Before replacing anything, write down the model number on the tool, the battery label, the charger model, and your country or region. “Compact” is not a battery platform: Makita’s CXT, LXT and XGT systems are separate, and batteries are intended to work within their own system. Match every check to the tool and charger manual for those exact numbers.
Then read the charger indicator before assuming the tool has failed. On the DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger, a red-and-green alternating light points more likely to a battery problem, but Makita says it is not conclusive proof that the charger is good. The sections below take you from identification and basic safety checks to service escalation without opening the tool or charger.
Start by identifying the exact Makita platform
Find the model number on the tool housing, battery label and charger nameplate. Record the voltage and any platform marking, such as CXT, LXT or XGT. Makita describes 18V LXT and 18V Compact products as designed for the LXT battery platform, while its compatibility guidance keeps batteries within their respective systems. A battery that fits physically is not automatically electrically compatible.
- Check the tool model in its instruction manual, not just the word “compact” in a listing or on packaging.
- Check the battery model and voltage printed on the battery.
- Check the charger model, because indicator codes and supported batteries differ among chargers.
- Note your country or region; manuals, service routes and available models can vary.
The BL1820B is one example, not a universal answer: it is an 18V LXT Compact 2.0Ah battery intended for 18V lithium-ion tools with Star Protection. Makita identifies compatible tools by a Star Symbol and/or a yellow battery receiver. Use it only when the manual for your tool confirms that LXT battery family and compatibility.

Read the charger light before changing parts
Indicator meanings belong to the charger model. The following codes are for Makita’s DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger; do not apply this pattern to every Makita charger.

A solid green light means the charger considers the battery full; it does not mean the tool itself is fault-free. Likewise, the 80% threshold describes what the DC18RC is displaying, not a general measurement of battery health.
“What do the lights mean on my charger?”
Use the light table in the manual supplied for your charger. If the model is not DC18RC, find its exact manual before interpreting a color or flash sequence. Makita’s DC18SF, for example, is an 18V LXT four-port charger whose indicators show charge progress and status while the charger monitors each battery’s current, voltage and temperature. That establishes how the charger operates; it does not establish compatibility with every compact tool or battery.

“If the Rapid Optimum Charger is flashing ‘red – green’ is it definitely the battery or could it possibly be the charger?”
For the DC18RC, alternating red and green is identified as a defective-battery condition. Makita’s U.S. FAQ says, “Most likely the problem will be the battery in this scenario.” “Most likely” matters: the light is not a guarantee that the charger cannot be at fault. Confirm the battery and charger models, repeat the ordinary power and temperature checks, and contact Makita service or its call center if the indication remains.
Run the basic charging checks
1. Confirm the AC supply
Use the AC voltage specified on the charger nameplate and connect it to a known-good outlet. If the charger has no indicator at all, test the outlet with another suitable device and check the plug and cord for visible damage. Do not pull the cord to unplug; grip the plug.
2. Keep the charger vents clear
Place the charger where air can circulate and make sure nothing covers or clogs its vents. Do not charge around flammable liquids or gases. A cooling fault or obstructed airflow can prevent normal charging even when the battery itself is usable.

3. Bring the battery into the permitted temperature range
The cited DC18RC/DC18RA manual says charging may not start when battery temperature is below 0°C (32°F). It also says not to charge when room temperature is below 10°C (50°F) or above 40°C (104°F). Move a cold or hot battery to a safe indoor temperature, allow it to stabilize, and retry according to the manual. These limits belong to that charger manual; verify the limits for your own model.
4. Reseat the battery
Remove the battery, inspect the housing and contacts for dirt, moisture or damage, and slide it back in until it locks. Do not force a battery into a charger or tool. If the charger immediately returns the same fault light, stop cycling it repeatedly and proceed with model-specific troubleshooting.
5. Check for physical damage
Do not use a cracked, swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged battery, charger or tool. Makita’s charger instructions warn against use or disassembly after damage and direct repair to qualified service. A consumer troubleshooting check should never include opening the charger, bypassing a safety device or dismantling the tool.

When the tool runs briefly, stops or loses power
Makita’s guidance is to stop when the tool’s performance diminishes—when it slows down and is no longer useful—and charge the battery. Continuing to discharge below the point at which it can power the tool may damage the battery and reduce both runtime and cycle life.
Distinguish a low charge from a persistent fault
- If the tool slows after normal use and the charger reports an ordinary charging cycle, recharge it and let the charger finish.
- If the tool stops immediately with a charged battery, verify that the battery belongs to the tool’s platform and that it is fully latched.
- If the same battery repeatedly shows a DC18RC alternating red-and-green indication, treat the battery as the leading suspect, but obtain service confirmation rather than declaring the charger good.
- If multiple known-compatible batteries produce the same charger fault, record the results and have the charger and batteries evaluated together.
Do not infer battery failure merely because a tool has reduced runtime once. Runtime depends on the tool’s load and the battery’s condition. The manufacturer’s instruction to recharge at the first noticeable performance decline is the safer boundary than repeatedly running the pack until the tool can no longer move.

New batteries and “conditioning”
Makita says a new battery does not need a special break-in procedure. Its recommendation is to charge a brand-new battery fully before using it. The DC18RC communicates with a compatible battery and enters maintenance mode once charging is complete. A solid yellow conditioning indication on that charger is an indicator state defined by the charger; it is not a reason to apply an improvised discharge-and-recharge routine.

Decide whether a replacement is appropriate
Replacement should follow compatibility and diagnosis, not the word “compact” alone.
Battery replacement
A battery such as the BL1820B 18V LXT Compact 2.0Ah is a possible replacement only when your tool documentation confirms 18V LXT compatibility and the required Star Protection arrangement. Confirm the exact battery model listed for the tool, the receiver marking and the charger’s supported batteries before buying. Do not substitute a CXT or XGT pack because its voltage or shape appears similar.
Charger replacement
The DC18RC is an LXT charger for supported 18V LXT batteries. Buying one before isolating the fault can leave you with a second incompatible component. If your setup uses a different charger, use that model’s manual and supported-battery list. The DC18SF four-port charger may be useful for an LXT setup that specifically supports it, but its four ports do not make it a universal replacement.
Service instead of parts
Choose service when the tool, battery or charger is damaged; when the indicator remains abnormal after power and temperature checks; or when compatibility cannot be established. A qualified technician can test the battery and charger as a system without exposing you to mains voltage or lithium-ion battery hazards.
Use the model number to get the right manual and parts information
- Search the exact tool or charger model on Makita’s website.
- Open the product details and the Resources & Media area.
- Download the instruction manual and, where available, the parts breakdown.
- Use the manual’s battery and charger list, indicator definitions and temperature instructions for the next check.
- If the document is unavailable or the fault remains, use Makita’s U.S. National Call Center or service-center locator.
Those support routes are U.S.-specific. Outside the United States, use the Makita organization serving your country and provide all four model numbers and the exact light pattern. Include whether the problem occurs with one battery or several, the outlet and temperature conditions, and any visible damage.
Safety limits that should end home troubleshooting
- Stop if a battery is swollen, leaking, cracked, unusually hot or smells abnormal.
- Stop if the charger cord, plug or housing is damaged.
- Do not cover charger vents or charge near flammable liquids or gases.
- Do not open, modify or bypass the charger, battery or tool.
- Do not keep forcing charge attempts after a repeated fault indication.
At that point, disconnect the charger safely and arrange qualified Makita service. Keeping the model information and indicator behavior together helps the service center identify the correct platform and component without guesswork.
