To show pages as a facing spread on the InDesign document canvas, turn on Facing Pages. For an existing file, go to File > Document Setup, enable Facing Pages, and select OK. If you mean the page thumbnails in the Pages panel, change that panel’s display instead: open Window > Pages, choose Panel Options from its menu, and deselect Show Vertically. These are separate settings: one changes the document layout; the other changes how thumbnails appear in the panel.
Show facing pages on the document canvas
For a layout intended to show pages facing one another, enable the document’s Facing Pages setting. Adobe describes this as the switch between a single-page layout and a spread layout. In an existing document:
- Open the document.
- Choose File > Document Setup.
- Turn on Facing Pages.
- Select OK.

Start a new document with facing pages
- Choose File > New > Document.
- Enter the page count. To start with a two-page spread, enter 2.
- Select Facing Pages if it is not already selected.
- Set any other document options, then select Create.

If the document canvas is already arranged as you want but the thumbnails are stacked vertically, change the panel display:

- Choose Window > Pages.
- Open the Pages panel menu and choose Panel Options.
- Under the page display settings, deselect Show Vertically.
This changes thumbnail arrangement in the Pages panel, not the document’s facing-page layout. See Adobe’s page and spread display instructions.
Stop pages from regrouping when you add or remove them
In a facing-page document, shuffle settings determine whether pages are redistributed as pages are added or removed. Adobe provides controls for the whole document and for an individual spread. The document-level and spread-level options are available from the Pages panel menu; see Adobe’s redistribution guide.

Keep a custom spread together
To preserve a custom multi-page arrangement, select the spread in the Pages panel and turn off Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle. Adobe calls this arrangement an island spread. To make a spread span document pages, turn off Allow Document Pages to Shuffle and insert pages. Adobe’s current guidance says a spread can contain up to 10 pages.
Select the spread, not just a page
For spread-specific commands, select the page numbers beneath the spread thumbnail. Adobe distinguishes selecting from targeting: double-clicking a thumbnail or its page numbers targets and selects it, while selecting the page numbers selects the whole spread. Check inside and outside margins for a bound layout
When Facing Pages is enabled, the margin controls use Inside and Outside. Review those values after changing document setup so the margins correspond to the binding and outer edges of the pages. Adobe explains these controls in its document setup guidance.
