Short answer: A market correction is a decline of at least 10% from a recent high, usually measured in an index, sector, or individual asset. Investor education commonly uses “correction” for a decline below 20% and “bear market” for a decline of 20% or more. A correction has no dependable standard duration: it can end quickly, continue for a prolonged period, recover, or deepen.

The label describes price movement; it does not predict the cause, the next market move, or the right action for a particular investor. The useful response is to check whether your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and long-term plan still fit your circumstances, rather than treating a percentage threshold as a timing signal.

What is a market correction?

FINRA’s stressed-market glossary defines a correction this way: A correction is when stocks, bonds, commodities or indices reverse course by at least 10 percent, before resuming their previous upward or downward trend. That definition is broader than the popular shorthand about the U.S. stock market. A correction can occur in a stock index, a sector, an individual security, a bond market, a commodity, or another tracked asset.

The 10% figure is a threshold, not a diagnosis. It tells you that the asset or index has moved materially below a recent high under the source’s measurement method. It does not tell you why prices fell or whether the decline is over.

How the 10% threshold is normally used

Investor education from Merrill Edge commonly describes a correction as a decline of at least 10% but less than 20% from a recent high for a market index, sector, or individual investment. The 20% line is a widely used convention for distinguishing a bear market. These labels are descriptive conventions, not formal forecasts and not guarantees about recovery.

Label Common decline from a recent high What the label can tell you What it cannot tell you
Normal pullback Less than 10% Prices have declined, but the commonly cited correction threshold has not been reached. Whether the decline will stop, reverse, or become larger.
Market correction At least 10% and generally below 20% The decline has crossed a commonly used threshold. The cause, duration, or appropriate portfolio decision.
Bear market 20% or more The decline has crossed another commonly used threshold. When a bottom or recovery will occur.

Because the same term can be applied to different assets, always identify the index or investment being measured. A correction in one sector is not evidence that every asset is in correction territory.

How is a correction measured?

The basic calculation compares a current price with a recent high. The source must define which high, price series, and date range it uses. A statement that an index is “down 10%” is incomplete unless you know the reference high and whether the calculation uses closing prices, intraday prices, or another convention.

  1. Identify the asset. Name the specific index, fund, security, bond benchmark, commodity, or other instrument.
  2. Identify the reference high. Confirm the date and price that the source treats as the recent high.
  3. Calculate the percentage decline. Subtract the current value from the reference high, divide by the reference high, and express the result as a percentage.
  4. Record the date and method. Keep the measurement date and the source’s definition with the number.

Different providers can report different percentages for the same broad market if they use different indices, highs, price series, or timestamps. A correction label should therefore be read with its measurement details, not as a universal condition applying identically to every portfolio.

How long does a market correction last?

There is no reliable fixed number of days or months that applies to every correction. “Duration” can mean several different things:

  • Peak to trough: the time from the reference high to the lowest point.
  • Time below the threshold: how long the asset remains at least 10% below that high.
  • Time to recover: how long it takes to return to the prior high.
  • Calendar or trading days: the counting method used by the source.

Those measurements are not interchangeable. A decline can reach its low quickly and then spend much longer recovering. Another can remain volatile around the threshold without a single obvious trough. A source that reports an average must state the index, sample period, threshold, endpoint, and counting method before the figure can be applied meaningfully.

Why headline averages can mislead

A U.S. Bank search result has cited an average correction duration of 17 days and said the S&P 500 spent 29% of its history since 1927 at least 10% below a recent high. The accessible result does not establish whether “lasts” means trading days, calendar days, time to a trough, time below the threshold, or time to regain the old high. Those figures should not be used as a general expectation.

Historical statistics can still provide context when their methodology is explicit. Before relying on one, check:

  • which index or asset was studied;
  • the start and end dates of the sample;
  • whether the calculation uses closing or intraday values;
  • whether duration means peak-to-trough, time below 10%, or recovery to the prior high;
  • whether the count uses trading days or calendar days; and
  • whether overlapping episodes are treated as one event or several.

Even a carefully defined historical average describes past observations. It is not a countdown clock for the current episode.

Is a correction the same as a bear market?

No. The terms are related but not identical. A correction is commonly placed in the 10%-to-under-20% range, while a bear market is commonly defined as a decline of 20% or more from a recent high. The 20% boundary is a labeling convention used in investor education, not a rule that predicts what prices will do next.

A correction can deepen into a bear market if the decline reaches the 20% threshold. It can also reverse before that happens. Crossing either threshold does not establish the timing of a bottom, the speed of recovery, or whether a specific holding will behave like the index being discussed.

What causes a market correction?

The word “correction” does not identify a cause. FINRA’s definition describes a reversal in price; it does not attribute that reversal to a particular economic, political, valuation, earnings, interest-rate, liquidity, or other factor. Two declines that meet the same 10% threshold can have very different circumstances and outcomes.

When reading commentary, separate three statements that are often blended together:

  1. Measurement: how far a specified asset has fallen from a specified high.
  2. Explanation: a claim about why prices moved.
  3. Forecast: a claim about what will happen next.

The first can be checked against price data. The second requires evidence about the alleged driver. The third is uncertain even when the explanation is plausible. A correction label alone supports only the measurement, not the explanation or forecast.

What should investors do during a correction?

There is no single action suitable for every investor. A practical review starts with your own plan rather than with the percentage on a screen.

1. Recheck your time horizon

Ask when the money may be needed and whether that date has changed. A portfolio designed for a distant goal can have different constraints from one funding a near-term expense. If a goal, withdrawal schedule, or emergency-reserve requirement has changed, the original allocation may no longer fit even if the market had not declined.

2. Recheck risk tolerance and risk capacity

Risk tolerance is how much volatility you can emotionally accept; risk capacity is how much loss your circumstances can financially withstand. Review both. A person may be comfortable with market fluctuations in principle but unable to absorb a large decline when a payment is due soon. Conversely, a long horizon may provide more time for volatility, but it does not remove the possibility of further losses.

3. Compare the current portfolio with the written plan

Look at the target allocation, diversification policy, liquidity assumptions, and rebalancing rules you adopted before the decline. Distinguish a market move from a change in your circumstances. If the plan still matches your goals and constraints, follow its stated process rather than inventing a new rule in response to a headline.

4. Treat timing claims cautiously

Merrill Edge investor education cautions that trying to time the market during a correction rarely works. That is general education, not a command to buy, sell, or hold any particular investment. A label such as “correction” does not reveal whether prices will fall further or rebound immediately, so using it alone as a trading signal adds an unsupported forecast to the decision.

5. Check liquidity before making a discretionary move

Make sure near-term obligations and planned withdrawals are accounted for before taking an action that could force a sale at an unfavorable time. This is a personal-planning check, not a prediction about market direction.

6. Get individualized help when the decision is complex

U.S. Bank’s financial-perspectives guidance suggests discussing market conditions with a wealth-planning professional to assess goals, time horizon, and risk appetite. A qualified financial professional can help connect general information to your circumstances. That does not make any particular service necessary or suitable for every reader, and general educational material cannot establish individualized suitability.

What market safeguards do—and do not do

SEC Investor.gov describes circuit breakers and trading pauses designed to address extreme volatility and disorderly trading conditions. These mechanisms can temporarily interrupt trading under specified market conditions.

A trading safeguard is not a duration forecast and not a personal portfolio recommendation. It operates at the market or venue level, while your decision concerns your own holdings, objectives, cash needs, and risk constraints. A pause does not indicate how long a correction will last or what action an individual investor should take.

  • Asset: Is it a broad index, sector, individual investment, bond benchmark, commodity, or another measure?
  • Reference high: What date and value are being used?
  • Percentage: Is the decline at least 10%, and is the stated figure calculated consistently?
  • Threshold: Is the source using the common under-20% correction convention or another definition?
  • Duration: Does “lasted” mean time to the trough, time below the threshold, or time to recovery?
  • Time unit: Are the figures in calendar days or trading days?
  • Source date: When was the data measured, and could the market have moved since then?
  • Action claim: Is the writer describing history, or making an unsupported forecast or recommendation?

If a report omits these details, treat its precision cautiously. A rounded percentage or average may look objective while concealing a different definition from the one you need.

Common mistakes during a correction

Assuming every asset has fallen by the index’s percentage

An index-level correction does not mean each constituent, sector, bond, or commodity is down 10%. Check the specific holding and benchmark relevant to your plan.

Confusing a threshold with a bottom

Reaching 10% below a high marks a commonly used label. It does not prove that selling pressure has ended or that recovery has begun.

Comparing incompatible duration statistics

Do not compare one source’s peak-to-trough trading-day figure with another source’s calendar-day recovery period. They answer different questions.

Changing the plan without changing the facts

A temporary price decline and a permanent change in your goals are separate events. First determine whether your circumstances changed; then decide whether the plan needs revision.

Relying on an undated status statement

Market conditions change continuously. A claim that an index is currently in correction territory needs a timestamp and an identified data source. The general guidance here does not establish the live status of any particular index.
