Available reports document marine-mammal deaths and stranding investigations in several Spanish regions, but they do not establish a single national death toll or a Spain-wide rise. Recent figures from Andalucía and Catalonia count different things; separate evidence describes historical ship strikes in the Canary Islands and an ongoing investigation into injuries to an orca.

What the recent figures do—and do not—show

The figures currently available are local or organization-specific, not a comparable national series. A necropsy count records post-mortem examinations; a stranding-service count records cases attended. Neither should be read as the total number of marine mammals that died in Spain.

Location and source Reported measure Period and qualification
Andalucía, regional government 43 necropsies; more than 800 since the service began 43 were performed in 2025; the cumulative figure dates from the service’s start in 2007. Junta de Andalucía, 5 October 2026
CRAM, Catalonia 10 cetacean cases: nine animals found dead and one alive January–March 2026, compared with 13 cetacean cases in the same quarter of 2025. These are CRAM cases, not a national count. Fundación CRAM, first-quarter 2026 report
Canary Islands, SECAC 81 sperm-whale stranding records; 44 of 49 animals with a determined cause of death were linked to vessel collision Records cover 2000–2018. The 44/49 share applies only to the subset with a determined cause, not all strandings, species or regions. SECAC project page

These measures cannot be added together or used to infer whether deaths are increasing nationally. They involve different areas, time periods, species and methods of counting.

How stranding services investigate deaths

Necropsies help identify causes

A necropsy is a post-mortem examination. Andalucía’s regional service says its examinations help identify causes of mortality, areas of risk and possible conservation measures. Results apply to the examined animals; they do not automatically establish one cause for other strandings.

Stranding programs also respond to live animals. Andalucía describes year-round response, veterinary assessment and possible recovery and release for live stranded animals, alongside health assessment and cause-of-death work for dead cetaceans. Reports in the region can be made through 112. Junta de Andalucía stranding program

What a single case can establish

A 2024 ACCOBAMS meeting report describes a Cuvier’s beaked whale that stranded alive on the Almería coast on 26 November 2024 and later died; it summarizes necropsy findings. It illustrates how a post-mortem examination can add case-specific information, but one animal cannot establish a broader trend. ACCOBAMS report

Threats documented in particular contexts

Vessel collisions and sperm whales

SECAC’s historical Canary Islands records point to vessel collision as a major threat for sperm whales in that regional sample. The finding is not evidence that collisions account for the same share of deaths among all marine mammals in Spain today. SECAC describes passive acoustic monitoring and photo-identification as ways to improve knowledge and inform risk mapping.

Accidental capture in fishing gear

Spain’s Order APA/1200/2020 sets out measures to mitigate accidental cetacean captures during fishing and improve scientific knowledge of the issue. The order establishes a policy response; by itself it does not quantify deaths from bycatch or show whether the measures have been effective. Order APA/1200/2020, Spain’s Official State Gazette

The Toñi orca investigation is not a confirmed finding of responsibility

In August 2026, Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) reported marks on an orca known as Toñi that were compatible with shotgun pellets and said preliminary investigative proceedings had begun. On 2 September, the ministry said it had referred information to environmental prosecutors and the Guardia Civil, citing indications of a possible offense. The notices describe reported injuries and an investigation; they do not identify a perpetrator or establish a final legal finding. MITECO, 2 September 2026 MITECO, 14 August 2026

Orca-vessel interactions are a separate issue from mortality. MITECO’s 1 April 2026 summary said interactions in Spain generally declined during summer 2025, while the number rose slightly in Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast compared with 2024. Those reports concern interactions, not deaths. The ministry also described seasonal risk maps and advice for boaters. MITECO, 1 April 2026

If you find a stranded cetacean

Do not touch, move or try to assist a stranded dolphin, whale or other cetacean. Contact 112 and wait for trained responders. CRAM warns that direct handling or assistance should be avoided; an animal may need specialist care, and the public should leave its assessment to the response team. Fundación CRAM guidance

What can be concluded about deaths in Spain

Regional monitoring documents dead and live strandings, while particular sources identify specific concerns such as vessel collisions in a historical Canary Islands sperm-whale sample, accidental fishery captures addressed by national policy, and reported injuries under investigation in an individual orca. The available figures do not establish a current national death total, a single cause, or a country-wide trend. Necropsies and consistent, regionally identified records are needed to understand individual cases and assess risks without conflating unlike data.
