Start by checking where the drive is missing: This PC, the Network view, or only when you try to open a listed drive. Those symptoms point to different problems. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance recommends checking that the host computer is on and that you have permission to access its share, then recreating the mapping if needed. Turning on Network discovery helps devices appear in Network view; it does not repair an existing mapping or grant access to a share. Microsoft Support’s file-sharing guide covers both Windows versions.

First identify where the drive is missing

Open File Explorer and check This PC and, separately, the Network view. Note whether the drive is absent, listed but marked disconnected, or listed but producing an error when opened. The distinction matters: Network discovery controls browsing for devices, while a mapped drive uses a specific network path and access rights.

  • Not listed in This PC: Check whether the mapping was created for this Windows sign-in and whether it should reconnect automatically.
  • Not visible under Network: If Windows says Network discovery is turned off, enable it to browse devices that share files on the local network.
  • Listed but disconnected or inaccessible: Check the network connection, the host computer, the share path, and your permissions.

These are separate checks, not proof of one universal Windows defect. Microsoft’s current guidance identifies host availability and permissions as possible causes of a failed connection, and describes Network discovery as a way to see devices on the local network.

Check the network and the computer hosting the share

  1. Confirm that the PC is connected to the network where the shared folder is available. If you are away from that network, check with your organization or network administrator about the required connection.
  2. Confirm that the computer or storage device serving the shared folder is turned on and reachable.
  3. If you can reach the host but cannot open the folder, ask its owner or your administrator to confirm that your account has access to that share.

A drive can be missing from browsing even while a known share path remains usable. Conversely, seeing a device in Network does not confirm that you have permission to open its shared folders.

Turn on Network discovery only when browsing is the problem

If File Explorer’s Network view reports that Network discovery is turned off, enable Network discovery in Windows’ network-sharing settings. This setting helps show devices on the local network that share files. It does not recreate a missing mapped drive, correct an incorrect network path, or change permissions on the remote share. If you already know the share path, test that path by mapping it directly instead of treating Network browsing as the only way to connect.

Recreate the mapping in File Explorer

Use Microsoft’s File Explorer procedure when the drive is absent from This PC or the existing mapping is no longer usable:

  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Choose Map network drive. In Windows 11, this may be under More; Microsoft also notes that you can right-click This PC in the folder pane.
  3. Choose an available drive letter.
  4. Enter the network folder path, or browse to the folder or computer you want to connect to.
  5. If you want the mapping to return when you sign in, select Reconnect at sign-in.
  6. Select Finish. If the connection fails, recheck that the host is on, the path is correct, and your account has access.

Use the path supplied by the share owner or administrator rather than guessing it. A drive letter only labels the mapping on your PC; it does not identify or grant access to the remote folder by itself.

If the drive disappears after sleep or sign-in

When a mapped drive appears disconnected immediately after waking the PC, a temporary network or session reconnection issue is possible. First let Windows reconnect to the network, then try opening the drive again. If the behavior repeats, note whether it occurs after every sign-in or only after sleep, along with your Windows version, before pursuing a more specific fix.

Microsoft’s sleep/resume examples cited for this symptom concern older systems, not a demonstrated Windows 10 or Windows 11 defect:

  • A historical Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 case describes an SMB session being deleted on the server side after standby or resume, producing a temporary location-unavailable error.
  • A separate Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 case involving Offline Files describes a delay of more than two minutes after waking before mapped drives became accessible, because client-side caching tried to reconnect before the network was available.
  • Another Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 case concerns Group Policy Preferences and a non-persistent mapping appearing disconnected while the client was offline. Its finding is specific to that older scenario, not a general recommendation to change persistence settings on current Windows.

These legacy cases are useful only if the operating system and circumstances match; they should not be used to diagnose every disconnected drive on a current PC.

When to ask the share owner or administrator

Contact the person responsible for the shared folder if the host is online but the path fails, you do not know the correct path, or your account may not have access. Include what you see—whether the drive is absent, marked disconnected, or returns an error when opened—and whether the issue occurs only after sign-in or waking from sleep. This helps distinguish a mapping or path problem from host availability and permissions.
