Yes—you can write in Markdown and produce an editable Word document without paying for a converter. For repeatable Markdown-to-DOCX conversion, use Pandoc; for a workflow centered on editing and formatting in an office application, LibreOffice Writer can open and save Markdown. Pandoc also offers a browser-based converter when you do not want to install its command-line tool.

Choose Pandoc if Markdown is your source of truth and you want a direct, repeatable conversion. Choose Writer if you prefer to open Markdown in an editor and work with styles and templates there. With either route, check the finished document rather than assuming every formatting detail will carry over.
Convert a Markdown file to DOCX with Pandoc
Use the command line
Install Pandoc, open a terminal in the folder containing your Markdown file, and run:
pandoc draft.md -s -o draft.docxHere, draft.md is the input file and draft.docx is the output. Pandoc infers the output format from the .docx extension. The -s option creates a standalone document. The command follows the basic conversion pattern in Getting started with Pandoc.

Use the browser app
- Open the Pandoc browser app.
- Choose Markdown as the input format and DOCX as the output format.
- Set any needed conversion options, convert the file, and download the DOCX.
The app provides controls for headings, media, citations, math, templates, and reference documents. Pandoc says on the app page that it runs pandoc.wasm in the browser and that nothing is transmitted to its server. That is the app’s own statement, not an independent privacy or network audit.
Set Word styles with a Pandoc reference document
If you want generated DOCX files to follow a preferred Word style, use a reference DOCX. Pandoc’s guide recommends starting with a reference document produced by Pandoc, then modifying its styles. Add it to the command like this:

pandoc draft.md -s -o draft.docx --reference-doc=reference.docxThe Markdown supplies the document content; the reference file supplies style and document-property information, including settings such as page layout and headers or footers. It is not a substitute for the Markdown text. Pandoc also documents templates, filters, and format options for more involved workflows in its User’s Guide and on the Pandoc project site.

LibreOffice Writer’s Markdown help says Writer can open and save .md files. It also documents pasting Markdown into a Writer document, where paragraph, list, and character styles are applied, and using a template for custom formatting. The help page identifies Writer’s implementation as CommonMark.

That makes Writer an option if you want to handle formatting in the editor, but the cited help does not establish a particular one-click Markdown-to-DOCX export sequence. Menu labels and behavior can vary by installed release, so check the help for your version before relying on a specific set of steps.
Check the DOCX before sharing it
A successful conversion means the content was translated into a Word document; it does not guarantee that every source detail looks identical. Pandoc’s User’s Guide says it aims to preserve structural elements rather than formatting details such as margin size, and notes that some elements, including complex tables, may not fit its document model.

- Review headings, lists, links, code blocks, images, page breaks, and tables in Word or another DOCX-compatible editor.
- Confirm that the page layout and styles match your requirements; adjust the reference DOCX or Writer template if needed.
- Check syntax beyond basic headings, emphasis, lists, links, and code. Pandoc accepts multiple variants and extensions, while the cited Writer help identifies CommonMark support, so specialized Markdown features may not behave the same in both tools.
DOCX conversion is not PDF conversion
The workflow above creates a Word DOCX. It does not by itself create a PDF. Pandoc’s getting-started guide demonstrates PDF creation using a TeX installation; its manual also describes other PDF engines. If PDF is your final format, treat that as a separate output workflow and verify the required engine is installed.
