GraphQL can make data access easier to inspect when its schema and project settings are managed as code—but a directive does not automatically configure a data source or secure a field. The GraphQL specification defines directive syntax and locations; the server or platform decides what each supported directive does at runtime.
What configuration as code means for GraphQL
A GraphQL schema describes the types and fields an API exposes. Directives annotate schema elements or operations, while project configuration can identify schema and document files, settings, and endpoint metadata. Together, these inputs can be version-controlled and reviewed, making the intended API shape and project setup more visible.
That does not mean GraphQL has one universal configuration file or that schema declarations alone implement data access. A resolver, connector, server, or platform must interpret the relevant configuration and supply runtime behavior. GraphQL.org explains schemas and types in its schema documentation.

GraphQL directives use a standard syntax, but custom directive behavior is implementation-dependent. The specification puts it plainly: “GraphQL services define what directives they support and where they support them.” A directive name on a schema is therefore not a portable instruction by itself; the service must support that directive and define its permitted locations and meaning.
#1 Best Overall
Before adopting a directive, check the specification and the documentation for the server or platform that will execute the schema. The GraphQL Specification, September 2025 defines the standard framework and explains that services determine their supported directives.
How declarative data-source configuration can work
A platform may provide directives that connect schema fields to data sources. For example, Apollo describes its @connect directives as a way to connect REST endpoints to GraphQL subgraphs and define an API data source for a schema field. This is an Apollo-specific capability, not behavior guaranteed by GraphQL itself; consult the Apollo Connectors directives documentation for its supported setup and semantics.
The practical benefit is that a data-source relationship can be expressed alongside schema design rather than being left implicit. The runtime still needs a component that understands the directive, reaches the endpoint, and maps the response. In another GraphQL implementation, the same directive may be unsupported or mean something different.
Keep project settings separate from runtime behavior
GraphQL project configuration may bring together schema paths, operation-document paths, project-specific settings, and endpoint metadata. These settings help tools and teams identify the files and services that belong to a project, but they do not automatically define how a field fetches data or how access is enforced.

The VS Code GraphQL extension repository includes configuration examples, but the repository is marked as migrated. Treat those examples as historical context, not as authoritative current syntax; verify the configuration format in maintained documentation for the tool you use. The repository is available at graphql/vscode-graphql.
Place authentication and authorization at the right points
Authentication establishes who or what is making a request. Authorization decides whether that identity may perform a particular action or access particular data. They are related but distinct responsibilities, and a schema annotation is not a substitute for enforcing either one.
GraphQL HTTP guidance recommends placing the GraphQL service behind authentication middleware, then making authorization decisions during execution. That allows the application to evaluate access in the context of the requested fields and data. See GraphQL.org’s serving-over-HTTP guidance.

Implementations may express authorization rules with schema directives, resolvers, platform controls, or a combination. Apollo Server documents schema directives as one authorization approach in its authentication and security documentation. AWS AppSync documents directives for authorization modes and field restrictions in its GraphQL Developer Guide. These are platform-specific mechanisms, not interchangeable GraphQL-standard guarantees.

Choose an approach by responsibility and portability
| Concern | What it covers | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| GraphQL schema and standard directive syntax | Types, fields, and where directive syntax may be used. | A standard syntax does not establish custom runtime behavior; check what the service supports. |
| Project configuration | Schema and document paths, project settings, and endpoint metadata. | Confirm the current format and which tools consume each setting. |
| Data-source connector or resolver | How a field obtains and maps data at runtime. | Identify the implementation that interprets the configuration and handles the upstream request. |
| Authentication middleware | Establishing identity before GraphQL execution. | Confirm how credentials are validated and what identity information reaches execution. |
| Authorization during execution | Deciding whether the authenticated caller may access requested data. | Test restrictions at the relevant field or data boundary; a directive declaration alone is not proof of enforcement. |
Make the setup reviewable and testable
- Keep schema files and supported project configuration under version control so changes can be reviewed.
- For every custom directive, document which server or platform interprets it, its allowed locations, and its effect.
- Separate endpoint and project metadata from resolver, connector, and authorization behavior in your design.
- Validate configuration with the tool or service that consumes it, and test the resulting execution behavior.
- Test authorization with both permitted and denied requests; do not infer access control from declarative syntax alone.
There is no single operational workflow established across GraphQL implementations. Decide where configuration is validated, deployed, and tested based on the tools and runtime that own it.
