Neither MarineTraffic nor VesselFinder is universally more accurate. Both display Automatic Identification System (AIS) reports, so the better result depends on the target vessel, your location, the receiver source (terrestrial, satellite, or roaming), and how recently a position was received. For coastal and port viewing, compare each app’s timestamp and local receiver coverage. Offshore, choose the service showing the newer satellite report. MarineTraffic is a strong general-purpose consumer map with a documented satellite upgrade path; VesselFinder is particularly useful when you need explicit TER/SAT source labels, API access, credit-based queries, or port-call data.

The short answer: accuracy is vessel- and location-dependent

A ship-tracking app does not measure a vessel independently. It republishes AIS messages sent by the vessel and collected by shore stations, satellites, or other receiving networks. If the transponder is misconfigured, switched off, out of range, or transmitting stale data, both apps can show an old or misleading result.

For a practical decision, use this order of priority:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the position’s last-received time.
  2. Identify whether it came from terrestrial, satellite, or roaming reception.
  3. Prefer the app with the newer report from the appropriate source for that area.
  4. Validate critical movements with official navigation equipment or radar, not a public tracking app.

No controlled, independent head-to-head benchmark establishes a permanent winner. Published documentation explains how the services collect and expose AIS data, but it does not prove that one has lower positional error for every sea area or vessel.

What “accurate” means in an AIS tracker

Accuracy has several dimensions. A map icon can be geographically close to the ship yet still be unhelpful if it is hours old. Conversely, a fresh report can contain an incorrect destination or navigation status entered by the crew. Evaluate these separately:

Position error

AIS position, latitude, longitude, course, speed, heading, and navigational status are transmitted by the vessel’s equipment. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) revised AIS guidance states: “The accuracy of AIS information received is only as good as the accuracy of the AIS information transmitted.” A faulty GPS input, poor antenna installation, incorrect static data, or deliberate spoofing can therefore affect both services.

Freshness and latency

Freshness is the time between transmission, reception, processing, and display. Terrestrial reports near shore are generally collected more often. Satellite reports reach farther offshore but can arrive at longer intervals. Always read the timestamp attached to the position instead of assuming that a moving icon is live.

Completeness

A service may not show a vessel at all when no receiver has heard it recently. MarineTraffic says its terrestrial network does not cover 100% of the world’s seas and can remove a vessel from the Live Map after 24 hours without a fresh position. Absence from the map therefore does not prove that the ship stopped, sank, or turned off AIS.

Metadata quality

Ship name, call sign, destination, estimated time of arrival, dimensions, and navigation status are AIS fields with different update habits. Destination and ETA can be manually entered and remain stale even while position reports continue. Treat them as reported information, not independently verified schedules.

How MarineTraffic receives and presents AIS

Terrestrial coastal receivers

MarineTraffic explains that AIS messages periodically transmitted by vessels are picked up by its network of coastal receiving stations when a vessel is within range. This is why a ship approaching a harbor can produce frequent updates while the same ship may disappear after leaving the coastal footprint.

Coverage is not uniform. Receiver height, antenna quality, local interference, geography, and traffic volume affect how often a report is captured. In overlapping coverage, MarineTraffic documented server downsampling to one position per MMSI per minute on June 4, 2025. That processing rule can make a dense stream appear less frequent without indicating a navigation problem.

Satellite and roaming sources

MarineTraffic distinguishes terrestrial, satellite, and roaming sources in its support material. Satellite reception extends tracking beyond shore networks but typically produces less regular updates than a nearby terrestrial station. Roaming data can fill gaps where partner networks contribute a report, so the source and timestamp remain more informative than the logo on the map.

Live Map disappearance

MarineTraffic says a vessel can be removed from the Live Map after 24 hours without a fresh position. The removal is a display and data-freshness rule, not evidence that the vessel is no longer operating. Search results, historical information, or another service may still contain an older record.

How VesselFinder receives and exposes AIS

Terrestrial station network

VesselFinder documents thousands of terrestrial AIS stations. Its API identifies the source with fields such as TER for terrestrial and SAT for satellite, allowing an analyst to distinguish a frequent coastal fix from a less frequent offshore report.

Satellite coverage and latency

VesselFinder says satellite AIS is needed in remote and open-ocean areas. Its current product page reports that, on average, 90% of positions have latency under one hour. That is a vendor-reported average across its service, not a promise that every vessel, ocean region, or individual position will arrive within an hour. A particular ship can still have a longer gap because of satellite visibility, transmission behavior, processing, or equipment issues.

API fields and datasets

VesselFinder’s API documentation lists coordinates, course, speed, heading, timestamps, source labels, and other vessel fields. It also describes voyage, master-data, and port-call datasets. This makes it possible to build an audit trail that records not only where a vessel was shown, but when the record was received and whether it came from TER or SAT.

MarineTraffic vs VesselFinder: feature and data comparison

Characteristic MarineTraffic VesselFinder
Primary input Terrestrial coastal receivers, satellite AIS, and roaming sources Thousands of terrestrial stations plus satellite AIS
Source visibility Support documentation distinguishes terrestrial, satellite, and roaming; station attribution is documented API source field explicitly labels TER or SAT
Offshore behavior Satellite extends coverage but can update less frequently than coastal reception Satellite is intended for remote/open-ocean areas; 90% under one hour is a stated average
Public map use General consumer ship map and lookup General vessel lookup with detailed data services
API format Not stated in the cited material Official documentation lists JSON and XML APIs
Satellite API pricing unit Paid satellite options are documented; a comparable per-position credit rate is not stated 1 credit per terrestrial AIS position and 10 credits per satellite AIS position
Freshness rule documented Live Map removal after 24 hours without a fresh position; one-position-per-MMSI-per-minute server downsampling documented June 4, 2025 Latency statistics are published for satellite data; no equivalent universal map-removal rule is stated

These are architecture and product-documentation differences, not a measured error ranking. A VesselFinder satellite fix can be newer than a MarineTraffic terrestrial fix if the latter is delayed, and the reverse can also occur.

Which app is more accurate in coastal waters?

Near a busy port, bay, or shoreline, terrestrial reception usually determines the result. Compare the two records at the same moment and look for:

  • How many minutes ago each position was received.
  • Whether the source is terrestrial, satellite, or roaming.
  • Whether the vessel’s reported speed and course are plausible for its location.
  • Whether one app is showing a historical track point rather than a current fix.

If both apps show recent terrestrial reports, differences are often caused by receiver placement, processing schedules, or display smoothing rather than a fundamentally better AIS system. A service with more receivers in your particular harbor can appear more accurate there, while another may perform better a few miles away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which app is more accurate offshore?

Beyond terrestrial range, satellite availability and latency become the deciding factors. Select the app that provides the newest satellite timestamp for the vessel you care about. Do not infer that a satellite icon is wrong merely because it is several minutes or hours behind a coastal vessel’s updates; the collection path is different.

For long ocean passages, record a sequence of timestamps rather than judging one point. A track with regular, recent satellite fixes is more useful than a single apparently precise coordinate followed by a long silence. VesselFinder’s published “90% under one hour” figure can help set expectations for its service overall, but it does not guarantee continuity for a specific ship.

Why a ship may be missing or appear in the wrong place

No receiver in range

Terrestrial AIS stops being visible when the vessel is beyond the relevant shore-station footprint. Islands, mountains, antenna obstructions, and sparse receiver deployment can create gaps even when a ship is relatively close to land.

Satellite delay or incomplete pass

Satellite reception extends range but is not an uninterrupted live feed. Visibility, message collisions, onboard transmission intervals, processing queues, and network availability can all delay the next position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transponder or installation problems

The AIS unit may be powered down, malfunctioning, incorrectly connected to GPS, or transmitting malformed static data. IMO guidance places the fundamental accuracy limit on the information transmitted by the vessel.

Stale or manually entered fields

Destination, ETA, vessel type, and navigation status can remain unchanged after circumstances shift. A ship icon can therefore be correctly positioned while its destination text is outdated.

Overlapping reports and processing

Two receivers may hear the same transmission at slightly different times. Services deduplicate and process those reports, and MarineTraffic’s documented one-position-per-MMSI-per-minute downsampling can reduce the apparent update frequency in overlapping coverage.

Spoofing or deliberate interference

VesselFinder’s terms warn that AIS data may be incomplete, delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable because of equipment problems, reception gaps, spoofing, and limitations in third-party sources. Treat an implausible jump or impossible speed as a data-quality warning, not proof of a real maneuver.

  1. Choose a sample. Select several vessels that are continuously visible in your operating area, including at least one nearby coastal vessel and one ship farther offshore.
  2. Open each vessel record. At the same clock time, note the displayed latitude/longitude, course, speed, heading, and last-received time.
  3. Record the source. Write down terrestrial, satellite, roaming, or the equivalent source label. In VesselFinder API output, preserve the TER or SAT value.
  4. Repeat observations. Check at fixed intervals over several hours or days. One coincidental update cannot represent a service’s normal behavior.
  5. Compare freshness first. A newer report generally gives a better picture of current position than an older point with more decimal places.
  6. Flag contradictions. Mark impossible speeds, sudden jumps, stale destinations, and long gaps separately from ordinary position differences.
  7. Keep the geography attached to the result. A conclusion about one harbor or route should not be generalized to another sea area.

For engineering work, save the raw response and retrieval time as well as the displayed map time. That lets you distinguish an upstream delay from a browser or application refresh issue.

Using the services for API and data projects

When VesselFinder’s API model helps

VesselFinder is the clearer fit when source-aware data processing is central. Its documentation describes JSON/XML APIs, TER/SAT source labels, coordinates, course, speed, heading, timestamps, voyage and master data, and port-call datasets. You can filter analyses by source, exclude stale records, and price requests according to the documented credit model.

The published rates are one credit per terrestrial AIS position and 10 credits per satellite AIS position. Those are usage units in the API documentation, not a statement of total subscription cost. Confirm current plans and quotas before budgeting a production system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When MarineTraffic’s ecosystem helps

MarineTraffic’s documentation is useful when a project starts with a consumer map and may later need satellite coverage. Its support pages explain terrestrial, satellite, roaming, station attribution, and paid satellite options. Contributors can apply for a free pre-programmed AIS receiver, according to its support material, which may be relevant to organizations wanting to improve local terrestrial coverage.

Data hygiene for either API

  • Store the source type and original timestamp with every position.
  • Reject or quarantine records older than the freshness threshold appropriate to your use case.
  • Detect impossible jumps by checking distance, elapsed time, and reported speed.
  • Do not treat destination or ETA as authoritative scheduling data.
  • Retain the vessel’s MMSI so repeated reports can be joined reliably.

Live tracking, safety, and operational limits

“Live” in a public tracker means that the service has recently received and processed an AIS message; it does not mean a continuous, guaranteed feed. Terrestrial coverage can be frequent near shore, while satellite coverage may be intermittent offshore. A map can also be behind the vessel because of transmission, reception, processing, or application-refresh delays.

Public AIS apps are appropriate for situational awareness, family updates, education, logistics research, and locating a vessel of interest. They are not substitutes for radar, certified electronic navigation systems, visual lookout, official notices, or the vessel’s own instruments. Do not use an app position alone for collision avoidance, route clearance, search-and-rescue decisions, or other safety-critical actions.

Decision guide: choose by the job, not by the logo

Choose MarineTraffic when

  • You primarily want a consumer-friendly map and broad vessel lookup.
  • You need documented distinctions among terrestrial, satellite, and roaming data.
  • You may later require a paid satellite option for offshore viewing.
  • You are interested in contributing local AIS reception with a pre-programmed receiver.

Choose VesselFinder when

  • You need explicit TER/SAT labels in machine-readable data.
  • You are building an API integration or data pipeline.
  • You need voyage, master-data, or port-call datasets.
  • You want a documented credit distinction between terrestrial and satellite positions.

Use both when the vessel matters

For an important voyage, open both services and compare timestamp, source, course, and speed. If they disagree, the newer report is usually the better indication of current position, provided it is plausible. Preserve the disagreement as a data-quality event rather than silently selecting one brand as authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

MarineTraffic and VesselFinder publish useful information about their collection methods and limitations. MarineTraffic documents its coastal receiving network, source categories, 24-hour Live Map freshness rule, and server downsampling behavior. VesselFinder documents thousands of terrestrial stations, TER/SAT labels, API datasets, credit rates, and a satellite latency average. Neither set of materials supplies a controlled independent test that measures positional error across identical vessels and locations.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: compare the latest source-qualified report for the vessel and area you care about. Brand-level claims such as “MarineTraffic is always more accurate” or “VesselFinder is always live offshore” go beyond the available evidence.
