Malware is software designed to harm a device, steal information, or gain access without permission. If you suspect malware, stop using the device for sensitive logins, update trusted security software, and run a scan; warning signs alone do not prove infection. The right removal steps depend on whether you use Windows, macOS, or a mobile device.

What is malware?

Malware is short for malicious software. It is a broad category that includes viruses, ransomware, spyware, worms, and Trojan horses. A Trojan may look like a legitimate file or app to persuade someone to open or install it. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) provides background on malware and its forms at CISA’s malware guidance.

How do I know if my device has malware?

Possible clues include sudden slowdowns, reduced battery life, unusual data use, unexpected pop-ups or browser redirects, repeated errors, disabled security tools, or messages sent from your accounts without your knowledge. None of these symptoms proves malware is present: hardware faults and ordinary software problems can cause similar behavior. Microsoft advises treating symptoms as reasons to investigate rather than a diagnosis in itself (Microsoft’s virus and threat guidance).

Be especially cautious of a browser pop-up claiming that your device is infected and urging you to call a number or download a cleaner. A warning in a webpage is not, by itself, evidence that the operating system detected malware. Do not use the pop-up’s link or phone number; close the page if possible and check with the device’s built-in security tools or a support provider you already trust.

What should I do first if I suspect malware?

  1. Stop sensitive logins on the suspected device. Do not use it for banking, shopping, email, or other accounts while you assess the issue. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says: “Immediately stop logging into online accounts with your usernames, passwords, or other sensitive information — like shopping or banking.” This is from its U.S. consumer guidance, “Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It,” dated April 2025.
  2. Protect accounts from a separate, known-clean device if compromise is plausible. Change passwords that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication. Start with email and other accounts that can be used to reset passwords elsewhere.
  3. Update trusted security software and scan. On Windows, Microsoft recommends a full scan when you believe the PC is infected rather than relying only on a quick scan. Use the platform-specific guidance below.
  4. Follow the security tool’s result. If it detects a threat, use its remove or quarantine option. Quarantine blocks the file from running; do not choose “allow” unless you have good reason to trust both the software and its publisher (Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance).
  5. Get trusted help if the problem continues. Contact the device maker or a support provider you know and trust. Avoid removal tools promoted through alarming pop-ups, unfamiliar ads, or unsolicited calls; the FTC recommends relying on a manufacturer or a company you know and trust.

How do I remove malware on Windows or Mac?

Windows and macOS include different built-in protections and scan options. Menu wording can change with operating-system and product updates, so use the current Windows Security or Apple guidance for your version rather than assuming every device has identical labels.

What to compare Windows Mac
Built-in protection Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus and scan options. macOS includes Gatekeeper and notarization to help prevent untrusted or known-malicious apps from running, plus XProtect to detect and remediate known malware. Features can vary by macOS version.
How the scan runs A full scan runs through Windows Security. Defender Offline is an option for persistent threats: the device restarts and scans without loading Windows, then restarts again when complete. Apple’s guidance describes built-in protections and handling a download identified as malware; it does not establish an equivalent separate-environment scan procedure.
If a file is identified as malware Follow Windows Security’s remove or quarantine instructions. Quarantine blocks the file from running; allowing it should be limited to software and publishers you trust. Do not open the flagged download. Move it to the Bin and empty the Bin, following Apple’s guidance for a malicious download.
When to seek support If scans cannot resolve the issue or symptoms persist, contact the device maker or a trusted support provider. If the warning or symptoms persist after following Apple’s instructions, contact Apple or a trusted support provider.

Windows: run a full scan, then consider Defender Offline

Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, and check for security-intelligence updates before scanning. Choose a full scan when you suspect infection; Microsoft notes that a quick scan is useful for routine checking, while a full scan is its recommendation for a suspected infection. Exact labels may vary by Windows version and updates. See Microsoft’s instructions for running a scan.

If a threat appears persistent or a normal scan cannot address it, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security’s scan options. It restarts the PC and scans without loading Windows, which can make persistent malware harder to hide. Save open work first because the scan requires a restart. Microsoft explains the option in its Windows malware guidance.

Mac: use macOS protections and handle flagged downloads carefully

Apple describes Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect as parts of macOS security. XProtect can detect and remove known malware; a paid scanner is not automatically required simply because you use a Mac. If Apple identifies a downloaded item as malware, do not open it: move it to the Bin and empty the Bin. Follow Apple’s current instructions for your macOS version (Apple support: malicious downloads; Apple Platform Security).

Phones and tablets: use the maker’s current instructions

Phones and tablets can also be affected by malicious software, but removal steps vary by mobile operating system and version. The guidance here does not establish a current, universal procedure for every mobile device. Consult the platform maker’s current support instructions rather than applying Windows scan steps to a phone or tablet.

What if ransomware is active?

Ransomware is a type of malware that can deny access to files or systems. If it is actively affecting a device, CISA recommends disconnecting that system from networks to help contain the incident. This is ransomware-specific guidance, not a blanket instruction to disconnect every device whenever you see a suspicious symptom. Get trusted technical help, and check backups before using them to restore files; a backup may need to be assessed before it is reconnected or restored (CISA’s ransomware guidance).

What should I do after malware or account compromise?

From a separate, known-clean device, change passwords that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication on important accounts. If you believe identity information was stolen, the FTC’s U.S. recovery resource is IdentityTheft.gov. Readers outside the United States should use the identity-theft reporting and recovery services available in their country.
