To make one color stand out in Lightroom, use a Color Range mask when you want to adjust selected areas, or the Color Mixer when you want to change that color wherever it appears across the photo. For a local effect, sample the target color, inspect and refine the selection, then adjust Saturation inside the mask.
Choose between Color Mixer and a Color Range mask
The right tool depends on where the color appears and where you want the change to apply. Adobe describes Hue as changing a color, Saturation as changing its vividness, and Luminance as changing its brightness in Lightroom Classic’s color controls: Lightroom Classic Masking tool.

Adobe’s HSL tutorial covers targeted hue, saturation, and lightness adjustments: Adjust the hue, saturation, or lightness of a specific color in your photo. For an edit that should stay local, a mask provides more control than a global color-range adjustment.

Make a color pop with a Color Range mask
The steps below follow Adobe’s Lightroom web instructions. Adobe also documents Color Range masking in Lightroom mobile and Lightroom Classic, but interface labels and available controls can differ by version. See Adobe’s Color Range masking instructions for the web workflow.

- Open the photo and choose Masking. Create a Color Range mask.
- Sample the color you want to emphasize. Click a representative area. If the color varies across the object, drag over a small representative area so the selection includes more of its variation.
- Inspect the mask overlay. The overlay shows which parts of the image are selected. Check whether it covers the intended color and whether it has picked up unrelated areas.
- Refine the selection. Adjust Refine to narrow or widen the selected color range. In Lightroom web, Adobe also documents an Amount control for changing how much of the image is selected.
- Adjust the selected color. Raise Saturation to make it more vivid. Adjust Hue if you want to shift its color rather than simply strengthen it. Use local tonal controls only when they support the intended look.
- Review the whole image. Check for spill on other objects, then compare the edit with the original. Set the adjustment by what looks appropriate in this photograph; Adobe’s instructions do not prescribe a universal saturation value.
Lightroom mobile also supports Color Range and Luminance Range selections, with adjustments made within a mask. Consult Adobe’s Lightroom masking instructions for that version.
Keep the adjustment inside the subject
A Color Range mask selects by color, not by object identity. If the same hue appears in the subject and elsewhere—for example, a red flower and a red sign—the mask may select both. Refine the color range first. If the boundary still needs work, combine or intersect the Color Range selection with a subject selection or a brush mask.

Adobe’s tutorial demonstrates intersecting a subject selection with Color Range to isolate colored details: Create custom masks for precise image adjustments. This approach uses both kinds of information: the subject selection helps define the object, while Color Range targets the desired hue within it.

Fix common Color Range mask problems
- The mask misses parts of the object: Sample a small area that represents more of the color variation, then inspect the overlay and adjust Refine.
- Unrelated areas change too: Tighten the color range or constrain the selection with a subject or brush mask. Color similarity alone cannot distinguish objects.
- The color looks artificial: Reduce the Saturation adjustment and compare against the original. The appropriate amount depends on the photo; there is no documented one-size-fits-all setting.
- You want every instance of that color to change: Use Color Mixer/HSL rather than building a local mask, while checking for other areas of the image in the same color range.
- You want a different color, not just a stronger one: Adjust Hue within the mask. Saturation changes vividness; it does not by itself select a new hue.
