Penguin Colony is an Antarctic cosmic-horror game that turns the usual Lovecraftian viewpoint inside out: players encounter the story as penguins, while human explorers bring the danger. Developed by Origame Digital, the game is the work of Ngāi Te Rangi developer Naphtali Faulkner, who uses that perspective to examine colonial myth-making as well as the assumptions embedded in H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction.
What is Penguin Colony about?
Set in Antarctica in 1939, Penguin Colony follows rival human groups searching for an ancient being. Players experience the events through penguins rather than through the expedition members. Publisher Fellow Traveller describes the game as a reimagining of Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and other stories. Lenval Brown is credited as narrator, and the Steam listing identifies the game as single-player.
That change in viewpoint gives the horror a different center of gravity. The humans treat Antarctica as a place to explore, claim, and interpret; the penguins are at home there. As Faulkner put it to ABC Arts: “The penguin is having a great time because it’s supposed to be there,” he says. “Antarctica is its home. It’s these European guys who don’t belong there who are having the worst day of their lives.” ABC Arts, October 11, 2026.

Why tell Lovecraftian horror from a penguin’s perspective?
Faulkner’s approach is not simply to put a familiar monster story in an unusual setting. In an interview with ABC Arts, he says Lovecraft’s racism is part of understanding the stories, not an incidental detail to ignore. He sees the unexamined assumptions of Lovecraft’s white characters as a source of horror in their own right: “Most adaptations are trying to scare you with gore or tentacles or otherworldly looking stuff. That’s not the scariest thing about Lovecraft,” Faulkner says. “The scariest thing about Lovecraft is how it makes assumptions about things and all the white characters just nod along with it.” ABC Arts.
That reading shifts attention from the spectacle of the unknown to the people who claim authority over it. The penguins’ presence makes the explorers’ sense of entitlement more visible: the humans are outsiders, yet they behave as though their explanations and ambitions should define the place. The game’s critical framing does not endorse Lovecraft’s racial worldview; it uses the source material to question how such assumptions shape a story.

How does the game connect colonialism and myth-making?
Faulkner told ABC Arts that the game explores how settlers construct historical myths to legitimize claims and power. He cited “Celtic New Zealand,” a pseudohistorical claim that Anglo settlers arrived before Māori, as an example of the kind of story used to challenge Indigenous presence. In the game, an Antarctic faction pursues relics to support its own racial mythology. That is a fictional plot device, not historical evidence.

Faulkner describes the mechanism this way: “They just make that [history] up. The game’s story is about exploring how they do this and the tools and mechanisms that allow this colonial myth-making to happen,” he says. ABC Arts, October 11, 2026.

The connection to cosmic horror is pointed: the game places human efforts to impose a racialized account of history beside a threat that exceeds human understanding. The question is not only what the explorers find, but how they turn discovery into a story that serves their ambitions.
How do the penguins shape play?
ABC Arts reports that players control multiple penguins with different capabilities. The game uses narrative vignettes and objects that can be missed, rather than presenting every piece of information as a guaranteed stop on a checklist. Wind also serves as a directional cue. These elements encourage players to notice and interpret the environment instead of assuming that one playthrough reveals everything.

Faulkner connects this fragmentary, discovery-oriented design to a respectful-design framework associated with Wiradjuri professor Norman Sheehan. Sheehan’s idea, as Faulkner quotes it, is that “Indigenous knowledge says human beings don’t create knowledge between their ears: the thing between their ears is a sponge that sees things out in the world and absorbs them.” ABC Arts.
In this account, exploration is not just a route to collecting all available information. Different players may encounter different details, and that partial view can make the world feel larger rather than incomplete by mistake. Faulkner says: “When players realise that their playthrough didn’t give them everything, but it did give someone something else, I think they’re going to view the world [as] a little bit bigger than they thought it was before.” ABC Arts.

What to know before looking for the game
- Developer: Origame Digital. ABC Arts identifies Faulkner as a Ngāi Te Rangi developer based in Melbourne.
- Publisher: Fellow Traveller.
- Setting and premise: Antarctica, 1939; rival human groups pursue an ancient being, with players seeing events through penguins.
- Format: Single-player, according to the Steam store listing.
- Availability: Release-date information in search results has conflicted. The live store page is the most appropriate place to check current timing.
For additional context on the source fiction, readers can turn to Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, which Fellow Traveller names as an influence. Reading it is optional; the game’s own premise and critical perspective do not require prior familiarity with the story.
Why the viewpoint matters
Penguin Colony makes the Antarctic setting more than a backdrop for an unknowable threat. By placing players with animals native to the place, it reframes the human expedition as an intrusion and connects cosmic horror to the stories people invent to justify power. Its design, as described by Faulkner, also treats incomplete discovery as a way to acknowledge that no single player necessarily sees the whole world.
