A black rectangle drawn on a PDF usually covers the page visually; it does not remove the characters underneath. Anyone who can select, search, copy, or extract the file’s text may still recover what the rectangle hides. The fix is to use a dedicated redaction command, apply it, sanitize hidden data, and inspect the exported file—not merely draw over the page.
Why a black box is not a redaction
PDF pages are built from separate objects: text glyphs, images, paths, annotations, form fields, and sometimes hidden layers. A rectangle made with a pencil, drawing, or annotation tool is commonly just another object painted above those objects. It changes the appearance of the page while leaving the original text in the document structure.
That distinction was illustrated by a Mozilla Bugzilla report in which a reporter said Firefox’s pencil drawing left the covered text extractable. Mozilla’s security team later noted that the feature was labeled “draw” and did not regard the report as a realistic security vulnerability. The report and response document that particular workflow; they are not a finding about every Firefox release or every PDF editor. Read the Mozilla report and response.

Even when those quick tests fail, you still need to check images, metadata, attachments, scripts, comments, and other non-visible objects.

“If you are trying to remove content from a PDF, it’s essential that you understand the difference between ‘hiding’ and ‘removing’ content.” — PDF Association staff, February 24, 2026. PDF Association guidance
The safe client-side workflow
Use this sequence whether you are working in a desktop editor or building a browser application. “Client-side” describes where code runs; it does not, by itself, prove that bytes never leave the device or that a tool performs secure redaction.
- Preserve the original. Make an untouched, access-controlled copy of the source PDF. Perform all edits on a working copy so that you can recover if a page is damaged or a redaction is applied to the wrong content.
- Inventory what must disappear. List names, addresses, account numbers, signatures, images, annotations, and entire pages that are in scope. Searchable text is only part of the inventory. Scanned pages, handwriting, diagrams, and text embedded in images require a visual page-by-page check because a text search cannot see pixels.
- Use the dedicated redact command. Do not select a rectangle, highlight, freehand mark, or ordinary annotation. A real redaction tool first marks the target and then runs an operation that removes the selected page content. In Adobe Acrobat’s documented desktop path, choose All tools > Redact a PDF, mark text or images (or search for text and patterns), and then choose Apply. The tutorial states that this interface is available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio; product names and tiers can change, so confirm the current edition before relying on these steps. Adobe’s redaction tutorial
- Apply, rather than merely preview. A black appearance in a marking layer or preview is not proof that the underlying objects have been removed. Finish the application step and wait for the editor to create the redacted document.
- Sanitize hidden information. Run the application’s separate remove-hidden-information or sanitize command after visible redactions. Adobe describes sanitization as removing metadata, embedded content, scripts, and other non-visible elements that may contain sensitive information or security risks. Redaction of visible text and graphics does not automatically clean comments, document properties, attachments, hidden layers, or scripts. Adobe’s redacting and sanitizing explanation
- Export a new file. Save the result under a new filename and retain the untouched original separately. Do not overwrite the only source copy. If your software offers a “save as optimized” or flattened output, understand what it changes before using it; flattening alone is not a substitute for the redact and sanitize operations.
- Reopen the exported artifact independently. Close the editor, open the new file again, and test the actual file you intend to send. Search for each redacted term, try selecting and copying the affected area, and run a text extractor if your workflow handles high-risk information. Inspect every page visually for missed text, duplicated content, accidentally removed material, or visible remnants of an image. Review document properties and attachments when those could carry confidential data.
These checks increase assurance but do not establish that a file contains no possible side channel. Keep the inspection record with the output when the document is part of a regulated or legal process.
Redaction and sanitization solve different problems
Redaction targets content that a reader can see on a page: words, graphics, or a complete page region. Sanitization targets information that may not be visible during ordinary reading. Treat them as two distinct controls.

| Control | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated redaction and apply operation | Removes selected visible text or graphics from the page content, according to the editor’s implementation. | It does not automatically prove that metadata, comments, attachments, scripts, hidden layers, or alternate objects are gone. |
| Sanitize/remove hidden information | Removes supported non-visible data such as metadata, embedded content, and scripts. | It does not replace careful selection of visible content or visual review of every page. |
| Output inspection | Checks the exact file that will be shared for searchable text, selectable remnants, visual mistakes, and unexpected properties. | A short manual test cannot prove that every implementation-specific leak is impossible. |
Adobe’s official help page explicitly separates these controls and was last updated September 23, 2025. Its labels and behavior may change in later releases, but the underlying principle remains: removing what is visible and cleaning what is hidden are separate jobs.
What “client-side” really tells you
A browser application may parse and modify a PDF in JavaScript or WebAssembly on the user’s device, but that phrase says nothing by itself about the quality of the redaction or the file’s network path. A product can run most processing locally and still contact a server for licensing, fonts, telemetry, conversion, updates, or cloud services.
Adobe’s security documentation distinguishes its PDF Embed API, described as client-side JavaScript/WebAssembly with specified cloud calls, from its separate PDF Services API, which uploads user-generated content and temporarily caches it. That distinction is why you should read the implementation and data-flow documentation for the exact product and version you deploy. Adobe Document Services security documentation

Choosing a desktop editor or a browser SDK
The right route depends on whether you need an operator to redact a few documents or need to embed the operation in an application. Compare the implementation details rather than assuming that a familiar interface or a “local” label guarantees removal.
| Option | Best fit | Verify before use | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop PDF editor with redact and sanitize commands | Teams that need a guided interface, search/pattern marking, page-level redaction, and an operator review. | Edition availability, supported content types, sanitize coverage, export behavior, and whether the final file can be independently inspected. | Adobe documents mark/apply redaction and a separate sanitize step; the cited tutorial limits the interface to named paid tiers. This is documentation, not a comparative hands-on test. |
| Browser-based editor or developer SDK | Products that must process documents inside a web workflow or automate repetitive operations. | Local-versus-server data flow, actual object removal, scanned-image handling, hidden-data cleanup, version support, and automated output validation. | SDK documentation can describe an API but does not by itself prove that your configuration is secure or that every PDF structure is handled correctly. |
For either path, run representative files through the same acceptance tests: searchable text is absent, copied text is absent, pages look correct, hidden information is cleaned where required, and no unintended network transfer occurs. Do not rank products on the evidence above; no hands-on comparative test is established here.
Why removal can still leak information
Deleting the obvious text layer is necessary but not always sufficient. The 2022 paper Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction assessed 11 popular PDF redaction tools. It reported that two tools left marked text in place, while other tools removed the text but retained glyph-position information that could reveal clues about the redacted content. The authors reported that a typical Microsoft Word-authored PDF leaked about 13 bits of information about a redacted surname—enough, in their study scenario, to identify one person among 8,000 candidates. Those numbers describe that paper’s files, assumptions, and analysis; they are not a universal risk estimate for every PDF. Read the 2022 study.

The same study found that rasterizing a document increased redaction security but did not eliminate every information leak. Rasterization also turns selectable text into pixels, can enlarge files, reduces accessibility and searchability, and may degrade quality. Consider it a risk-based fallback for especially sensitive workflows, not an automatic replacement for proper redaction, sanitization, and inspection.

The black area can be moved or deleted
That behavior indicates an annotation or drawing layer. Remove it, reopen the original working copy, and mark the content with the dedicated redact command. Do not send the file merely because the page looks covered.
Search still finds a supposedly redacted word
The underlying text remains, or another occurrence was missed. Return to the working copy, search for variants and repeated occurrences, apply the redactions, sanitize, and retest the newly exported file.
The document is a scan and search finds nothing
Search cannot detect pixels. Zoom through every page, including margins and image-only attachments, and mark sensitive regions visually. If optical character recognition is used, review its results against the page; OCR can miss handwriting, unusual fonts, or low-resolution text.

Text is gone but confidential details remain
Inspect images, comments, form fields, attachments, document properties, embedded files, scripts, and hidden layers. Run the separate sanitization control and then reopen the exported artifact. A visible-page redaction does not clean these objects automatically.
The browser tool claims to be local
Inspect its network requests while processing and exporting a test document, read its security documentation, and confirm what is cached or logged. “Client-side” is a processing-location description, not a guarantee of zero uploads or secure removal.
The output looks different or loses accessibility
Compare the result with the original working copy page by page. Rasterization and aggressive flattening can remove text selection, tags, links, forms, or searchable content. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable for the document’s recipients before using those techniques.
