Reducing Android’s animation scales can make navigation feel quicker, but it does not make the processor or apps do work twice as fast. Google describes Developer options as tools for profiling and debugging—not as a universal performance-tuning recipe. The most defensible everyday change is shortening interface animations; other commonly suggested toggles can change app behavior rather than improve speed.
What Developer options can—and cannot—speed up
Animation controls change how quickly interface effects play. A shorter animation can make a screen appear to respond sooner because the transition ends earlier, but it does not by itself speed up CPU-bound work, downloads, or calculations. Google’s documentation does not substantiate a “twice as fast” improvement from these settings.
Other controls affect graphics rendering or app lifecycles. Their effects depend on the app and device, and Google presents them as tools for understanding app behavior on a target device, not routine optimizations for every phone. See Google’s on-device Developer options guide.

On Android 4.2 and later, Developer options must be enabled before the screen appears. The exact menu path and labels vary by manufacturer and Android version, so there is no single reliable path for every phone.

- Open Settings and look under About phone for Build number. If it is elsewhere, consult your phone maker’s instructions.
- Tap Build number as directed by the device. The phone may ask for your screen lock; follow its on-screen confirmation that Developer options are enabled.
- Return to Settings and find Developer options. Its location and name can differ by device.
Google’s guide lists the Build number locations for device families and notes that menus may vary. Treat the labels below as common names, not a guarantee that every phone has the same controls.
Which settings are reasonable to change?
Window animation scale
This controls the playback speed of window animations. Google documents that a lower scale plays the animation faster. Reducing it can make opening or closing windows feel more immediate, while leaving the underlying app or system task unchanged. The control changes animation playback, not measured processing performance.

Transition animation scale
This controls the playback speed of transitions between screens or activities. A lower scale makes the transition play faster, which can reduce the time you spend watching the interface move between views. It does not guarantee that the destination app has finished loading or that its work completes sooner.
These two animation scales are the clearest choices if your goal is to make navigation feel snappier. Choose a lower scale that remains comfortable to use; you can restore the original values if the faster effects feel abrupt. Google documents both controls in its Developer options guide.

Animator duration scale
This option is often grouped with animation settings, but Google’s current guide excerpt does not define its precise behavior. Its effect may depend on the device and Android version. Read the on-device description before changing it rather than assuming it is identical to the two documented scales.
Why the other popular toggles are not general speed boosts
Force GPU rendering
Google describes this option as forcing apps to use the GPU for 2D drawing when they were written without GPU rendering enabled by default. That conditional behavior is not evidence that forcing it improves every app, and it is not a universal smoothness setting. Android’s hardware acceleration documentation explains the graphics pipeline; the rendering path depends on app behavior.

Background process limit
This setting controls how many processes can run in the background. Google does not document one process-limit value as best for all users. Limiting processes can affect what apps can keep doing when you leave them, so changing the cap to chase speed may disrupt normal app behavior.
Android’s background-execution guidance explains that many apps and services may run at once and that background activity can affect user experience in resource-intensive situations. It does not establish a universal user-facing process cap. See Background Execution Limits.

Don’t keep activities
This option destroys each activity as soon as you leave its main view. Google describes it as an app option for understanding behavior on a target device, not as an everyday performance fix. Because it changes how activities survive when you switch away, it can interfere with ordinary app use.

When to leave Developer options alone
If your concern is that a particular app is slow, changing unrelated system toggles is unlikely to identify the cause. Google frames Developer options as profiling and debugging tools; rendering diagnostics, for example, are meant to investigate frame performance rather than promise a speed gain. Its slow-rendering guidance uses a 16 ms frame-time reference for GPU profiling, not as a claim that any setting makes a phone faster by a measured amount.
