Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who worked as an OpenAI engineer, was arrested on October 9, 2026, after federal prosecutors accused him of placing a concealed audio-recording device in an executive conference room. The U.S. Department of Justice says the room was used for discussions involving confidential technical, commercial and strategic matters. The complaint does not establish that usable audio was captured or that any OpenAI information left the company. A report identifying Elon Musk as Alfozan’s role model is attributed to Gizmodo reporter AJ Dellinger, not to a verified primary interview.
Who is Abdulrahman Alfozan?
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Alfozan had been employed as an OpenAI engineer since July 2025. He was arrested on October 9, 2026, and charged under the federal wiretapping statute with allegedly using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications.
The charge comes from a criminal complaint, not a finding of guilt. Alfozan is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The complaint describes two recording devices and a series of security discoveries at OpenAI:

The DOJ says closed-circuit television footage placed Alfozan near the conference room on several dates, even though he allegedly lacked authorization to enter it. The room was used for meetings concerning proprietary research, product plans, business-development opportunities, technical progress, strategic decisions, capabilities, priorities, government engagements and commercial relationships.
What the alleged devices were intended to do
The complaint links an online chatbot account associated with Alfozan’s spouse to prompts submitted from September 24 through September 30. Prosecutors say those prompts asked about building, customizing, installing, testing, disguising and remotely accessing an audio-recording device.

- Obfuscating the device and accessing it remotely.
The same account allegedly sent prompts containing the recording device’s custom header and unique media-access-control (MAC) address. Those details are cited as evidence connecting the technical instructions to the hardware, but they do not by themselves prove that confidential information was successfully recorded or transmitted.
Why Elon Musk is mentioned
Gizmodo reporter AJ Dellinger wrote that Alfozan had identified Elon Musk as his role model. The available reporting does not include a primary interview transcript or a verified verbatim quotation from Alfozan. That makes the role-model detail a reported biographical claim rather than an independently confirmed statement.

The mention of Musk does not appear in the DOJ’s description of the wiretapping charge, and the complaint does not establish that Musk influenced the alleged conduct. It is included in coverage because it provides personal context about the accused, not because it is evidence of the alleged recording operation.
Was OpenAI information actually stolen?
Nothing in the cited materials establishes that the devices captured intelligible audio, that anyone listened to a successful recording, or that information was removed from OpenAI. The complaint says the intended target could have included highly sensitive discussions, but an alleged attempt to intercept communications is different from proving that a recording worked or that trade secrets were exfiltrated.

The exact manufacturer and model of either device have not been identified publicly in the cited account. The encrypted contents of Device 1 also do not reveal, on the available facts, whether it contained usable recordings.

The DOJ says Alfozan made an initial federal-court appearance on October 13, 2026. A detention hearing was scheduled for October 19, 2026. The stated penalties are statutory maximums, not a prediction of the sentence he would receive if convicted.

FBI Director Kash Patel said: “According to the complaint unsealed today, Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer’s executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company’s super intelligence technology.” U.S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian said the office would continue protecting innovation developed in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.
What remains unresolved
- Alfozan’s motive has not been established.
- The cited materials do not show whether either device made a successful recording.
- There is no established proof that OpenAI information left the company.
- The device manufacturer, model and complete technical capabilities are not publicly identified in the cited account.
- The eventual court ruling and any sentence are unknown.
The FBI investigation is continuing. Until evidence is tested in court, the allegations describe a suspected attempt to intercept private workplace conversations, not a proven theft of OpenAI’s research or business information.
