You can make sure your iPhone’s built-in speaker is not being held below its available maximum by a setting. But iPhone settings do not raise the speaker’s hardware ceiling. If it is already at its available maximum, send audio to a Bluetooth speaker for louder room playback.

Turn up the audio that is playing

  1. Start playing the audio you want to hear.

  2. Press the iPhone’s side volume-up button, or open Control Center and drag the volume slider upward. The side buttons adjust playback volume while media is playing; their behavior for alerts can differ when nothing is playing. Apple’s volume guidance explains the controls.

Check the built-in speaker’s limits

Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and look under Built-In Speaker. Review Volume Limit, which can cap the speaker’s maximum, and Reduce Loud Sounds, which softens loud speaker sounds. The available labels and path can vary by iOS version or region. A limit managed through Screen Time by a family organizer may not be editable by you. See Apple’s iPhone volume settings guide.

If only Apple Music sounds quiet

Go to Settings > Apps > Music and review Sound Check and EQ. Sound Check normalizes loudness between songs; Apple describes it this way: “Sound Check adjusts the loudness between different songs to play them at the same volume.” Some recordings may consequently seem quieter than others, including stereo and Dolby Atmos versions. Turning Sound Check off can restore differences between tracks, but does not guarantee every song will play louder.

EQ changes the tonal balance of music in the Music app. It is not a system-wide control or a reliable way to push all iPhone audio beyond the built-in speaker’s normal maximum. For details, see Apple’s guidance for quiet audio in Apple Music.

For louder room playback, use a Bluetooth speaker

A Bluetooth speaker moves playback to an external device; it does not boost the iPhone’s built-in speaker. Apple’s guidance notes: “After you connect your iPhone to a Bluetooth accessory, you can play and control the audio from your iPhone on the accessory.”

  1. Put the Bluetooth speaker in pairing or discovery mode.
