For the lowest concern about magnetic interference, choose a well-fitting nonmagnetic case and keep magnetic accessories or magnetic metal away from the rear cameras. Apple warns that strong magnetic fields can interfere with sensors used by optical image stabilisation (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus. That warning does not mean every MagSafe case is unsafe, nor does it establish that MagSafe cases damage cameras. The relevant questions are the strength and position of magnets, the case construction, the accessory attached to the phone and your exact iPhone camera system.
This guide explains what Apple’s warning means, how MagSafe and nonmagnetic cases differ, which iPhones use the affected systems, and what to do if camera behaviour changes after attaching a magnetic accessory.
What Apple actually warns about
Apple Support’s article “Magnetic accessories may interfere with iPhone cameras”, published January 22, 2024, says: “For the best camera performance, avoid accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera (or cameras).” The guidance is aimed at avoiding a possible sensor-interference mechanism. It does not classify every MagSafe case as a camera hazard and does not provide an interference rate or a magnetic-field threshold.

Apple gives examples including folio closures, separable-case connections and rigid mounts such as car mounts. A case’s MagSafe label alone cannot tell you whether its magnetic assembly creates a problematic field at your particular camera.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How optical image stabilisation works
On supported iPhones, OIS uses a gyroscope to detect movement and moves the lens to reduce image motion. This is a physical stabilisation system: the lens position changes while the phone is being held or while the camera is recording. Apple says the lens-position sensors respond to magnetic fields. A nearby magnet can interfere with those sensors, temporarily disable them or reduce their accuracy, limiting the lens movement that OIS can make.
How closed-loop autofocus works
Closed-loop autofocus uses accelerometers and magnetic sensors to compensate for gravity and vibration while focusing. If a magnetic field disrupts the relevant sensors, autofocus may not operate with its normal feedback information. The camera may still focus and capture an image, but with reduced assistance from the closed-loop system.
What interference can look like
Apple states that the camera can continue taking photos using other forms of stabilisation, but “without the benefit of OIS and closed-loop AF.” In practical terms, a magnetic accessory can be attached and the camera can appear to work while stabilisation or focusing behaves differently. Possible symptoms include more motion blur, less consistent focus, or a change that disappears when the accessory is removed. These symptoms do not prove that a case is the cause; they are a reason to isolate the phone from nearby magnetic hardware.
MagSafe and nonmagnetic cases compared
The safest choice depends on what you mean by safe. If your priority is minimising the case’s own magnetic exposure, a nonmagnetic case has the simpler design advantage because it removes the case’s magnets from the equation. If you need magnetic attachment or charging, a MagSafe-compatible case may still be reasonable, provided magnets and magnetic metal are not positioned close to the camera modules and you monitor for changes. Apple’s published material does not establish a universal ranking for all cases.

| Factor | MagSafe-compatible case | Nonmagnetic case |
|---|---|---|
| Magnets in the case | Usually includes a magnetic ring or related magnetic components; the exact construction and field at the camera depend on the design. | Does not add the case’s own magnets to the phone, assuming it contains no magnetic metal or hidden magnetic closure. |
| Camera-interference concern | Potentially higher magnetic exposure from the case itself, especially if a strong field or metal component is close to a rear camera. Apple does not say that every MagSafe case interferes. | Lower concern from the case itself because there is no case magnet, but a separate magnetic mount, wallet, plate or other accessory can still create exposure. |
| Apple’s practical advice | Avoid magnets or magnetic metal near the rear camera or cameras. MagSafe compatibility alone is not a camera-safety test. | Avoid separate magnets or magnetic metal near the rear camera or cameras; nonmagnetic construction does not protect against an attached magnetic accessory. |
| Attachment and charging | Supports the intended magnetic attachment ecosystem when the phone and case are compatible. | Does not provide a magnetic attachment point unless another magnetic component is added. |
| Published comparative evidence | Apple provides a mechanism and prevention guidance, not model-by-model case test results or an interference rate. | Apple provides no controlled MagSafe-versus-nonmagnetic case comparison or incidence rate; the lower-exposure conclusion follows from removing the case’s own magnets. |
Why the case label is less important than placement
Two cases with the same compatibility label can place their magnetic components differently. The relevant comparison is not simply “MagSafe versus non-MagSafe,” but whether the case contains magnets or magnetisable metal, where those parts sit relative to the rear camera modules, and what you attach to the case afterward.
- Case construction: Look for a magnetic ring, magnetic plate, metal reinforcement or a closure that can sit near the camera island. Product descriptions and physical inspection may reveal these parts, but a compatibility label does not provide a field-strength measurement.
- Camera proximity: A component directly beside or over the camera area is more relevant to Apple’s warning than a component located far from the modules. Apple does not publish a universal safe-distance number.
- Attached accessories: A magnetic car mount, wallet, kickstand, plate or folio closure can change the magnetic environment even when the underlying case is nonmagnetic.
- Phone model: Camera modules differ by iPhone generation and by lens. A case must fit the exact model, and a cutout designed for one camera layout may not be appropriate for another.
Which iPhone camera systems are covered?
Apple’s support guidance identifies the camera features that can be affected, but not every iPhone has the same combination of cameras or stabilisation systems.
| Feature | Models listed by Apple | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Optical image stabilisation (OIS) | iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 7 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). | OIS is not available with the Ultra Wide camera on iPhone 11 and later, nor with the Telephoto camera on iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus. |
| Closed-loop autofocus | iPhone XS and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). | The affected sensor arrangement depends on the device and camera being used. |
These model lists describe feature availability; they are not a list of cases tested for magnetic safety. When buying a case, match the exact iPhone model and generation rather than relying on a broad description such as “fits recent iPhones.” Apple’s current store lists cases for different devices in its MagSafe cases and covers category, which confirms the product category but does not constitute camera-interference testing for any individual case.

How to choose the lower-risk setup
1. Identify the exact iPhone model
Check the model in Settings and compare it with the case listing. Camera layout, lens count and the presence of OIS or closed-loop autofocus vary by generation. A case that physically fits a different model can leave a camera partly covered, place material over a lens or expose the phone to an unintended accessory position.

2. Decide whether magnetic attachment is essential
If magnetic mounting, a magnetic wallet or magnetic charging alignment is not important, a well-fitting nonmagnetic case is the straightforward option for minimising magnetic exposure from the case itself. Select one with no magnetic closure, ring, plate or metal insert near the camera area.
3. Inspect a MagSafe case before relying on it
If you need MagSafe compatibility, examine where the magnetic ring and any metal reinforcement are located. Keep the camera cutout clear and avoid designs that place a strong magnet or magnetisable plate directly beside the rear cameras. Apple does not publish a field-strength threshold, so visual placement is a practical screening step rather than a guarantee.
4. Audit every accessory, not just the case
Remove or reposition magnetic mounts, wallets, folio covers, kickstands and plates that sit near the rear camera. A nonmagnetic case cannot prevent interference from a separate magnet. Rigid mounts deserve particular attention because Apple specifically includes them among the accessory types that can contain strong magnets or magnetic metal.
5. Test the camera without changing several things at once
Take comparable photos and short video clips with the phone bare or in the case without its accessory, then with the accessory attached. Keep lighting, subject distance and camera lens the same. If the behaviour changes only after the magnetic component is added, remove that component and repeat the test. This is an isolation procedure, not a controlled measurement of field strength.

Can a MagSafe case damage an iPhone camera?
Apple’s published warning describes possible interference with sensors, including temporary disabling or reduced accuracy. It does not state that MagSafe cases damage camera hardware, and it does not claim that all MagSafe cases cause problems. The documented concern is reduced access to OIS or closed-loop autofocus while a problematic magnetic field is present.
That distinction matters. A camera that still captures photos is not necessarily receiving normal stabilisation and autofocus assistance, but a change in behaviour does not by itself establish permanent damage. If the camera returns to normal after the magnetic accessory is removed, the accessory’s field is a plausible explanation. If the camera continues malfunctioning after removal, follow Apple’s separate camera troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the case caused hardware damage.
What to do when the camera changes after attaching a magnetic accessory
- Remove the magnetic accessory. Detach the mount, wallet, plate, folio section or other magnetic component from the case.
- Remove the case if necessary. If the behaviour remains, take the iPhone out of the case so the case’s own ring, closure or metal insert is no longer near the cameras.
- Retest each camera. Check the lenses and modes you normally use, including the camera that showed the change. Look for focus consistency, stabilisation and image sharpness.
- Restart the camera workflow. Close and reopen the Camera app, then repeat the test. Keep the phone and subject still enough to distinguish ordinary motion blur from a stabilisation change.
- Leave the magnetic hardware off. If the camera works normally without it, do not reattach that component near the camera. Choose a different mount or a nonmagnetic case if the accessory is not essential.
- Seek Apple troubleshooting if the issue persists. Apple advises consulting its separate troubleshooting guidance when the camera still does not work after magnetic accessories are removed.
Common purchasing mistakes
Assuming “MagSafe” means unsafe
MagSafe compatibility identifies a magnetic attachment feature; it does not establish that a particular case creates a camera problem. Treat the case design and accessory placement as the relevant variables.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssuming “nonmagnetic” solves every risk
A case without magnets can still be used with a magnetic car mount, wallet, plate or closure. Apple’s advice concerns magnets and magnetic metal near the cameras regardless of whether those materials are built into the case or added later.

Using a generic fit
Camera islands differ between iPhone models. A case must match the exact model and generation, and its opening should not intrude on any lens or sensor.
Looking for a universal distance or strength rule
Apple’s article does not provide a field-strength threshold, minimum distance or camera-by-camera safe-placement chart. A claim that every ring is safe beyond a particular number of millimetres would go beyond the published evidence.
Interpreting one successful photo as proof
Interference can affect stabilisation or closed-loop autofocus without preventing the camera from opening or taking a picture. Test focus and stabilisation behaviour, not only whether the shutter works.
What is and is not established by the available evidence
Apple establishes a technical mechanism: lens-position sensors respond to magnetic fields, and strong nearby fields may interfere with OIS and closed-loop autofocus. It provides prevention advice to avoid magnets or magnetic metal near the rear cameras and identifies accessory types that can create that situation.
Apple does not publish a statistic comparing MagSafe and nonmagnetic case interference rates. It does not provide controlled tests of named cases, model-by-model case results or a universal magnetic-field threshold. No independent comparative measurements establish that MagSafe cases as a category damage cameras. Therefore, the defensible comparison is limited: a nonmagnetic case removes the case’s own magnetic source, while a MagSafe case requires attention to construction, placement and attached accessories.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
- Choose nonmagnetic when reducing magnetic exposure is your top priority and you do not need magnetic attachment.
- Choose MagSafe when magnetic attachment or charging is important, but keep magnets and magnetic metal away from the rear cameras and verify the exact model fit.
- Change the accessory first when the camera changes only after a mount, wallet, plate or folio component is attached.
- Contact Apple for troubleshooting when removing all magnetic hardware does not restore normal camera behaviour.
