Choose the Magico A3 if you have floor space for a 44-inch, 110-pound tower, want the greater headroom implied by its published 88 dB sensitivity, and prioritize deeper bass from a full-range three-way design. Choose the Magico A1 if a compact cabinet is easier to place and you can provide a rigid stand, adequate clearance, and an amplifier comfortable with a low-sensitivity 4-ohm load. Neither model has a universal room-size match. Your decision should follow the available floor area, listening distance and level, bass expectations, stand practicality, and the amplifier you will actually use.
The comparison below uses the original A3 and A1 models and the specifications currently shown by Magico. Product pages and launch documents disagree on some figures, so each number is identified by source rather than blended into a single supposedly definitive specification.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision factor | Magico A3 | Magico A1 | What it means in a system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Three-way, four-driver floorstanding loudspeaker | Two-way bookshelf loudspeaker | The A3 occupies the floor by itself; the A1 requires a stand and the stand’s footprint. |
| Drivers | 1.1-inch beryllium tweeter, 6-inch midrange, two 7-inch bass drivers | 1.1-inch beryllium tweeter and one 6.5-inch mid-bass driver | The A3 dedicates drivers to bass, midrange, and treble; the A1 combines bass and midrange duties in one larger driver. |
| Published sensitivity and nominal impedance | 88 dB; 4 ohms | 84 dB; 4 ohms | The A1’s lower published sensitivity makes amplifier capability especially important. Verify the amplifier’s stability into 4 ohms. |
| Published frequency response | 26 Hz–50 kHz on the current product page; 22 Hz–50 kHz in the original launch release | 35 Hz–50 kHz on the current product page | These are manufacturer figures, not guarantees of the bass you will measure in your room. |
| Cabinet dimensions (H × D × W) | 44 × 11 × 9.25 inches | 15.6 × 12 × 8.5 inches | Allow room for toe-in, rear-wall clearance, cable bends, and safe handling. A1 dimensions exclude its stand. |
| Cabinet mass | 110 pounds | 48 pounds | Plan delivery access and a two-person lift for either model; the A3 is substantially harder to move once installed. |
The driver descriptions and published specifications come from Magico’s A3 product page and A1 product page. The A3 launch figure is documented in Magico’s original A3 press release.
What the two designs are trying to do
A3: a dedicated three-way floorstander
The A3 separates the audible range among a beryllium tweeter, a dedicated 6-inch midrange, and two 7-inch bass drivers. That arrangement gives the tower separate radiating area for low frequencies while the midrange driver concentrates on voices and instruments. The cabinet is a 44-inch-tall floorstander, so its acoustic center is already elevated compared with a bookshelf speaker on a low shelf. Magico describes the enclosure as formed from machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum on the current product page.

In practical terms, the A3 is the simpler installation when you want a full-height speaker: there is no external stand to buy, fill, level, or secure. Its demands are physical rather than merely conceptual. You need a clear path to the listening room, enough floor depth for the cabinet and its connections, and a stable surface that will not transmit avoidable vibration. The 110-pound mass also means that final placement should be planned before unpacking rather than improvised by one person.
A1: compact two-way bookshelf architecture
The A1 uses a 1.1-inch beryllium tweeter and one 6.5-inch mid-bass driver in a cabinet only 15.6 inches high. Magico’s historical description calls it a “fully braced aluminum enclosure, beryllium dome tweeter, carbon Nanographene cone, and our renowned elliptical crossover” in the A1 press release. The compact enclosure can be easier to integrate visually and physically, but bookshelf does not mean shelf-mounted: a normal shelf may be too shallow, resonant, or close to a wall for the alignment you want.
A1 owners should budget for a heavy, rigid stand whose top plate supports the cabinet securely and whose height places the tweeter near ear level. The stand becomes part of the speaker’s effective footprint and center of gravity. The 48-pound cabinet is lighter than the A3, yet lifting it onto a tall stand still deserves care, especially if children, pets, or a narrow walkway are present.
Room planning: floor area, height, and listening distance
There is no published room-size cutoff that makes an A3 “too large” or an A1 “too small.” Room dimensions, listening distance, boundaries, furnishings, and desired playback level interact too strongly for a single square-foot rule. Use the physical dimensions and placement flexibility as a planning exercise instead.

Measure the A3 position
- Mark the left and right speaker locations on the floor, including space for the 11-inch cabinet depth and the rear binding-post area.
- Leave a clear route for toe-in. The front baffle should be able to rotate toward the listening position without colliding with furniture.
- Check ceiling height and sight lines. A 44-inch cabinet can dominate a low console or block a screen if the speakers are placed directly beside it.
- Confirm that the floor can support two 110-pound cabinets without rocking. Level the speakers before making fine toe-in adjustments.
- Measure doorways, stairs, elevators, and turns from the delivery point to the final room. The relevant obstacle is the packaged speaker and the people carrying it, not only the installed footprint.
Plan the A1 with its stand
- Choose a stand height that puts the tweeter approximately at seated ear level. The correct height depends on your chair and listening posture, so treat a catalog number as a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Use a top plate that supports the cabinet and permits a secure attachment or non-slip interface. Confirm the stand’s load rating exceeds the 48-pound cabinet mass with a safety margin.
- Include the stand’s base dimensions when checking walkways and furniture clearance. The A1 cabinet’s 8.5-inch width and 12-inch depth do not describe the complete installation.
- Keep the speaker from being pushed flush against a wall or placed in a resonant bookcase. Independent reviewers report positioning A1s well into a room and using substantial stands; those are documented review setups, not mandatory distances for every home.
- Protect the assembly from being knocked forward. A narrow, tall stand can be less stable than a wider design even when its rated load is adequate.
What Hi-Fi?’s A1 review and The Absolute Sound’s A1 review are useful evidence that stand choice and placement can materially affect setup. They should be read as examples of reviewers’ rooms, not as a universal prescription.
Amplifier matching: why the A1 needs more care
Magico currently lists both speakers as 4-ohm designs, but the A1 is listed at 84 dB sensitivity versus 88 dB for the A3. Sensitivity is a reference for acoustic output from a given electrical input; a lower value generally means the amplifier must deliver more power for the same sound-pressure level. The four-decibel difference is not a complete system prediction, because impedance behavior, listening distance, room gain, music crest factor, and amplifier headroom also matter. It is nevertheless a reason to investigate the A1 amplifier pairing rather than assuming any small integrated amplifier will be comfortable.
Questions to ask about your amplifier
- Does the manufacturer specify stable operation into 4-ohm loads, and does it provide a continuous-power figure for that impedance?
- Will you listen from a long distance or at high levels? Those conditions require more voltage swing and current reserve than nearfield listening at moderate volume.
- Does the amplifier enter protection, current limiting, or audible clipping with difficult loads? Protection events are a warning to stop increasing the volume, not a sign that the speaker is defective.
- Can you audition the A1 with your own amplifier or a genuinely comparable one? A showroom amplifier may have very different current capability.
An independent What Hi-Fi? review characterizes the A1’s sensitivity as low and says a capable amplifier is needed. The Hi-Fi News laboratory report measured lower sensitivity than Magico’s current rating. These sources support caution and auditioning; they do not establish one wattage number that is safe or sufficient for every room.

How to interpret the A1 sensitivity figures
Magico’s current A1 product page states 84 dB. The 2019 launch documentation states 85 dB, while the Hi-Fi News report gives three measured results—81.6 dB, 82.4 dB, and 82.3 dB—under its own stated methods. A manufacturer rating and an independent laboratory measurement are not interchangeable. Treat the figures as differently labeled data points, and use the lowest-demanding part of your system design: a stable 4-ohm amplifier, realistic listening levels, and enough headroom to avoid clipping.

Bass extension and the A3 specification discrepancy
The current A3 product page lists a frequency response of 26 Hz–50 kHz. Magico’s original launch release lists 22 Hz–50 kHz. Both figures are preserved here because they are published by Magico for different documents; the older 22 Hz figure should not silently replace the current product-page specification.
The current A1 page lists 35 Hz–50 kHz. On paper, the A3 therefore reaches lower than the A1, which is consistent with its two dedicated 7-inch bass drivers versus the A1’s single 6.5-inch mid-bass driver. Published frequency-response figures normally describe a defined measurement condition, and neither number guarantees the in-room response at your seat. Room modes, boundary reinforcement, listening position, crossover behavior, and volume all change what you hear.
When the difference matters
- Full-range music without a subwoofer: The A3’s lower published extension offers more latitude for organ, synthesized bass, film effects, and large-scale recordings, subject to room acoustics.
- Moderate-volume two-channel listening: The A1 can be appropriate when its compact form and stand placement solve a room problem, provided the amplifier has adequate reserve.
- System expansion: A subwoofer or room-correction system may extend or smooth bass, but the correct crossover and integration depend on the room and electronics. No single compatible configuration is established by the published specifications alone.
Placement and stands: what “bookshelf” really requires
Placing the A1 on a shelf can create three separate problems: the shelf may vibrate, the cabinet may sit too low, and the nearby rear or side boundary may alter bass and imaging. A proper stand moves the speaker into free space and lets you adjust distance, toe-in, and symmetry. It also adds cost, height, and a stability requirement, so the A1 is not automatically the easier option once the complete installation is counted.

The A3 eliminates the external-stand decision but still needs positioning. Its tall baffle and larger bass section can excite room modes differently from the A1. Start with symmetrical left and right locations, then adjust distance from the front wall and toe-in in small increments while listening from the main seat. Make one change at a time and mark the positions so you can return to the best result.

A practical setup sequence
- Place both speakers symmetrically relative to the room’s main listening axis.
- Connect the amplifier with power off and verify polarity at both ends.
- Begin with moderate volume and a familiar recording containing centered vocals and sustained bass.
- Adjust toe-in until the center image is stable without making high frequencies overly prominent.
- Move the pair together in small increments to balance bass evenness and image depth; do not move only one speaker unless correcting a measured asymmetry.
- Recheck stand fasteners, cabinet stability, and cable strain after the final position is chosen.
These steps are starting procedures, not a claim that one position is correct for every room. The independent reviews linked above show why auditioning in your own space is more reliable than importing a reviewer’s exact distances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model fits common room and system priorities?
| Your priority | More natural starting point | Conditions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You want the deepest published bass extension and higher sensitivity | A3 | You have floor space, a safe delivery route, and an amplifier stable into 4 ohms. |
| You cannot accommodate a tall floorstander | A1 | A rigid stand, correct tweeter height, and clearance from shelves and walls are available. |
| You listen loudly or sit far from the speakers | A3 is the less demanding starting point on published sensitivity | Confirm amplifier headroom and audition at your intended level; sensitivity alone does not predict maximum output. |
| You need to move speakers frequently | A1 | Plan safe lifting onto and off the stands; the lighter cabinet is still substantial. |
| You are choosing for a very small room | Neither can be selected by room size alone | Use actual placement clearance, listening distance, bass behavior, and volume goals; obtain an in-room audition if possible. |
| Your amplifier is modest or its 4-ohm rating is unclear | Pause before choosing the A1 | Confirm electrical stability and try the exact amplifier with the speaker before purchase. |
This framework avoids the common shortcut that automatically assigns a bookshelf speaker to a small room and a floorstander to a large room. A small room can still require an A3’s output or bass, while a larger room can favor an A1 when listening levels are moderate and a subwoofer or room treatment is part of the plan.

What the published evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The manufacturer pages establish the driver layouts, dimensions, mass, impedance, sensitivity ratings, and frequency-response figures cited in this article. Independent reviews add practical observations about the A1’s need for a capable amplifier, substantial stands, and room placement, while the Hi-Fi News report supplies laboratory sensitivity measurements made under its own methodology.
Those sources do not establish a universal sonic winner, a maximum room size, a minimum amplifier wattage for every listener, or a guaranteed bass level at your listening seat. No direct listening test was performed for this comparison. A sensible final audition uses the amplifier you own or a model with demonstrably similar 4-ohm capability, music you know well, and enough time to test more than one placement.
Final decision
Select the A3 when its physical scale is acceptable and you value the three-way/four-driver layout, higher published sensitivity, and lower published bass limit. Select the A1 when a compact cabinet solves a placement problem and you are prepared to treat the stand, clearance, and amplifier as essential parts of the system rather than optional accessories. If your choice depends on loud playback, deep bass, or an amplifier near its limits, audition both with the actual electronics before committing; the published specifications narrow the decision, but your room and system finish it.
