For most people, a wired USB-C power bank is the better default because it is faster when its USB Power Delivery output matches the phone, works with more devices and avoids keeping a heavy pack attached to the handset. A magnetic Qi2 bank is the better convenience choice when the phone and case support magnetic charging and you want to charge without carrying or plugging in a cable.

There is no universal winner. Compare your phone’s supported input, the bank’s USB-C and wireless outputs, usable energy rather than the printed mAh figure, attached weight and airline watt-hours. The word “magnetic” alone does not tell you how quickly or efficiently a bank will charge.

What the two power-bank types actually are

A wired power bank stores energy and sends it through a cable, normally from a USB-C port. The phone negotiates a charging profile with the bank; with USB Power Delivery (PD), the bank can provide the voltage and current that both devices support. A USB-C cable is still required, but the phone is free to sit on a desk, in a car mount or in your hand.

A magnetic power bank attaches to the rear of a compatible phone or case and transfers energy wirelessly. Current models generally use the Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile, which uses magnets to center the charging coils. Some magnetic packs also have a USB-C port, so “magnetic” and “wired” are not always mutually exclusive categories.

Qi2 certification is intended to address safety and interoperability. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) says only certified products may display the Qi or Qi2 logo and that certification involves independent testing: WPC Qi overview. Certification does not mean every phone, case and bank combination has identical speed; the relevant capability must exist on both the phone and the charger.

Speed: when wired charging wins and when it may not

USB-C PD is limited by the phone as well as the bank

For iPhone 15 and later, Apple says a USB-C Power Delivery charger and cable can provide faster wired charging. A USB-A charger is limited to 7.5W on those models. A multi-port adapter, hub or other connected accessory can also reduce the power that reaches the phone. The practical rule is to match the bank’s USB-C PD profile to the phone’s supported input, then use a suitable cable. Apple’s charging guidance is at Apple Support.

A bank advertising a high maximum output cannot force a phone to accept more power than its charging circuitry allows. Conversely, a low-output bank can become the bottleneck even when the phone supports faster charging. If you regularly need a quick top-up, inspect the bank’s USB-C output rating, not just its total capacity.

Qi2 output is a standard capability, not a guaranteed time

Original Qi2 introduced a 15W charging level. The later Qi2 25W standard is described by the WPC as nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. Those are standard-level figures: the phone and bank must both support the relevant version, and actual charging depends on the product combination, temperature, alignment and software. See the WPC’s Qi2 25W release.

It is therefore inaccurate to say that every magnetic bank is slower than every wired bank. A 15W Qi2 connection may be adequate for overnight or desk charging, while a properly matched USB-C PD connection is usually preferable when minutes matter. A bank can also charge wirelessly while offering a faster wired output for occasions when you have a cable.

Why wireless charging can slow during use

Wireless energy transfer creates more heat than a direct cable connection in many situations. Apple notes that charging can slow or pause in extreme temperatures and that demanding apps can reduce charging speed; wireless charging may warm the phone. Read Apple’s guidance at Apple Support and its model-specific discussion at iPhone Air MagSafe Battery guidance.

Navigation, gaming, camera recording and mobile-hotspot use can consume energy almost as quickly as a wireless pack supplies it. A wired connection generally leaves more power available for the phone because it avoids the wireless conversion step and keeps the phone cooler, although the exact result varies by device and conditions.

Compatibility: phone, case and bank must form one working set

Check the phone’s charging standard

Before buying a magnetic model, verify that the phone supports Qi2 or the specific magnetic system named by the manufacturer. Magnetic attachment is not a universal feature of all phones that support ordinary Qi charging. The magnet ring must also be positioned correctly; a loose or off-center attachment can reduce power or stop charging.

Cases can block alignment

A thick, metal, wallet-style or poorly aligned case can interfere with the magnetic connection. Manufacturers often describe compatible case types in their specifications. For example, the Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K), model A1654, says cases can affect charging and lists compatibility with iPhone 12 through iPhone 15 series. Its manufacturer FAQ says the model is not Android-compatible. These are manufacturer claims for that model, not a rule for every magnetic bank: Anker product page.

Look for certification, then confirm the exact model

The WPC’s database can show whether a particular product has completed Qi2 certification. JODA MagQ 10, model JD-PB011, is listed as Qi2 version 2.0.0 with the Magnetic Power Profile, a 15W potential load power and certification dated August 20, 2024: WPC certified-product database. This demonstrates a certified category example; it is not an endorsement or proof of current retail availability.

Capacity: printed mAh is not the same as phone charge

Power-bank capacity is normally printed in milliamp-hours (mAh), measured at the cells’ nominal voltage. The phone receives less usable energy after voltage conversion, circuit losses and wireless transfer losses. A 10,000mAh label should not be read as a promise that a phone will receive 10,000mAh.

For a concrete, model-specific example, Anker estimates that 30% to 45% of the energy in its MagGo 10K is lost in the cells and conversion circuitry, leaving an estimated 6,000 to 7,000mAh available to power devices. That is Anker’s estimate for model A1654, not an independent measurement or a universal percentage: Anker product page.

Wireless use can add practical losses because the coils must remain aligned and the phone may generate extra heat. Do not compare two banks solely by their printed mAh values when one figure describes a wired design and the other describes a magnetic design. Wh (watt-hours), if provided, is a more useful cross-device energy figure, while real phone charge still depends on conversion efficiency and the phone’s own battery.

Use the bank’s energy for realistic expectations

Estimate the bank’s nominal watt-hours with:

Wh = (mAh × nominal cell voltage) ÷ 1,000

Then treat the result as stored energy, not guaranteed delivered energy. A bank’s output electronics, cable, phone charging limits and temperature determine how much reaches the handset. Avoid claims such as “two full charges” unless the manufacturer states the test phone and conditions.

Bulk and ergonomics: convenience has a physical cost

A magnetic pack stays attached while it charges. That is useful when you are walking, commuting or sitting without a cable, but it adds thickness and weight to the phone and can make one-handed use, a pocket or a car mount awkward. Whether that trade-off is acceptable is a practical choice rather than a universal measured result.

With a wired bank, the pack can remain in a bag or pocket while a cable reaches the phone. The cable is another item to carry and can snag, wear out or occupy the phone’s port, yet the handset itself remains slimmer and easier to hold during charging.

Check both the bank’s mass and its dimensions. As a reference point, Anker lists 250g for the A1654 MagGo 10K, along with 10,000mAh (38.5Wh), a 15W maximum wireless output and USB-C input/output. These are manufacturer specifications for that product, not independent test results: Anker product page.

Which type fits your priorities?

Priority Better starting point What to verify
Fastest practical top-up Wired USB-C PD Phone-supported input, bank USB-C output and a suitable cable
Broad device compatibility Wired USB-C Connectors and charging standards for every device you carry
No cable while walking or commuting Magnetic Qi2 Qi2 support, magnetic case alignment and wireless output
Phone must stay slim while charging Wired Cable length and where the bank can be carried
One accessory for several devices USB-C bank, possibly with magnetic output Number of ports, simultaneous-output limits and total shared power
Lowest uncertainty about delivered energy Wired Published USB-C output and realistic capacity information
Air travel Either type Printed or documented watt-hours and airline rules

Choose wired when speed, compatibility or reduced attached bulk is more important than cable-free use. Choose magnetic Qi2 when the phone-and-case combination is confirmed and the ability to attach the pack outweighs slower or more variable wireless behavior.

How to choose a bank from its specification sheet

  1. Identify the phone’s input. Note whether it accepts USB-C PD, Qi2, another magnetic system or only conventional Qi. For iPhone 15 and later, Apple specifically identifies USB-C PD as the faster wired route and USB-A as limited to 7.5W.
  2. Check the case. Remove a thick or metal case during a compatibility check, then confirm that the intended case has a correctly positioned magnetic ring if you plan to charge attached.
  3. Read wired output, not only capacity. Record the USB-C output wattage and supported PD profiles. A high-capacity bank with a low output may be unsuitable for rapid charging.
  4. Read wireless standard and maximum. Distinguish original 15W Qi2 from Qi2 25W. Treat “up to” as a ceiling under compatible conditions, not a guaranteed charging rate.
  5. Compare usable energy. Look for Wh, cell voltage and any clearly attributed efficiency or available-capacity statement. Do not convert a printed mAh number directly into guaranteed phone charges.
  6. Assess attached ergonomics. Compare weight and thickness with the phone. Consider whether you can still use a camera grip, pocket, stand or vehicle mount.
  7. Check simultaneous use. If you need to charge a phone wirelessly while powering earbuds or another device by USB-C, find the manufacturer’s limits for shared output. Port counts alone do not establish the power available to each device.
  8. Confirm travel markings. Keep the watt-hour rating visible and compare it with the airline rules that apply to your itinerary.

Heat, alignment and charging problems

The phone gets hot

Move the phone and bank out of direct sun, stop demanding apps and remove an insulating case temporarily. Apple advises that charging may slow or pause in extreme temperatures. If heat persists, switch to a wired connection or stop charging until the devices cool.

The magnetic bank attaches but does not charge

  • Check that the phone or case has the correct magnetic ring and that the pack is centered.
  • Remove metal plates, card holders and thick cases that may separate the coils.
  • Confirm that the bank is switched on and has charge remaining.
  • Verify that the phone supports the bank’s wireless standard; magnetic attachment alone does not prove electrical compatibility.
  • Try the USB-C output if the model provides one. If wired charging works, the issue is likely alignment, case interference or wireless compatibility rather than an empty bank.

Charging is slower than the box suggests

  • Check whether the phone supports the advertised Qi2 level; a 25W bank cannot make a 15W phone accept 25W.
  • Check temperature and foreground app use.
  • Inspect whether another port or accessory is sharing the bank’s output.
  • For wired charging, use a USB-C PD cable and connect directly to the bank rather than through a hub.

The bank stops before the printed capacity seems used

Cell capacity is not output capacity. Conversion losses, the phone’s charging curve and the bank’s protective shutdown reserve all reduce delivered energy. Compare the manufacturer’s stated Wh or available capacity and treat any charge-count estimate as conditional on the tested phone and method.

Can you take either type on a plane?

For U.S. passenger travel, the FAA says power banks must go in carry-on baggage. Under its stated rules, batteries up to 100Wh are allowed; 101–160Wh requires airline approval, and airlines may impose stricter limits. Check the carrier before departure and keep the rating legible: FAA passenger battery guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rule applies to the stored energy, not whether the bank charges magnetically or through a cable. A 10,000mAh bank listed at 38.5Wh, such as the A1654 example, is below the FAA’s 100Wh threshold, but you should rely on the rating printed on your own unit. International and individual-airline requirements can differ from the U.S. guidance.

Travel checklist

  • Pack the bank in carry-on baggage, never checked luggage under the FAA guidance.
  • Confirm the printed or documented Wh rating before leaving.
  • Ask the airline about approval requirements for banks above 100Wh and any stricter policy.
  • Protect exposed ports and prevent accidental activation in the bag.
  • Carry the cable needed for wired charging even if the bank is primarily magnetic; airport delays make flexibility useful.

Final decision

Buy a wired USB-C power bank if you want the safest all-round choice for speed, device coverage and a phone that remains easy to hold while charging. Buy a magnetic Qi2 bank if your phone and case are confirmed compatible and cable-free attachment is worth the added weight, heat and potentially lower or more variable output. The strongest compromise is a certified magnetic model that also offers USB-C PD, allowing wireless convenience when it helps and a cable when speed or another device demands it.

Judge the specific bank by its certified standard, phone-supported input, output ratings, usable energy, dimensions, weight and watt-hours for travel—not by the label “magnetic” or “wired” alone.
