A separate backup machine can reduce the chance that one equipment failure takes out both your home lab and your backup, but separation alone does not make a backup safe. The practical test is whether a copy would remain available after the failures you expect—and whether you have restored it successfully.

What separate hardware does—and does not—protect

Putting a backup target on separate hardware can help if the primary NAS or a lab machine fails. It does not necessarily protect the backup from ransomware, a compromised administrator account, a shared network outage, theft, or a fire. If the same systems and credentials can reach both machines, a compromise may reach both copies.

CISA recommends maintaining offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing their availability and integrity. Its guidance emphasizes offline storage because ransomware may search for accessible backups and delete or encrypt them. CISA #StopRansomware Guide

So treat “separate hardware” as one layer of protection, not proof of independence. Ask what can access the backup, where it is stored, and how you would retrieve it if the NAS or lab were unavailable.

Map backup copies to the failures they should survive

The 3-2-1 guideline described in a US-CERT backup options paper calls for three copies of important data, including the primary; two types of media; and one copy off-site. It is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Each copy should address a different failure rather than merely increase the count. US-CERT Backup Options

Copy What it can help you recover from Key question
Primary data on the NAS Normal use; it is the working copy, not a backup. Can you still reach it if the NAS fails or is compromised?
Separate local backup target A failure of the primary NAS or its storage, depending on how the copy is maintained. Can the same lab account or compromised system delete or encrypt it?
Off-site or disconnected copy A local incident such as theft, fire, or ransomware that reaches network-accessible copies. Can you retrieve it without the original NAS, lab, or working local network?

The table applies the guideline to a home lab; CISA does not prescribe this exact topology. Media diversity and off-site storage matter because multiple copies on the same device, in the same place, or under the same access path can share failure modes.

Choose a backup path you can keep isolated

External drive

An external hard drive is one possible local backup target. CISA advises storing it safely and disconnecting it when it is not actively being used, since a connected drive may be exposed to ransomware. That disconnection creates a deliberate step in the routine, so choose a schedule you can actually follow. CISA: Tips for Protecting Internet-Connected Devices

Off-site copy

An off-site copy addresses local physical events that a second machine in the same home cannot. CISA discusses cloud backup among available options, but the important properties are that the copy is outside the local site and that you can retrieve and restore it when needed. Do not assume that another networked copy is isolated merely because it is hosted elsewhere.

Check access, not just device count

  • Identify which accounts and machines can write to or delete each backup.
  • Consider whether a compromised lab account or system could reach the backup target.
  • Keep at least one copy offline or otherwise unavailable to routine access when it is not being updated.
  • Keep an off-site copy if you need protection from a site-wide event.

Back up what you need to rebuild, not only your files

Personal files may be only part of a useful recovery. CISA recommends retaining recovery images and the applicable software, source code, or executables needed to rebuild systems. A system image can speed recovery, but it may not install on different hardware or platforms. Keep the materials needed for a rebuild accessible independently of the lab itself. CISA #StopRansomware Guide Joint CISA, FBI, and HHS advisory

Include configuration and other system-specific information needed to recreate services, alongside user data. Decide what “recovered” means for your setup: getting files back, restoring a NAS, or bringing a service online. Those outcomes require different recovery materials and checks.

Protect encrypted backups from becoming inaccessible

Encryption can protect stored data, but it also makes the recovery key or password essential. CISA advises securing encryption recovery keys and passwords. Store recovery information somewhere that remains accessible if the NAS, lab, or primary password manager is unavailable; otherwise, a usable backup can become permanently inaccessible. Test a restore, not just the backup job

A completed task or a green dashboard status shows that a process ran; it does not prove that the intended files are intact or that a system can be rebuilt. CISA calls for regular testing of backup availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario. It does not specify a universal interval, so choose a cadence that fits how often your data and services change.

  • Three-year limited warranty protection plan included and three year Rescue Data Recovery Services included
  1. Restore a selection of important files to a separate destination rather than overwriting the originals.
  2. Open the restored files and check that their contents are intact.
  3. If you need to restore services, test a rebuild using saved configuration, images, and required software.
  4. Check that the restore path still works without relying on the original NAS or lab.

Record what you tested and what did not restore cleanly. A successful file restore establishes that those files and that path worked; it does not by itself prove that every service or the entire system can be recovered.

Make the routine sustainable

Isolation, off-site storage, and restore checks add operational work. A backup approach is only useful if you can maintain it: run copies, disconnect offline media, protect access credentials, and periodically verify recovery. A simple plan that you can execute is more dependable than a more elaborate design whose copies remain connected or whose restore steps have never been tried.
