To make photo prints look closer to your screen, profile the display, soft-proof with the ICC profile for the exact printer-and-paper combination, use only one color-management route, and compare the result under suitable light. A perfect match is impossible: a screen emits light, while a print reflects it, and their brightness and color ranges differ. The print also changes appearance with its illumination.
Why a print looks different from the screen
Your monitor creates an image with emitted light; a print depends on light reflecting from paper and ink. A screen may show brighter or more saturated colors than the printer and paper can reproduce. The room or display lighting can also change how the print appears. Adobe explains these limits in its print-preparation guidance.
That is why the goal is a predictable, close match—not identical appearance. For a reliable comparison, the display needs a known profile, the print needs the right output profile, and both should be viewed in appropriate, steady light.

Set up the display before editing
Calibration adjusts a display toward a target; profiling measures and records its behavior so color-managed software can translate image colors. The International Color Consortium (ICC) describes display profiling as a measurement-based process that typically uses an instrument and calibration software. A colorimeter can help make profiling repeatable, but it cannot correct an unsuitable printer profile or lighting conditions.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Turn off automatic brightness, night modes, and other features that change display color or brightness while you edit.
- Position the screen in its normal working environment and reduce glare. Keep brightness and display controls consistent after profiling.
- When accurate print matching matters, calibrate and profile with a measurement device and compatible software. Display behavior can drift; the ICC says recalibration frequency depends on display technology, luminance, and accuracy needs. It notes that approximately six-month intervals are often sufficient, not a universal schedule.
Laptop displays may vary in brightness and uniformity, so maintaining the same settings and working conditions is particularly important. For detailed context, see the ICC display-calibration guidance.
Choose the correct printer-and-paper profile
An ICC output profile describes a particular printing condition. Use the profile made for your printer and the paper you will actually use; paper type affects gamut, brightness, and appearance. A profile for another paper or printer is not an equivalent substitute. Adobe’s Photoshop color-management documentation, updated October 4, 2026, explains that accurate output translation depends on how well the profile describes the device and printing conditions.

If you use specialty photographic paper, check that it is compatible with your printer and has a matching profile. Also confirm that the printer driver’s media type is set to the corresponding paper. No paper surface is best for every image or display situation: consider gloss, luster or semi-gloss, and matte according to the intended look and viewing use, while ensuring a matching profile is available.

Soft proofing simulates how an image may look when printed through a chosen output profile. In Photoshop, choose the profile for the specific printer and paper as the simulated device. Where available, enable paper-white and ink-black simulation, and inspect gamut warnings to identify colors the print may not reproduce as shown on screen.

- Check the image’s embedded or source profile in your editing application.
- Open the application’s soft-proof settings and select the printer-and-paper output profile.
- Enable paper-white and ink-black simulation when available, then inspect any gamut warnings.
- Make restrained adjustments while viewing the proof, and preserve the original image.
A proof often appears less bright or saturated than the unproofed image. That can be expected: paper cannot emit light like a display, and the selected output condition may not reproduce every screen color.
Pick one color-management route at print time
Color conversion should be handled either by the photo application or by the printer driver—not both. Driver labels differ by printer, operating system, and software version, so follow the controls available for your specific setup.

| Route | What to select | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Application-managed color | In the photo application, select the same printer-and-paper ICC profile used for soft proofing. In the driver, turn off its color adjustment and set the media type to match the paper. | Do not leave driver color correction enabled as well as application conversion. |
| Printer-managed color | Enable the printer driver’s color management and select the appropriate media setting for the paper. | Do not also ask the application to convert to a printer profile. |
Application-managed output is useful when the correct output profile is available and the application supports soft proofing. Printer-managed output can be simpler when relying on the driver’s own color controls. In either case, the important checks are that the chosen route is clear, the media setting matches the paper, and conversion is not applied twice. Epson’s Windows color-management instructions for the SC-P900 and SC-P700 illustrate driver controls for those models; their labels and workflow are not universal.
Compare the print under appropriate light
Let the print dry or stabilize as directed by the paper and printer instructions. Then place it beside the monitor and inspect it under steady light appropriate to where the print will be displayed. Minimize reflections on the screen. A monitor profile cannot make a print look the same under very different lighting, so avoid judging it under changing or unsuitable light.

Some manufacturers publish specific matching targets. For its Professional Print & Layout workflow, Canon’s 2020 guide recommends a monitor at D50 (5000 K), 120 cd/m², and gamma 2.2, plus D50 evaluation lighting at 500 lx ± 125 lx. It also recommends Adobe RGB with ICC Profile / Perceptual and sRGB with Driver Matching / Perceptual (Photo). These are Canon product-specific recommendations, not universal settings; see the Canon Professional Print & Layout guide.
The ICC gives D50 white point and 160 cd/m² as soft-proof calibration guidance for graphic arts, and separately presents an Adobe RGB reference example using D65, 160 cd/m², and gamma 2.2. These examples serve different stated contexts and should not be combined into one general target. For an ordinary workflow, follow the guidance for your software and printer, and account for the conditions in which the print will be viewed.
What to check when the print still looks wrong
- The print is too dark: Check whether the monitor is excessively bright, whether automatic brightness or a night mode is changing its behavior, and whether the print is being judged under suitable light. Recheck the display profile and keep the display settings consistent with it.
- Colors look unexpectedly dull or shifted: Confirm that the soft-proof and print profiles match the actual printer and paper. Check the driver media type and make sure only one color-management route is active.
- The preview looks worse than the original: A less bright or saturated soft proof can reflect the printer-and-paper limits. Use the proof to make measured adjustments rather than trying to force the print to reproduce colors it cannot produce.
- One print matches and another does not: Recheck that the same paper, media setting, profile, and color-management route were used, and compare both prints under consistent light.
Before making further image edits, verify the profile, media selection, and conversion path. Change only what those checks show to be wrong; otherwise, adjustments made to compensate for a setup error can create a new mismatch.
