To make a Hugging Face model portable, package the right artifacts, pin the model revision, and choose an export format and runtime that work together on your target hardware. A model that loads in a notebook is not automatically ready for ONNX, a hosted endpoint, or a mobile device; validate the complete path before deployment.
1. Record exactly what you are moving
Start with the model repository and the intended destination. These details determine what must be packaged and which runtimes are viable.
- Repository and revision: Record the Hub repository ID. For deployments that need a stable snapshot, pin a commit revision rather than relying on a moving branch. Inference Endpoint configuration includes a revision field for choosing which repository revision to download. Hugging Face Inference Endpoints configuration.
- Task and architecture: Write down what the model does and its architecture. The exporter may need the task specified, especially when it cannot infer it from a local model. Check the selected architecture and task against the chosen export route. Transformers production export guide.
- Model-specific requirements: Read the model repository’s card and license, and identify custom code, dependencies, configuration, and other required files. These vary by model; there is no single universal license or dependency rule for all Hub repositories.
2. Inventory the artifacts and versions
Build the deployment bundle from the requirements of the selected model and runtime, not from a generic file list. For the documented local ONNX workflow, keep the model weights and tokenizer files together. The exporter’s example is not a complete manifest for every architecture, so verify any additional configuration or model-specific files against the repository and export path. Optimum ONNX export guide.

3. Choose the representation and runtime together
Keep the Transformers representation when the destination supports it. For compatible execution environments, consider exporting through Optimum to ONNX and running the result in a compatible ONNX runtime. For supported mobile or edge use cases, consider ExecuTorch. Hugging Face documents these as different export paths; neither guarantees that every model works on every target. Transformers production export guide.
Exporting a local model to ONNX
- Check that the model architecture and task are supported by the export path you intend to use.
- Keep the model weights and tokenizer files together. If the task cannot be inferred, specify it as required by the exporter.
- Export with
optimum-cli export onnxor use the programmatic Optimum ONNX API described in the official guide. - Save the exported model and tokenizer, then load them using a compatible runtime such as ONNX Runtime.
- Run the target application on the intended hardware and check output behavior, resource use, and performance.
A successful export proves that an artifact was produced; it does not establish identical numerical results, latency, or application behavior on another runtime. Treat tokenizer behavior, precision or quantization settings, supported operations, and hardware as part of validation rather than assuming parity.

4. Choose a deployment path
Hugging Face documents several ways to serve a model or run it in another environment. Their suitability depends on model support, runtime, infrastructure, and operational needs.
| Path | May fit when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Local inference server | You want local development, self-managed infrastructure, or control over the serving stack. | Confirm compatibility with the model format and task. Documented options include llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM, LiteLLM, and TGI. Inference Providers and local inference options. |
| Inference Provider | You are prototyping or want to use a supported serverless provider. | Specify the Hub model ID and provider, then confirm that provider supports the model. Provider and model recommendations may change. Inference Providers. |
| Dedicated Inference Endpoint | You need a managed API on dedicated infrastructure. | Choose provider, region, accelerator, instance, access mode, scaling, secrets, network policy, and model revision. Endpoint setup and Endpoint access and configuration. |
| Custom endpoint container | The default serving image does not cover your serving engine or container configuration. | Check the custom image’s health route, environment, engine parameters, and hardware requirements. Hugging Face documents custom images for endpoints. Custom container guide. |
| ONNX or ExecuTorch export | You need an execution format suited to a target runtime or device. | Verify architecture and task support, required files, runtime operations, and behavior on the destination hardware. Transformers production export guide. |
Compare options using model and task support, runtime and hardware compatibility, required artifacts, revision reproducibility, access control, network exposure, scaling, region availability, and operating cost. Endpoint hardware choices and pricing are presented in the product interface and may change; there is no stable price comparison to apply across deployments.

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
5. Configure hosted endpoints deliberately
A dedicated endpoint is a configured deployment, not simply a model-file upload. In addition to the model revision, select the serving infrastructure and decide how the service will be exposed and scaled. Hugging Face endpoint creation guide.
- Authentication: The guide lists Private as the default access mode, alongside Public and Authenticated. Public endpoints allow access without authentication, so assess exposure before choosing one.
- Network access: Endpoints are internet-accessible by default with TLS/SSL, according to the guide. AWS deployments can use PrivateLink to restrict access to a VPC.
- Secrets: Use the documented secret environment-variable facility for sensitive values instead of treating them as ordinary plain environment variables.
- Scaling: Set replica and scale-to-zero behavior to match the workload. The guide documents a one-hour inactivity default for scale-to-zero; confirm the current setting and behavior in the live interface when configuring an endpoint.
- Container and hardware: Ensure the chosen image, engine parameters, accelerator, instance, and region meet the model’s requirements.
6. Validate the full deployment before release
Test the exact combination you plan to ship: model revision, architecture, task, tokenizer, export or serving format, runtime version, precision or quantization choices, hardware, and application. Check more than whether the model starts.

- Measure resource use and performance on the destination hardware under the workload you expect.
- Verify that required files, dependencies, secrets, authentication, and network restrictions are present in the deployed environment.
- Record the tested model revision and runtime versions so the deployed artifact can be reproduced.
Compatibility remains specific to the selected model and target. The official export and deployment paths do not establish that any particular repository, license, custom code, dependency set, or runtime combination will work; resolve those details against the chosen model and destination before treating a package as portable.
