Use Markdown for readable, structured writing when the destination supports the syntax you need. Use HTML when you need semantic elements, attributes, or layouts that the destination’s Markdown dialect cannot express. In many publishing workflows, the choice is not strictly one or the other: you can write in Markdown and have a renderer convert it to HTML. The right choice depends on both the source you want to edit and the output your platform produces.

Markdown and HTML solve different parts of the publishing problem

Markdown is a lightweight format for writing structured content in a source form that stays relatively easy to read. Its appeal is clearest when the content is ordinary prose with familiar structures such as headings, lists, links, and code examples. Google’s developer documentation style guide puts the trade-off plainly: “Markdown is easier to write than HTML, and it’s easier for most humans to read Markdown source than HTML source.” Google’s Markdown versus HTML guidance, last updated October 15, 2024, presents that as a practical authoring advantage, not a claim that Markdown can represent every web-page structure.

HTML is the markup language used to describe the structure and meaning of web content. It provides direct access to semantic elements and attributes, so it is the better fit when the required structure goes beyond the subset offered by a Markdown flavor. MDN explains that HTML text-content elements identify the purpose or structure of content, a role that matters for accessibility and SEO. MDN’s HTML elements reference describes those elements.

It helps to separate two questions: what format should you edit, and what markup should the published result contain? A Markdown file can be rendered as HTML; GitHub documents Markdown-to-HTML rendering through its API. GitHub’s Markdown API documentation is one example of that workflow. If you author in Markdown, the renderer—not the file extension alone—determines how the page is ultimately represented.

That distinction explains why these formats are not always an either-or decision. A writer can maintain a Markdown source file for readability while a publishing tool converts it to HTML. Conversely, a workflow that requires precise semantic markup may call for direct HTML authoring, or for selective HTML within Markdown when the platform permits it. In either case, the format that is pleasant to edit and the format that must exist in the final page are separate considerations.

Choose by the content you need to produce

Situation Prefer Why
README files, notes, simple documentation, or structured prose Markdown The source uses less visual syntax and is easier to read, provided the destination supports the features you use. Google’s style guide and GitHub’s writing guide describe these uses and features.
A tool or publishing workflow accepts Markdown and renders it as HTML Markdown for authoring; check the rendered output You can work in a readable source format while the publishing system generates HTML. The exact result depends on the renderer and its supported dialect. GitHub documents Markdown rendering through its API.
A table needs a header column, block content in cells, classes, or attributes such as colspan, rowspan, or scope HTML MDN identifies these as cases where HTML tables are needed beyond GitHub-Flavored Markdown table capabilities. MDN’s Markdown guidance also recommends HTML if Markdown table syntax becomes too wide to read.
The page needs particular semantic elements or fine-grained markup control HTML, or Markdown with HTML where supported HTML exposes semantic elements and attributes directly. If you mix HTML into Markdown, first confirm that the platform accepts and renders the raw HTML you need. Google’s guide and MDN’s guide discuss the expressive difference and HTML fallback.
A team template or established publishing pipeline already requires one format Follow the existing convention Consistency with the workflow can be more useful than switching formats for a general preference. Google recommends following an existing team or document convention.

For a decision that does not fit neatly into one row, assess four things together: how readable the source will be to the people editing it, which structures and semantic controls the content requires, what the target renderer supports, and whether an existing team template sets the format already.

These criteria work together rather than in isolation. A Markdown feature may be easy to write but unsuitable if the destination does not render it. HTML may support the exact structure needed but introduce more markup for editors to maintain. The useful question is not which format is universally superior; it is which source-and-renderer combination meets the content requirement with the least unnecessary complexity.

When Markdown is the better authoring choice

Markdown is usually the simpler choice for content whose structure is conventional and whose readers or editors benefit from a clean source file. A list or heading in Markdown can be recognized without visually parsing a large number of tags. That can make it a comfortable format for notes, project documentation, and other prose-heavy material.

The advantage is conditional: the destination must understand the Markdown features you use. “Markdown” does not name one universally identical feature set in practice. MDN uses GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) as a baseline and adds extensions for its documentation. A different renderer may support a different set of syntax or handle the same source differently. Therefore, a Markdown file is not a guarantee that every platform will display the same result.

Use Markdown when its syntax is enough for the content and the target platform’s renderer is known. This is especially sensible when a tool already provides a Markdown editing and preview workflow. If the page will move between tools, check the destination’s supported dialect before relying on extensions, tables, or embedded HTML.

For example, a document may use ordinary headings and lists that are understood by both the source tool and the publishing destination, while a special table or extension may be supported only in one place. Treat each non-basic feature as a portability question: verify that the destination recognizes it, and decide whether a simpler structure would travel more reliably. This is particularly useful when documentation is copied from an editor into a repository, a website, or an API-driven publishing workflow.

What Markdown does not settle by itself

Markdown describes an authoring source, not the complete behavior of the publishing system. The source may be transformed, filtered, or interpreted according to the renderer’s rules. A preview in one editor is useful, but it does not establish that another site or mode will render the same way.

GitHub’s REST documentation distinguishes Markdown rendering from its raw mode and says that raw mode does not support GFM. This makes the practical test important: inspect the actual destination and mode, not just a local preview. The GitHub API documentation explains the rendering modes.

When checking portability, make a small test that includes the features your real document depends on. If it uses a table, check the table; if it embeds HTML, check that behavior; if it relies on an extension, verify that extension in the destination. The goal is not to test every possible Markdown feature, but to confirm the ones that affect the content’s meaning or layout. If a required feature fails, either change the source to a supported form or use HTML where the workflow allows it.

When HTML is the better choice

Choose HTML when the content depends on structure or control that your Markdown renderer does not expose. HTML lets you specify semantic elements and attributes directly; MDN’s table guidance makes the difference concrete. If a table requires a header column, a list or other block element inside a cell, a class, or attributes such as colspan, rowspan, or scope, use HTML rather than trying to force the structure into a Markdown table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTML is also a natural choice when the final web markup itself needs careful semantic structure. MDN describes HTML text-content elements as identifying content purpose or structure, with importance for accessibility and SEO. A Markdown authoring workflow can still produce that output, but only if the renderer and publishing system generate suitable semantic HTML. Writing in Markdown alone does not guarantee the semantics of the published page.

There is a trade-off: HTML is more expressive, but its source is generally more visually detailed than Markdown. If editors need to work directly with tags, make sure the team is prepared to maintain the added markup and test the rendered page. For one isolated structural requirement in an otherwise simple Markdown document, raw HTML may be an option—but only if the destination allows it and its handling is understood.

Tables are a useful point at which to make the decision explicitly. A short, simple table may be clear in Markdown, but the source can become difficult to scan as columns grow wider. MDN recommends HTML when Markdown table syntax becomes too wide to read, even apart from cases requiring additional capabilities. If the table also needs a header column, attributes, or block content inside cells, HTML addresses a structural limitation rather than merely a style preference.

When a page needs semantic control, consider whether that control must be authored directly or can be produced by the publishing pipeline. If the Markdown renderer produces the required semantic HTML consistently, Markdown may remain a practical source format. If you cannot rely on that output, direct HTML or a supported HTML exception gives you a clearer way to express the requirement. In both cases, verify the generated page instead of assuming that the source form guarantees the result.

How to choose and verify a format in a real workflow

  1. List the structures the page actually needs. Identify headings, lists, links, code, tables, and any special table behavior or semantic elements. Start with the content, rather than choosing a format based on habit alone.
  2. Check the destination’s Markdown dialect and rendering mode. Confirm whether it supports the syntax you plan to use, including tables, extensions, and raw HTML. Do not assume that a feature available in one Markdown environment will work in another.
  3. Choose the least complex source that meets the requirement. Use Markdown for readable, ordinary structured prose when its supported syntax is sufficient. Use HTML for structures, attributes, or semantic control outside that supported subset.
  4. Preview the rendered result in the destination. Check that headings, lists, tables, and links appear as intended. If the content will be rendered by an API or a separate publishing pipeline, inspect that actual output rather than relying exclusively on the editor preview.
  5. Check the output’s semantic structure when publishing web content. Confirm that the rendered HTML uses meaningful elements for the content. The fact that the source was Markdown does not by itself establish that the final page has the structure it needs.
  6. Keep the team’s template and handoff in view. If the publishing process already expects one format, follow it unless a specific requirement cannot be met. If the workflow changes, reassess renderer behavior as well as the authoring format.

A simple handoff check can make this process repeatable. Record which renderer or publishing mode is expected, note any non-basic syntax the document uses, and preview the result in that destination before it is published or passed on. If several people edit the source, make the convention clear so that one editor does not add syntax another tool cannot interpret.

For public web content, include the generated markup in the verification step when the workflow makes it available. Confirm that the final structure is meaningful for the content, especially when semantic structure matters for accessibility and SEO. This does not require treating every Markdown document as a special case; it means checking the output when the page’s published structure is part of the requirement.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming Markdown means the same thing everywhere

A document can work in one renderer and lose formatting in another because dialects differ. MDN’s own documentation uses GFM as a baseline and adds extensions, while GitHub’s raw rendering mode does not support GFM. Treat the target platform and mode as part of the format decision. If a table or extension matters, test it in the actual destination.

Using a Markdown table for a structure it cannot represent

Markdown tables are convenient for simple tabular content, but they are not a universal substitute for HTML tables. When the content needs a header column, block elements in a cell, classes, or table attributes such as scope, use HTML. MDN also advises switching to HTML when the Markdown table source becomes too wide to read. The point is not to avoid Markdown tables; it is to use them only while they remain both readable and adequate.

Equating readable source with accessible output

Markdown can make prose easier to author, but the published page is judged by its rendered structure. MDN says semantic HTML text-content elements matter for accessibility and SEO. Check the final markup or the publishing system’s output when those properties matter; do not infer them solely from the source format.

Adding HTML to Markdown without checking support

Embedding HTML may solve a missing structural feature, but a Markdown platform can handle raw HTML differently or restrict it. Confirm the target behavior before mixing formats. If the destination does not support the needed HTML, authoring it in the source will not ensure the desired page result.

Changing a working team convention without a concrete benefit

A theoretical preference is not always worth introducing a second format into an established workflow. Google’s guidance notes that a team or document template’s existing convention may be best followed. Consider changing it when a real content requirement, rendering limitation, or maintenance need justifies the shift.

Assuming a preview proves what the published page will contain

A preview shows how one tool interprets a document, not necessarily how every destination will. GitHub’s distinction between rendered Markdown and raw mode illustrates why the rendering context matters. Preview the content in the final destination or inspect the output generated by the actual publishing process when that is possible.

What the choice means for accessibility and SEO

Markdown and HTML are not competing guarantees of accessibility or SEO. HTML provides the semantic elements that describe the purpose and structure of web content, while Markdown may be the source that a renderer converts into those elements. The important question for a public page is whether the final HTML has meaningful structure.

MDN identifies semantic HTML text-content elements as important for accessibility and SEO, and GitHub documents Markdown rendering as an HTML output workflow. Taken together, those points mean that a Markdown-based process can be suitable for web content, but the quality of the generated markup still matters. This is a reason to verify the output, not a claim that Markdown itself makes a page inaccessible or that HTML alone guarantees a good result.

That distinction also prevents a common false choice. A team does not have to abandon Markdown merely because its content will appear on the web. It does need to know what its renderer produces and whether that output expresses the structure the content needs. HTML offers direct control; Markdown offers a readable authoring surface that may be converted into HTML. The right workflow is the one that produces the required structure and remains maintainable for its editors.

A quick decision rule

  • Use Markdown when the page is mostly structured prose, the destination supports the syntax, and readable source is a priority.
  • Use HTML when you need semantic elements, attributes, or a table structure beyond the Markdown dialect’s capabilities.
  • Use both selectively when Markdown handles the ordinary content and the target platform supports HTML for a specific exception.
  • Follow the workflow when a team template or publishing pipeline already determines the format.

When the output is a web page, make the decision only after accounting for the renderer and checking the generated result. The authoring format should make the work maintainable; the final markup should express the content correctly.

When should I use Markdown instead of HTML?

Use Markdown for ordinary prose and documentation when the target platform supports the syntax you need and readable source is useful to your editors. Check the destination’s dialect and rendering mode, especially if you rely on tables, extensions, or embedded HTML.

Can Markdown create HTML?

Yes. A publishing tool or renderer can convert Markdown into HTML; GitHub documents Markdown-to-HTML rendering through its API. The resulting markup depends on the renderer and mode, so inspect the actual output when its structure matters.

When should I use HTML for a table?

Use HTML when a table needs features beyond the Markdown dialect, such as a header column, block content within cells, classes, or attributes like colspan, rowspan, or scope. MDN also recommends HTML when Markdown table syntax becomes too wide to read.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Markdown accessible?

Markdown source alone does not guarantee accessible output, but it also does not make a page inaccessible. For web content, check that the renderer produces meaningful semantic HTML. MDN notes that semantic HTML text-content elements matter for accessibility and SEO.

Can I mix HTML and Markdown?

Sometimes. Markdown can handle ordinary content while HTML expresses a specific structure, but support for raw HTML varies by platform and renderer. Confirm that the destination accepts and renders the HTML you plan to include.

Does every Markdown renderer support the same syntax?

No. Markdown dialects and rendering modes differ. MDN uses GitHub-Flavored Markdown as a baseline and adds extensions, while GitHub’s raw mode does not support GFM. Test the features your content depends on in the actual destination.

The Bottom Line

Choose Markdown for readable, conventional structured content when the destination supports its syntax. Choose HTML when the required semantics, attributes, or table structures exceed that dialect. If you publish to the web, verify the renderer’s output: the source format does not by itself determine the final structure.
