Self-hosting is usually the cheapest cash option when you already own an always-on computer and have an internet connection that accepts inbound traffic. The Terraria server software is free, but you become responsible for port forwarding, firewall rules, updates, backups, restarts, monitoring and outage recovery. Managed hosting adds a recurring fee and supplies the machine and much of the operational work.

The right choice depends on your total cost, not just the advertised monthly price. Compare electricity, hardware, storage and your time with the managed plan’s fee, backup policy, player capacity, mod support, location and cancellation terms.

What you are actually buying

A Terraria server has two distinct costs: the software and the operation of the machine that runs it. The dedicated server files are available free from terraria.org for Windows, Linux and macOS. That removes a software licence fee, but it does not remove the work required to keep a world reachable and recoverable.

Self-hosting

With a self-hosted server, a computer in your home or your own cloud instance runs the Terraria process. You select or create the world, expose the game port, configure the firewall, keep the process alive, apply updates, make and test backups, and diagnose failures. You retain complete access to the files and configuration, but every operational task belongs to you.

Managed hosting

A managed host supplies the running machine and wraps it in a control panel or hosting workflow. Depending on the plan, the provider may include manual backups, scheduled restarts, monitoring and Terraria-focused support. You pay for that convenience and for infrastructure designed to remain online, while still checking exactly what the plan includes.

Godlike.Host offers Terraria servers with its own game panel, a built-in mod installer, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket.

  • Electricity: Count the power used by the computer and any networking or backup equipment that must remain on. A universal bill cannot be stated without the machine’s measured wattage, local energy rate and operating schedule.
  • Incremental internet cost: Include a higher-tier connection only if your current plan cannot support the server’s availability or traffic needs. The required capacity depends on player activity and your provider’s terms.
  • Backup and storage: Include external drives, a second machine or cloud storage if you want protection from disk failure or accidental world deletion.
  • Hardware amortization: If you buy a mini-PC, upgrade a router or add storage, spread that upfront cost across the service life you expect. If suitable hardware is already idle, its incremental amortization for this decision may be zero, but electricity and labor remain.
  • Operator time: Assign a value to setup, updates, checking logs, restarting after a crash, testing restores and helping players reconnect. This is the cost most “free server” comparisons omit.

For managed hosting:

Managed monthly cost = hosting fee + optional backups, extra storage, premium support or higher slot/mod requirements.

A Puranode listing checked in 2026 advertised a 2 GB Terraria server from €5.99 per month, VAT included, with no setup fee. Treat that as a dated example, not a universal market price: provider prices, taxes, locations and included features change.

What the free server software requires

The official setup documentation describes downloading dedicated-server files from terraria.org and running them on Windows, Linux or macOS. You then select an existing world or create one and start the server with its configuration. The software cost is zero; the practical baseline is determined by the machine, connection and administration around it.

Memory and player limits

The official reference lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world and notes that RAM use varies with world size and player count. The documented default maximum is 16 players, configurable at startup or in the server configuration. These figures are starting points, not promises that every world will perform identically. Mods, larger worlds and more simultaneous activity can change the requirement.

Network path

Terraria uses port 7777 by default. A home host normally needs a router port-forwarding rule and a firewall rule. A cloud deployment must allow both TCP and UDP traffic on 7777 in its network or security-group settings. If you run more than one server, assign separate ports and expose each one deliberately rather than sending all traffic to the same process.

Connection quality

The official guide says Ethernet is generally faster than Wi-Fi. Connect the host by Ethernet where possible, especially when the machine is also handling backups or other network activity. The server can still work over a wireless link, but a wired path removes one avoidable source of latency and disconnects.

  1. Prepare the host. Use a computer that can remain powered on for the hours you want the world available. Install current system updates, connect it by Ethernet when practical, and create a dedicated account or directory for the server files.
  2. Download the dedicated server. Get the server package from terraria.org for Windows, Linux or macOS. Keep the server files separate from personal documents so that permissions and backups are easier to manage.
  3. Create or select a world. Start the server, choose an existing world or generate a new one, and set the maximum players and other options in the startup prompts or configuration file. The default maximum is 16 players, but you can set a lower or higher value appropriate to your setup and version.
  4. Set the listening port. Keep the default 7777 unless another service already uses it. For multiple Terraria instances, assign a unique port to each instance and record the mapping between port and world.
  5. Configure the firewall. Allow the Terraria server process and the selected port through the host firewall. For a cloud machine, add inbound TCP and UDP 7777 to the instance’s network rules as well; opening only one protocol can produce inconsistent connectivity.
  6. Configure the router for a home server. Forward external port 7777 to the host’s local address. Reserve that local address in the router or assign it in a way that will not change, then test from a connection outside your home network.
  7. Keep the process running. On Linux and macOS, run the server inside tmux or screen so it continues after you detach from the terminal. On Windows, use a service, scheduled task or another supervised process that you understand and can stop safely before updates.
  8. Document the world location and settings. Record the world-file path, port, player limit, startup command and any passwords or permissions. The official guides describe world-file locations and configuration files; use those paths when planning backups.
  9. Back up before every risky change. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world file to separate storage, and label the backup with its date and world name. Periodically perform a restore test on a spare copy so you know the files are usable.
  10. Plan updates and restarts. Announce maintenance, stop the process cleanly, apply the server update, verify that the world loads, and keep the previous files until players have confirmed that the new instance works.

What managed hosting removes—and what it does not

A managed plan shifts infrastructure and routine operations to a provider. You normally receive a control panel to start or stop the instance, select a world, change settings and inspect files. Provider pages may advertise manual backups, scheduled restarts and support; those features are valuable only when their scope and retention are clear.

Questions to answer before paying

  • Where are the files? Confirm that you can download the world, configuration and logs, not merely click “reset.”
  • How do backups work? Check whether backups are automatic or manual, how many versions are retained, where they are stored and whether restoring one overwrites the current world.
  • What does “restart” mean? A scheduled restart may stop and start the process, but it does not necessarily apply updates or repair a corrupted world.
  • Which Terraria and mod versions are supported? Verify compatibility with the game version and with tModLoader or other mod requirements before moving an existing world.
  • How many players and how much memory are included? Compare the plan’s memory and slot limits with your expected world size and player count; the 500 MB small-world reference is not a universal capacity guarantee.
  • Where is the data center? Geographic distance affects latency. Ask where the instance is located and whether you can change locations later.
  • What happens during maintenance or an outage? Read the maintenance policy, support hours and escalation route. Do not infer an uptime guarantee unless the plan states one.
  • What is the renewal and cancellation policy? A promotional first month can differ from the recurring price. Check taxes, billing interval, refunds and how long files remain available after cancellation.

Side-by-side decision factors

Axis Self-hosted Managed host
Cash cost when suitable hardware already exists Often the lowest; server software is downloadable Recurring monthly fee
Upfront hardware You supply or purchase the computer, storage and networking equipment Included in the plan
Router and firewall work Your responsibility; port 7777 is typical Usually abstracted by the provider
24/7 availability Depends on home power, internet and the host machine Main reason to pay; verify maintenance and any stated service commitment
Backups and restarts You build, schedule and verify them Often available, but retention and restore scope vary
File and mod control Maximum control over files, versions and launch options Depends on the panel, permissions and plan
Maintenance time High operator responsibility Lower, but updates, world management and compatibility checks remain yours

Reliability is the hidden DIY bill

A home server is available only while the host is powered, the router is online and the internet path accepts connections. A reboot for an operating-system update, a brief outage or a crashed process can take the world offline. If your group plays at a fixed time, someone must notice the failure and restore service.

Reliability work includes monitoring whether the process is alive, checking disk space, rotating backups, testing a restore, applying Terraria updates and communicating planned downtime. A managed provider may automate some of these tasks, but you still need a copy of the world and a recovery plan. Convenience is not the same as ownership.

A minimum recovery plan

  • Keep at least one world backup on a different device or service from the live server.
  • Record the server version, launch options, port and world path with the backup.
  • Test restoring a copy without overwriting the live world.
  • Know how to stop the server cleanly before copying or replacing a world file.
  • Keep the previous server files until the updated instance has loaded and players have connected successfully.

Mods, permissions and data ownership

Self-hosting gives you direct access to the executable, configuration and world files, so you can choose versions and launch options without a provider’s panel limits. That control also means you must resolve file permissions, incompatible versions and safe update order yourself.

Managed plans differ. Some allow file-manager or FTP-style access; others restrict system-level changes. Confirm tModLoader or other mod-loader support, upload limits, restart behavior after a mod change and whether support will troubleshoot mod conflicts. Download a copy of your world regularly even when the provider advertises backups, because cancellation or a failed restore can otherwise leave you dependent on the provider.

When a VPS is the middle option

A Linux VPS can provide a remote, always-on machine without placing hardware in your home. It is not the same as fully managed hosting: you still install the Terraria server, allow TCP and UDP 7777 in the cloud firewall, configure backups, apply updates and recover from failures. The VPS provider supplies infrastructure, while you remain the administrator.

This option suits a technically confident owner who wants a fixed public address and remote access but is comfortable with Linux administration. Compare the VPS price, included storage, backup options, data-center location and bandwidth policy with a Terraria-focused managed plan. Do not assume that a low virtual-machine price includes game support or automated world protection.

Common failure points and fixes

Players cannot connect from outside your home

  • Confirm the server is listening on the intended port, normally 7777.
  • Check both the host firewall and the router’s forwarding rule.
  • Verify that the forwarding rule points to the host’s current local address.
  • For cloud deployments, check both TCP and UDP rules in the provider’s network controls.
  • Test from an external connection rather than relying only on a device inside the same home network.

The world disappears after a restart

  • Check that the startup command points to the intended world-file path.
  • Confirm that the process has permission to read and write that directory.
  • Keep dated copies before changing configuration so you can restore the previous world.

The server stops when you close the terminal

Run the process inside tmux or screen on Linux or macOS, then detach instead of closing the session. On Windows, use a supervised service or scheduled task and test that it restarts cleanly after a controlled stop.

A managed plan does not behave as expected

  • Read the plan’s backup retention and restore instructions before making changes.
  • Check whether a scheduled restart is enabled and whether it runs in the server’s stated time zone.
  • Verify the installed Terraria and mod-loader versions against the world you uploaded.
  • Ask support where the files are stored and download a current copy before cancelling.

Which option fits your situation?

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have a suitable computer that can remain on.
  • Your router and internet connection can accept inbound traffic.
  • You want maximum file, mod and configuration control.
  • You are willing to perform backups, updates, restarts and troubleshooting.
  • Your group can tolerate occasional downtime or you have the skills to improve resilience.

Choose managed hosting when

  • You need a public, continuously available world without maintaining home hardware.
  • You value a control panel, scheduled restarts, provider backups or Terraria-specific support.
  • Your time is worth more than the recurring fee.
  • You have checked player slots, memory, mod support, data-center location, retention and renewal pricing.

Choose a VPS when

  • You want remote infrastructure but are comfortable administering Linux, firewalls, backups and updates.
  • You need more control than a game-hosting panel provides and accept that support will be infrastructure-focused.

A final decision checklist

  1. Write down the hours the world must be available and the expected peak player count.
  2. Measure or estimate the host computer’s power use and apply your local electricity rate.
  3. List any hardware, router or storage purchases and spread them across the service life you expect.
  4. Assign a realistic value to your monthly administration time.
  5. For each managed plan, record the recurring price, taxes, memory, slots, location, backups, restart tools, mod support and cancellation terms.
  6. Compare like with like: 24/7 availability, player capacity, world backups, restart automation, geographic location, file access and mod compatibility.
  7. Pick the option whose total cost and failure-recovery burden match your group, not the option with the lowest headline number.

Bottom line

If the hardware and connection are already in your home, DIY hosting can cost less in cash because the Terraria server software is free. Its real price is electricity, equipment wear, backup storage and the value of the time you spend keeping the world online and recoverable. Managed hosting is a convenience purchase: a current example starts at €5.99 per month for 2 GB, but the useful comparison is the complete plan and its renewal terms. Pay for managed service when reliability and saved maintenance time matter more than maximum control; self-host when you want control and are prepared to operate the server yourself.
