Zotero can keep a review queue visible, but the documented features described here do not establish a built-in scheduled alert that tells you when an item is due. The practical workaround is to tag items that need another look, save a search for that tag, and open the search during a recurring work session. The search updates as matching items are added; it does not send a notification by itself.
What this setup does—and what it does not
A tag and saved search create a persistent, automatically updating list inside your Zotero library. You decide which items belong in it, and you need a separate habit or verified calendar/task mechanism to prompt you to check it. Zotero’s documentation on collections and tags and its guide to saved searches describe organizing and surfacing items, not a scheduled review-date notification.
That distinction matters: a saved search is a queue, not a due-date system. The documentation reviewed does not establish a native feature that sends a scheduled review reminder. This is a bounded statement about those documented features, not a claim about every plugin, integration, or future Zotero version.
Build a review queue with tags and a saved search
1. Choose a small tag scheme
Start with one tag, such as review, for anything you want to revisit. If useful, add a second tag for a reason or cadence—for example, check-methods or quarterly. These are examples for your own workflow, not prescribed Zotero tags. Keep the scheme small enough that you can apply it consistently.

2. Tag the library item you want to revisit
Apply the tag to the regular Zotero item representing the source, rather than relying only on a loose attachment file when bibliographic metadata and other item features matter. Zotero distinguishes regular library items, which carry bibliographic metadata, from attachments and notes, which serve different roles.
3. Create and save an Advanced Search
Use Zotero’s Advanced Search to set a criterion for the tag you chose, then save the search. The saved search retains its criteria and updates automatically when additional items match. New items you tag with review can therefore appear in the same queue without rebuilding it.
4. Add the reason for the review
Put a short note with the item describing what to reconsider: a method to verify, a claim to compare with newer evidence, or the reason the source remains important. Zotero supports notes attached to items as well as standalone notes, and notes can be tagged. Keeping the question alongside the bibliographic record makes the queue more actionable than a bare list of titles.
5. Give the queue a prompt
Choose a recurring work session—such as a weekly literature-review block—and open the saved search then. If you need an actual due-date alert, use a separate calendar or task mechanism that you have verified for that purpose; the saved search alone will not notify you. A queue only works as a reminder when you both tag items reliably and regularly return to it.

Can Zotero set due dates for articles?
The documented workflow supports tags, saved searches, and notes for organizing items and review context. It does not establish a native scheduled due-date notification for articles. If assigning a date is essential, track the date in a separately verified calendar or task system, and use Zotero’s saved search to keep the relevant sources grouped in the library.
Quick Recap
Keep the system dependable
- Use the same review tag for every item that should enter the queue.
- Write the next question in a note so you know why the item is there when you reopen it.
- Open the saved search on a recurring schedule; its automatic updating does not create an alert.
- Keep any date-based prompt in a separate mechanism unless you have confirmed that a specific Zotero feature or integration provides it.
