To get a genuinely clear Windows 11 taskbar, install TranslucentTB, open its taskbar appearance controls, and select Clear. The project defines Clear as a fully transparent taskbar, unlike Windows 11’s built-in Transparency effects, which Microsoft describes as slight transparency with an acrylic blur.
Download TranslucentTB only from its official GitHub repository or its Microsoft Store listing. Store availability, release versions and menu labels can change, so use the current listing shown by the project when you install it.
What TranslucentTB’s Clear mode actually does
TranslucentTB is a lightweight taskbar-appearance utility for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its project description says it makes the taskbar “translucent/transparent,” while its configuration documentation distinguishes several appearance accents. The clear accent means the taskbar is fully transparent, allowing the desktop wallpaper behind it to show through.

Clear is easy to confuse with the project’s other accents. Blur and Acrylic deliberately soften what is behind the taskbar, and an opaque appearance hides the wallpaper. If the result looks frosted or hazy, you have not selected the fully clear mode.
Windows 11 also has a built-in Transparency effects switch. Microsoft describes that feature as slight transparency with an acrylic blur, so it is not the same visual result as TranslucentTB’s taskbar-specific Clear accent. The distinction is documented in the TranslucentTB configuration guide and Microsoft’s color-personalization help.
Choose the right distribution before installing
The project provides two practical ways to obtain the utility. Use the option that matches how you want to maintain it:

Do not use an unrelated download portal or a repackaged installer. Start at the project’s official repository, then follow its Microsoft Store link or its current releases link. Check the release information shown there before downloading because packages and supported builds are updated over time.
Install and launch TranslucentTB
Method 1: Microsoft Store
- Open the official TranslucentTB repository and follow its Microsoft Store link.
- In the Store, verify that the publisher and application name match the project you intended to install. Select the current install button.
- Wait for Windows to finish installing the app, then select Open. If the Store does not offer the app in your region, use the project’s official release route instead.
- After launch, look for the TranslucentTB icon in the notification area at the right side of the taskbar. Windows may place it inside the hidden-icons panel, which you can open with the small up-arrow.
The Store route is the easier choice if you want the project’s stated background auto-update capability. It does not guarantee that every future interface label will remain identical, so rely on the current menu presented by your installed version.
Method 2: Portable Windows 11 release
- From the official repository, open the project’s current GitHub releases page and download the portable package offered for Windows 11.
- Extract the archive to a folder you control, such as a dedicated applications folder. Keep the extracted files together; a portable application normally expects its supporting files beside its executable.
- Run the TranslucentTB executable. Windows may display a security confirmation for a file downloaded from the internet; only proceed when the file came from the project’s official release page.
- Confirm that its icon appears in the notification area. The portable package is described by the project as Windows 11 only, so do not select it for a Windows 10 computer.
A portable installation does not automatically provide the same Store-managed update path. Revisit the official releases page periodically and replace the portable files only with a newer package published there.

Enable the fully clear taskbar
TranslucentTB’s exact menu wording can vary between application versions, so the safest procedure is to use the tray icon and look for the taskbar appearance or accent controls rather than rely on a fixed screenshot.
- Launch TranslucentTB and open its notification-area menu. If you do not see the icon, expand the hidden-icons panel first.
- Open the section that controls the taskbar’s appearance, accent or visual style.
- Select Clear. The configuration guide identifies this accent as fully transparent.
- Move an open window or choose a wallpaper with a strong color contrast behind the taskbar. The wallpaper should now be visible through the taskbar instead of appearing behind a gray, colored or frosted layer.
- Close the menu. The setting should apply immediately; if the taskbar does not change, use the troubleshooting checks below before changing unrelated Windows settings.
Do not choose Blur or Acrylic when your goal is a clear taskbar. Those accents intentionally retain a softened background effect. If your version presents a context menu with separate desktop, maximized-window or other state-specific appearances, inspect each state and set it to Clear if you want the same result while windows are maximized or minimized.
Clear versus Blur, Acrylic and opaque appearances
The names describe different rendering goals, not levels of the same slider:

The configuration guide is the authority for the names and their meanings. If your installed build exposes fewer choices or uses slightly different labels, select the option explicitly described as Clear or fully transparent.
Why Windows’ own Transparency effects are not enough
Windows 11 includes a built-in control at Settings > Personalization > Colors > Transparency effects. Turning it on can make parts of the Windows interface appear slightly translucent, but Microsoft describes the result as slight transparency with acrylic blur. It is a system visual effect, not the dedicated fully clear taskbar accent documented for TranslucentTB.

You can leave Windows Transparency effects enabled while using TranslucentTB, but do not interpret the Windows switch as proof that Clear mode is active. The taskbar-specific selection still has to be set inside TranslucentTB.

Make the setting survive normal daily use
Store installation
The project says its Store version can take advantage of background auto-updates. That reduces the need to download every update manually, although you should still check the current app version if the appearance changes after a Windows or application update.
Portable installation
With the portable package, update maintenance is manual: return to the official GitHub releases page, compare the current release with the files you have, and replace the package only from that official source. The project’s description establishes the distribution method but does not prescribe one universal startup switch for every build.
Starting with Windows
If your installed version exposes a Start with Windows, Launch at startup or similarly named option in its own menu, enable it there and then sign out or restart once to verify the behavior. Menu labels may differ by version. If no such option is present, launch the application manually after sign-in rather than following a fixed path that your build does not display.
Troubleshoot a taskbar that is not fully clear
The taskbar is still blurred
- Open the TranslucentTB tray menu and confirm that the selected accent is Clear, not Blur or Acrylic.
- Check each appearance state offered by your version. A maximized-window or other state-specific profile may be using a different accent.
- Close and relaunch TranslucentTB after changing the accent. This is a simple way to reload the application’s current configuration.
There is no TranslucentTB icon
- Open the hidden-icons panel in the notification area.
- Use Windows Search to launch TranslucentTB again if it is not running.
- For a portable installation, run the executable from the folder where you extracted the official package; moving only the executable can leave its supporting files behind.
The taskbar does not change at all
- Verify that the utility is running and that you selected Clear in its own appearance controls, not only Windows’ Transparency effects switch.
- Confirm the operating-system requirement. The project describes the main utility as supporting Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the portable package is specifically described as Windows 11 only.
- Quit and relaunch the utility. If the problem began after an update, compare your installed version with the current official Store listing or GitHub release.
The appearance keeps reverting
First determine whether the utility is closing after sign-in or whether another taskbar-customization program is applying a competing style. Run only one taskbar appearance customizer while testing, then use the current TranslucentTB menu to enable its available startup option, if present. If the issue persists, reinstall from the official Store listing or replace the portable files with the current official release.
Return to the normal Windows taskbar
To undo the effect temporarily, open TranslucentTB’s tray menu and choose its default or opaque appearance, or exit the utility. The Windows taskbar then returns to the style supplied by Windows and any active built-in transparency setting.
To remove the Store installation, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find TranslucentTB, open its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall. For the portable edition, exit the application and delete the folder containing the extracted package. If you enabled a startup entry inside the application, disable it before deleting the portable files.
Which method should you use?
- Choose TranslucentTB Clear when the specific goal is a taskbar that is fully transparent and shows the wallpaper directly.
- Choose Windows Transparency effects when you want a built-in, system-wide visual treatment and slight acrylic blur is acceptable.
- Choose the Store distribution when you prefer Windows-managed installation and the project’s stated background auto-update capability.
- Choose the portable release when you want a self-contained Windows 11 package and are willing to handle updates yourself.
The decisive setting is the accent named Clear inside TranslucentTB. Windows’ own transparency toggle can complement that setup, but it does not replace the taskbar-specific Clear mode.
