If your headphones sound too bass-heavy, thin, or sharp, an equalizer may help you change their tonal balance without buying another pair. The Android app most closely associated with that approach is Wavelet: headphone equalizer. It offers headphone-specific AutoEq profiles and manual controls, but it cannot repair damaged headphones or guarantee that its adjustments will suit your taste. Whether it works also depends on your phone, audio app, and listening route.
What Wavelet changes—and what it does not
An equalizer changes the relative level of parts of the frequency range. That can make bass more prominent, reduce an aggressive treble range, or otherwise shift a headphone’s tonal balance. Wavelet’s Google Play listing describes it as a system-wide Android equalizer and lists headphone AutoEq profiles, a graphic equalizer, limiter, channel balance, virtualizer, and reverberation. The listing says root access is not required: Wavelet on Google Play.
That is a way to adjust the sound of headphones you already own, not proof that the headphones were the source of every listening problem. EQ will not fix a damaged driver, a poor physical fit, a faulty cable, or a recording that itself sounds wrong. The result is also subjective: a profile or boost that one listener likes may not be another listener’s preference.
Choose between an AutoEq profile and manual EQ
Start with the exact headphone model
Wavelet’s feature guide says its AutoEq section includes more than 5,000 headphone entries, with precalculated frequency-response compensation for specific models. This is Wavelet’s documented count, not an independently audited inventory. If your exact model is available, its profile is the most specific starting point. A similar model name or product family is not a guarantee of a matching tuning.

Wavelet says the included data comes from AutoEq; a headphone cannot have an included profile if none of the sources measured it. If your model is missing, that does not show that the headphones are defective. Wavelet’s documentation says custom compensation data can be imported when a suitable measurement is available. Use the graphic EQ when a profile is absent or you want a different sound
Wavelet’s graphic EQ has nine bands. It is the alternative when there is no exact-model profile or when you want to depart from the profile’s sound. Make small adjustments, listen to familiar tracks, and change one part of the range at a time; large boosts can make the output sound unnatural or introduce distortion if there is not enough headroom.

Check compatibility before judging the sound
“System-wide” is a useful description, not a guarantee that every audio stream and route will expose every feature. Android effects may be attached to a particular player session: Android’s Equalizer API describes an effect that can alter the response of a particular music source or the main output mix. The API also notes that attaching an effect to the global output mix through session 0 is deprecated. A player’s audio-session behavior can therefore affect whether an effect is available. Wavelet displays features dynamically: AutoEq appears when headphones are connected, and the app can save or restore configurations based on device type or name. For setup details, consult Wavelet’s feature guide and Wavelet’s settings documentation.
Compare the change fairly
To find out whether EQ helps your own setup, keep the headphones, track, playback app, and connection route the same. Compare the stock sound with the exact-model AutoEq profile, then try a restrained manual adjustment if needed. Match perceived loudness as closely as practical: a louder version can seem better even when the tonal change itself is not. Check that Wavelet shows the expected device or profile and that the adjustment remains active during playback.

No controls appear for a player
Wavelet says its ordinary mode can show no features if a player does not notify Android when playback is active. Its documentation describes legacy mode as a possible workaround, depending on the manufacturer’s audio framework. It also documents experimental enhanced session detection for Android 10 and later, which requires additional permission setup. These options can behave differently by device; follow the current Wavelet troubleshooting guide rather than assuming the app will work with every player.

Bluetooth, DAC, or sample-rate problems
For a Bluetooth problem in legacy mode, Wavelet’s guide suggests disabling “Disable Bluetooth A2DP hardware offload” in Android developer options. For some Bluetooth or DAC sample-rate issues, it suggests trying 48 kHz and/or SBC. These are device-specific troubleshooting suggestions, not universal settings: changing them can affect audio behavior elsewhere, so note the original setting and revert if the result worsens.
Clipping, competing effects, or an app that stops
Wavelet describes its attenuator as the first digital signal-processing stage. Automatic attenuation calculates the highest combined feature gain to reduce the risk of exceeding the digital limit and causing clipping or distortion. That is not a guarantee against clipping in every device or audio path. If you hear harsh distortion after boosting, reduce the boosts or lower the overall level.
The troubleshooting guide says some Samsung devices may clip with the UHQ upscaler enabled and suggests changing it to “Bit upscaling only.” It also warns that other equalizer or hearing-aid apps can conflict. If Wavelet stops running, the guide identifies manufacturer battery restrictions as one possible cause; that alone does not establish an app defect. Consult the device-specific guidance before changing system settings.

When EQ is—and is not—the next step
Wavelet is worth considering if you want to experiment with the tonal balance of headphones you already own and your phone’s playback path supports the effect. If your exact model is missing, manual EQ is available, but it is a less specific route than an exact-model profile. If the effect is absent, check the player and connection route before deciding that a sound adjustment did not help.
The available documentation supports trying software adjustments; it does not establish that you need a new headphone, adapter, DAC, or hardware equalizer. Consider different hardware only if you have identified a separate need that EQ cannot address, such as physical damage, fit, or a preference you cannot achieve with the available controls.
