Makita’s four main pole-saw choices split across two battery platforms and two shaft styles: XAU01 and telescoping XAU02 use 18V X2 (36V) LXT batteries, while fixed GAU01 and telescoping GAU02 use 40V max XGT. Choose first by the batteries you already own, then by whether fixed or adjustable reach suits your pruning. Makita’s specifications and launch claims can inform that choice, but the available material does not establish an independent ranking or long-term durability comparison.
Which Makita pole saw fits your batteries and reach needs?
The XAU and GAU names are not interchangeable battery variants. XAU models belong to Makita’s 18V X2 (36V) LXT system; GAU models belong to the 40V max XGT system. Select the platform deliberately and check the exact product listing for the kit contents and regional availability.

Fixed shaft or telescoping pole?
Choose fixed reach when it matches the job
XAU01 and GAU01 are listed as 8-foot fixed models. A fixed shaft is the straightforward choice when the working reach is predictable and adjustable length is not important. The listed pole length is not a guarantee of safe working height: posture, cutting angle, branch position, and the saw’s manual all matter.

Choose telescoping reach when adjustment is useful
XAU02 is described by Makita as adjusting from 9 to 13 feet; GAU02 is listed as telescoping up to 13 feet. Adjustable reach can help adapt the tool to different branches, but it does not remove the need to keep the saw controlled and follow the model-specific safety instructions. A longer setting also changes handling; evaluate whether you can safely manage the tool at the needed extension.
What do Makita’s cutting claims establish?
In its March 16, 2021 launch announcement for the XAU pole saws, Makita reported up to 140 cuts in 4-by-4 cedar using two 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries. The same announcement claimed cutting speed 20% faster than a 31.4cc gas-engine pole saw. These are manufacturer-reported figures tied to Makita’s stated comparison and test conditions, not independent test results or a guarantee of output in other wood, battery, or operating conditions. Check kit contents before ordering
Makita listings include PTB kit and ZB bare-tool variants for the XAU models; the GAU search listings also include kit and tool-only versions. Do not assume that a model name alone tells you whether batteries or a charger are included. Inspect the exact suffix and current regional listing, and confirm the included items before checkout. Battery and charger availability can differ by region; the XAU02 manual lists compatible LXT cartridges and chargers and notes that availability varies. XAU02 instruction manual.

What chain and bar fit the XAU01 and XAU02?
Makita identifies a 10-inch bar for the XAU01 and XAU02 and lists the E-12734 guide bar as compatible with both. The catalog’s chain specification is 3/8-inch low-profile pitch, .050-inch gauge, and 40 drive links. Check the exact saw manual and the replacement part’s fitment before ordering; do not rely on bar length alone to establish chain compatibility.

Follow the instructions for the exact saw or attachment you use, as well as applicable local safety requirements. The EY401MP manual, which applies to that discontinued attachment, says it is approved only for listed Makita power units and approved attachments. It instructs users to keep at least 15 m (50 ft) from bystanders and electrical lines, including branches contacting them, and not to hold the attachment at an angle greater than 60 degrees. These specific directions should not be generalized to other models; consult their own manuals.
