The most useful marathon-training gadgets are the ones that solve a problem you actually have: tracking distance, carrying water or fuel, or managing dark routes. A GPS watch is convenient, not mandatory, and no runner needs to buy all nine items below. Choose only what fits your training, route and preferences.
1. GPS running watch: track pace and distance
A GPS watch can record a run’s time, distance and pace, and some models add wrist-based heart-rate readings, suggested workouts or course features. The Akron Marathon’s 2023 training toolkit says a GPS watch makes distance tracking easier but is not necessary; a phone or another method may already meet your needs.
As examples of manufacturer-stated specifications, Garmin’s Singapore product page lists the Forerunner 165 with built-in GPS and up to 19 hours in GPS-only GNSS mode. Garmin lists the Forerunner 265 with a marathon race widget, personalized workouts and up to 20 hours in GPS mode. These are model-specific claims from Garmin, not independent test results; check the current page for your region before relying on specifications. Garmin Forerunner 165 · Garmin Forerunner 265

GPS distance is an estimate: a 2022 study by Joe Dumas examined three Garmin generations on one repeated route, so its findings should not be generalized to every model or running environment. Read the study abstract. Garmin also says the Forerunner 165 is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor medical conditions; treat its heart-rate and wellness features accordingly.

- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance

2. Hydration carry: bottle, belt or vest
A handheld bottle, hydration belt or vest can make fluids easier to carry on longer outings. The Akron Marathon’s 2023 training toolkit describes these options as helpful for runs of an hour or more, especially on hot training days. The right choice depends on what you need to carry and what feels manageable over a long run; the guidance does not establish a universal drinking amount.
- Handheld bottle: a straightforward option if you want to carry a bottle without wearing a pack.
- Belt: useful if you prefer hands-free carrying and the fit stays comfortable.
- Vest: consider it when your route calls for more storage or you prefer distributing what you carry across your torso.
Try the intended setup on training runs. Check for bounce, rubbing, easy access and whether it holds what you need.
Rank #2
- Easy-to-use running smartwatch with built-in GPS for pace/distance and wrist-based heart rate; brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls; lightweight design in 43 mm size

- As soon as you wake up, get your morning report with an overview of your sleep, recovery and training outlook alongside weather and HRV status (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
3. Running gels or chews: practice your race-day fuel
Gels and chews are compact ways to carry fuel, but tolerance and preference vary. The Akron Marathon toolkit recommends trying gels during training, while a recent runner discussion reflects individual preferences rather than a representative survey. Test the product and timing you plan to use on training runs, and follow a plan suited to you rather than treating any one product or schedule as universal.
4. Wireless or open-ear headphones: optional audio
Wireless headphones can make audio easier to manage during a run, and open-ear styles may appeal to runners who want to hear more of their surroundings. The Akron Marathon toolkit calls headphones a nice-to-have for people who like audio; a runner’s discussion praising open-ear headphones is anecdotal, not proof of a safety benefit. Check your event’s headphone rules before race day.

- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run

5. Running belt or pocketed apparel: carry small essentials
A belt or clothing with secure pockets can hold a phone, keys or fuel. Runners in a recent discussion mention both approaches, but those comments are personal reports, not a controlled comparison. Choose based on what you carry and whether the item stays comfortable and stable at your training pace. If you sweat heavily, check pocket placement and how securely items are held while moving.
6. Separate heart-rate monitor: a conditional add-on
A separate heart-rate sensor is worth considering only if you want one and your watch or training setup supports it. The Forerunner 165 and 265 already include wrist-based heart-rate features, so a separate monitor is not a basic requirement. Confirm sensor compatibility before buying; the sources here do not establish an independent accuracy comparison between wrist readings and separate monitors.

7. Reflective or lighting gear: for dark routes
A lit vest or chest light may be useful when your training route or schedule puts you in low-light conditions. These items came up in an individual runner discussion, which is anecdotal evidence rather than an official safety standard. Choose visibility gear according to where and when you run, and do not assume one item makes every route safe.
8. Foam roller or massage tool: optional comfort equipment
A foam roller or massage tool is an optional way to work on comfort if you like using one. The available evidence does not establish that these tools prevent injury, speed recovery or improve performance, so they should not be treated as necessary marathon equipment.

9. Training log or marathon book: keep the plan organized
A paper or digital log can help you record runs and follow a structured plan. No particular book or plan is established here as the right choice. Use a format you can maintain, and choose a plan that suits your experience, schedule and goals rather than buying a book simply because it is marketed for marathon training.
Quick Recap
How to choose what to bring into training
- Start with what you already own. If a phone records your runs and you can carry essentials comfortably, a dedicated watch or belt may add little.
- Match gear to the route. Consider duration, heat, available access to fluids, darkness and what you need to carry.
- Check compatibility and event rules. Confirm watch-sensor pairing or phone support, and review race-day headphone policies.
- Try intended equipment during training. Use the shoes, carry setup, audio and fuel you expect to use on race day so you can identify fit or tolerance problems beforehand.
- Buy to solve a specific need. The nine categories are options, not a shopping list or a tested ranking.
