You usually don’t need to replace Auth0’s hosted login page to make it fit your product. Keep New Universal Login and start with its theme, text, and prompt customization options; use page templates or Advanced Customizations for Universal Login (ACUL) only when those controls cannot meet a specific need. This preserves Auth0’s hosted authentication flow without putting a password form inside your app. Auth0’s Universal Login customization guide describes the available levels of control.
Why customize Universal Login instead of replacing it?
Auth0 identifies Universal Login as its primary hosted login experience and says active development is focused there. Classic Login no longer receives updates. For a branding or wording problem, rebuilding the login interface in your app or switching to Classic Login adds complexity without being the usual first step. See Auth0’s Universal Login overview.
With hosted Universal Login, Auth0’s centralized pages drive the authentication flow. Your app still needs to initiate the appropriate authorization request and handle the response, but ordinary login-page configuration does not require application-level changes. That is different from embedding a credential form in the app. Auth0’s overview of the Universal Login experience covers the flow and related capabilities.
Choose the right level of customization
Start with the least complex option that satisfies the design requirement. Auth0 documents several distinct levels of customization; deeper control brings more implementation and maintenance responsibility.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
| Approach | Best suited to | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| New Universal Login themes, text elements, and partials | Brand styling, visible wording, and prompt-level content | Low to moderate control through Dashboard or API settings; keeps the hosted flow in place. |
| New Universal Login page templates or ACUL | A specific need for layout, conditional logic, or deeper presentation control | Higher control; templates require a custom domain. Confirm current availability and test the customized experience. |
| Classic Login | A concrete legacy or specialized requirement that the current Universal Login path cannot meet | Extensive HTML and JavaScript customization, but Classic Login no longer receives updates. Customized pages require tenant maintenance and JavaScript can introduce XSS risk. |
| Embedded or custom in-app login UI | A strict interface or file-size constraint that requires application-side control | Highest application-side control; changes the authentication architecture and is not the default remedy for a branding problem. |
For most branding changes, use the first row. Move to templates or ACUL only when you can name the requirement that themes, text, and partials cannot satisfy. Auth0’s overview of Universal Login customization, updated September 16, 2026, outlines the current customization methods.
Check which login experience your tenant uses
- Open the Auth0 Dashboard and go to Branding > Universal Login > Advanced Options.
- Confirm whether the tenant is using New Universal Login or Classic Login before following customization instructions. Their controls and implementation methods differ.
- If the tenant is on Classic Login, decide whether a concrete requirement justifies keeping it. Otherwise, plan around New Universal Login and verify the result in your application.
Auth0 documents the Universal Login and Classic Login distinction in its Universal Login overview.
Customize the hosted page in stages
1. Set the visual theme
Use Universal Login Themes to adjust the brand elements Auth0 exposes, including logo, colors, fonts, and button styles. This is the right place to start when the page feels visually disconnected from your product but its structure is acceptable.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
2. Update labels and messages
Use Text Elements to change visible labels, hints, messages, and errors. Prefer clear, task-specific wording; an error message should help someone understand what to do next rather than merely sound on-brand.
3. Add prompt-specific content
Use Partials for appropriate signup or login prompt content without taking over the whole page layout. These options let you adjust the experience while keeping Auth0’s hosted authentication flow.
Auth0 describes themes, text elements, partials, and templates as separate customization levels in its Universal Login customization documentation.

4. Use templates or ACUL only for a defined gap
Page templates provide page-level structure and layout customization. ACUL is intended for advanced layout and logic control, such as changing HTML structure, conditional rendering, dynamic content, or using trusted JavaScript. These are not necessary just to change a logo or button color. Check current documentation and feature availability before depending on ACUL or building around specific implementation details.

Auth0 documentation requires a custom domain for customized Universal Login page templates. Auth0’s Organizations guide describes custom domains as a paid-plan feature. Check the tenant’s current eligibility and plan terms before treating templates as available at no additional cost.
Keep the application on the normal authorization flow
Customizing the hosted page does not replace the application’s responsibility to start authentication correctly and process the result. Use an Auth0 SDK where available, or follow Auth0’s documented authorization flow for your application. For OIDC, the authorization request is made through the appropriate endpoint, such as /authorize; a direct /login URL can fail when no default login route is configured.

Auth0 says its default Universal Login experience employs WCAG 2.2 AA and EN 301 549, and describes features such as inline validation errors, screen-reader navigation attributes, associated HTML labels, and distinct page titles. That statement concerns the default experience; a customization can affect accessibility, so test the modified page rather than assuming it remains conformant. Why Classic Login and custom code are not the quick fix
Classic Login supports extensive page customization, but Auth0 says it no longer receives updates. When a tenant customizes a Classic Login page, it takes responsibility for maintaining that page, including updating included SDKs or widgets. Auth0 also warns about cross-site scripting (XSS) risk and urges caution with third-party JavaScript on login pages. Read the Classic Login customization guidance before retaining or changing a customized page.
Custom Universal Login templates also need careful implementation. Auth0 Support warns that CSS class names can change and that JavaScript customizations can depend on a rigid DOM and fail without warning. Prefer documented customization mechanisms when they meet the requirement, and verify current implementation guidance before relying on selectors or custom scripts. See Auth0 Support’s page-template guidance.
