the broker’s execution report.
“I will cancel and immediately submit another order.”
Correction: First confirm the original order’s status. A cancellation may not have completed, and an order you thought was inactive may still execute. A replacement can create an unintended double position.

Questions to answer on the order ticket
- Am I buying or selling, and is the symbol correct?
- What is the exact share quantity?
- For a market order, can I accept a fill different from the displayed quote?
- For a limit order, what is my maximum buy or minimum sell price?
- Would no fill be preferable to crossing that boundary?
- What time-in-force options does this broker actually offer?
- How are partial fills shown?
- How will I confirm execution or cancellation?
- If the order remains open, what event or time will make me cancel or revise it?
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The official investor materials explain mechanics and risks; they do not establish a universal slippage amount, a typical execution percentage or a measured market-versus-limit success rate for volatile stocks. The SEC bulletin’s examples are illustrations, not empirical statistics. Any claim that one order type produces a predictable percentage advantage would go beyond the documented evidence.
The sources also describe general U.S. market-order and limit-order concepts. Availability, time-in-force labels, venue access, extended-hours behavior, cancellation handling and other procedures can vary by broker and account. Read the order ticket and the firm’s terms for the specific platform you use.
Bottom line for a volatile stock
Use a market order only when getting the trade executed is more important than knowing the exact price, and when you can tolerate changing quotes, multiple fills and a result different from the last trade. Use a limit order when a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price is essential, and accept that the order may be delayed, partial or unfilled. In either case, size, liquidity, timing and broker procedures determine what actually happens. Review the status and executions before taking any follow-up action.
