nkt is an open-source Linux host and fleet-management tool whose creator says he rewrote its backend and terminal interface from Python to Go to make deployment across varied servers easier. Alex Sashin’s September 30, 2026 DEV Community post presents it as a local auditing tool and a central control plane for managing multiple Linux hosts—not as a replacement for every administrative SSH session. Its capabilities and size figures below are the author’s descriptions, not independently verified test results.
Why the project moved from Python to Go
Sashin says the original internal tool became difficult to distribute across heterogeneous VPS and ARM environments. In his account, deployment involved per-host virtual environments, differing system Python versions, dependency conflicts, and a cryptography dependency that sometimes required Rust compilation. He also reports PyInstaller bundles of about 200 MB and glibc-related failures, alongside slow, memory-intensive parsing of configuration and iptables state. These are explanations of the project’s history from its author, not a published comparison or benchmark.
The rewrite moved the backend and terminal user interface (TUI) to Go while retaining the React/Ant Design frontend. Sashin describes the resulting workflow as producing a single binary and cross-compiling it for managed hosts. The author gives two different approximate sizes for nkt in the same post—about 30 MB in the rewrite discussion and about 25 MB in its conclusion—so the article supports only an approximate 25–30 MB range. He separately reports nkt-edge at about 8 MB. These figures are author-reported, not independently measured.

What nkt is intended to do
The post calls the project NetKnownsThat (nkt) and says it was open-sourced after internal use. It describes two ways to use it: as a tool for inspecting an individual Linux host, and through a central Hub for managing a fleet.

Host audits against configuration and live state
According to Sashin, nkt parses configuration for nginx, HAProxy, Caddy, Docker Compose, UFW, and firewalld, then compares configured intent with live host state, including listening sockets and running containers. Reported findings include file and line details, with suggested corrections. This description does not establish how complete the parsers are, which distribution versions they support, or how reliably a finding identifies a problem.
Editing, visibility, and security-related features
The author also describes configuration editing with validation before changes are applied and rollback if validation fails, plus resource-topology visualization and fleet-level fail2ban controls. He says the tool includes heuristic indicators for possible malware and a reverse TLS fallback channel intended to preserve management access if SSH fails. These are project claims, not guarantees of safe changes, malware detection, secure access, or reliable recovery. A post announcing a tool is not a security assessment.

How the central Hub workflow is described
In the post’s account, the Hub runs on a central VPS and connects to managed hosts over SSH. It detects a host’s architecture, cross-compiles an nkt binary, transfers it over SFTP, and installs a systemd unit. This is the author’s description of the deployment model; the post also provides Docker Compose instructions for running the Hub and build-and-install instructions for local use.

A central service that connects to servers still depends on SSH credentials and permissions, and the post alone does not establish its credential-handling practices, role controls, audit logging, or recovery behavior. Before entrusting it with production systems, inspect the current project documentation and code and test access boundaries and rollback behavior in a non-production environment.

Which capabilities are marked beta
Sashin’s September 30, 2026 post labels GitOps/deployment and expanded Kubernetes management as beta. The described GitOps workflow uses Git-triggered deployments and an nkt-edge relay for webhook delivery behind NAT. The Kubernetes-related description includes cluster provisioning and a WireGuard mesh. Treat these as beta features as characterized in that dated post; their current availability or maturity is not independently confirmed here.
What to verify before using it on production hosts
The announcement describes a broad feature set, but does not supply independent validation of compatibility, security, or reliability. Evaluate the project against the risks and requirements of your own fleet before making it part of an operational workflow.

- Operational controls: Confirm whether the current implementation provides the audit logging, role separation, and review controls your team requires.
- Release status: Distinguish stable functions from features described as beta in the September 30, 2026 post, especially before relying on deployment or Kubernetes workflows.
