Usually, no: most Windows users do not need Malwarebytes’ real-time protection running alongside another real-time antivirus. Windows 10 and 11 include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and Microsoft says a second real-time antivirus is not required by default. Malwarebytes Free has a different role: the company describes it as an on-demand cleanup tool for an existing infection. The right choice depends on whether you want a scanner to run when requested or a separate product providing ongoing protection.
What counts as antivirus in this question?
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows Security is the app where you can view protection status, run scans, and manage settings such as security intelligence updates and ransomware controls. Microsoft says compatible third-party antivirus software can automatically turn Defender Antivirus off, so installing another product does not necessarily mean both engines are providing full-time protection.
Microsoft recommends against running another antivirus or antispyware product at the same time as Defender. Multiple real-time products may affect performance or interfere with installation and updates. An on-demand scanner is different: it runs when you start or schedule a scan rather than continuously protecting the device. See Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ and its guide to virus and threat protection in Windows Security.
Malwarebytes Free and Premium Security do different jobs
| Product | Role described by Malwarebytes | What that means for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Malwarebytes Free | Cleanup tool for a device that has already been infected | Use it as an on-demand scan and cleanup option, rather than assuming it provides ongoing real-time protection. |
| Malwarebytes Premium Security | Ongoing protection; Malwarebytes lists real-time threat protection, ransomware defense, harmful-site defense, and malware cleanup | This is a real-time security product. If you use it, check which antivirus Windows reports as active and follow current compatibility guidance. |
These descriptions and feature claims come from Malwarebytes’ Windows product page; they are the vendor’s descriptions, not an independent head-to-head test. They do not establish that every Windows user needs the paid product.

Can Malwarebytes run with Microsoft Defender or another antivirus?
It depends on the Malwarebytes product and how Windows and the other security app handle the installation. A compatible third-party real-time antivirus may switch Microsoft Defender Antivirus off automatically. Do not assume both are active: open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and review the protection provider or status shown there.
Malwarebytes documents possible problems when it is installed alongside another antivirus, including one app being blocked, a security product malfunctioning, loss of internet connectivity, or a blue screen. Its help guidance suggests adding each product to the other’s allow-list where appropriate, but that is not a guarantee of conflict-free operation. The same guidance says an incompatible product may need to be uninstalled. Consult the current instructions from both vendors before changing exclusions or removing protection.

When should you use each option?
Keep the built-in protection
For a typical Windows 10 or 11 PC, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is already included and Microsoft says another real-time antivirus is not required by default. Keep Windows Security protection enabled and current if you are not choosing a different real-time product.

Use Malwarebytes Free for an on-demand check
If you want an additional scanner to run when you request it, Malwarebytes describes its Free product as a cleanup tool for existing infections. An on-demand scan does not replace the active real-time antivirus. Follow the scan results and remediation prompts rather than running two continuous antivirus engines by default.
Choose a third-party real-time product for a specific need
If you want features beyond your current setup, compare the actual feature scope, supported devices and operating systems, compatibility guidance, and current renewal and support terms. Malwarebytes lists web and ransomware protection among the features of Premium Security, but that alone does not show it is more effective than Defender. The cited official product pages do not provide an independent, current head-to-head efficacy test, so there is no basis here to rank the products by detection rate or declare one universally superior.

How to check protection and scan a Windows PC
- Check the active provider: Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security, then select Virus & threat protection. Review the displayed protection status and provider; labels can vary somewhat by Windows version.
- Run a scan: In Virus & threat protection, select Quick scan for a fast check. To choose another scan type, open Scan options; Windows offers a full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline scan as well.
- Use Offline scan when appropriate: Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the PC and scans in a separate recovery environment. Save your work first, then follow the Windows Security prompts.
- Update and reduce exposure: Keep Windows, browsers, apps, and security intelligence current, and download software from trusted sources. Windows Security also provides settings for cloud-delivered protection and ransomware controls, including Controlled folder access.
Microsoft explains the available protection controls in its Windows Security guide and recommends trusted downloads and current software in its advice on protecting a PC from unwanted software.
