MainstreamOS makes Arch Linux and the Hyprland desktop more approachable by wrapping many setup and customization tasks in graphical tools. That could lower the barrier for people curious about Linux, but the available evidence does not show that it has made Linux a household name. A positive review is evidence of one reviewer’s experience, not proof of broad adoption.
What MainstreamOS is—and what it is not
MainstreamOS is an Arch-based Linux distribution built around Hyprland, a tiling Wayland compositor, with a custom desktop based on Quickshell. It is a particular Linux system and desktop design, not a measure of Linux as a whole. Jack Wallen’s ZDNET review, published August 19, 2026, is titled “Can MainstreamOS finally make Linux a household name? I tried it to find out.” Its surfaced takeaways are strongly positive, describing a complete desktop and an easier way into Arch and Hyprland. That is the reviewer’s evaluation. Is MainstreamOS easy to use?
Its central usability idea is to put common desktop controls in graphical settings pages instead of requiring users to edit configuration files for routine changes. That can make customization more approachable, particularly for people who would rather use settings screens than work directly with text configuration.

Graphical controls do not remove every Linux learning curve. MainstreamOS still asks users to install an operating system, choose applications and updates, and check whether their hardware and required software work. How installation and recovery are presented
The project lists an x86_64 installation image of 3.4 GB. Its documented flow is to write the image to a USB drive, boot the computer from it, and use the graphical installer. The project says dual-boot setup and full-disk encryption can be configured during installation. The same documentation describes system snapshots and a route to roll back from the boot menu, along with one-button updates and repair setup tools. These features may help with recovery, but documentation alone does not establish how reliably rollback works in every situation. Back up important files before installing or making substantial system changes.

- Updates and recovery: The project documents one-button updates, snapshots, and boot-menu rollback.
- Gaming: It documents a dedicated Steam gaming session. That does not establish compatibility or performance for any particular game, graphics hardware, or peripheral.
- Hardware and security: The documentation describes hardware-driver selection and signed downloads and packages. These are project claims, not independent verification of security or hardware coverage.
- Applications: The settings include controls for native packages and Flatpaks. Before switching, check that the applications you need for work, study, or creative tasks are available and function as required.

Could it make Linux a household name?
MainstreamOS addresses a real obstacle for some newcomers: the sense that using Linux means editing files and piecing together a desktop manually. Its graphical configuration approach, installer, and bundled features give it a clear pitch for making one Linux setup easier to approach. Wallen’s positive review adds a favorable individual assessment.
Those points do not answer the adoption question. The available sources provide no measured user numbers, market-share figures, or evidence of household-level reach. Nor do they establish comparative performance or broad compatibility. MainstreamOS may be an inviting option for people who want to try this particular Arch-and-Hyprland experience; whether it can make Linux widely familiar remains unproven.

Who should consider trying it?
MainstreamOS is worth investigating if you want a customizable Linux desktop, prefer graphical settings for common adjustments, and are willing to verify compatibility before installing. It may be a poor fit if you need guaranteed support for a specific work application, game, device, or existing system configuration and have not confirmed that it works.
