Wizards of the Coast has made Universes Beyond a more central part of Magic: The Gathering’s release strategy: beginning in 2025, it said it would spread releases out and make upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases legal in all formats. The company called Foundations the start of a new era for Magic overall—not a formally named “Universes Beyond era”—but its release policy and announced crossover slate mark a significant shift.
What Wizards officially announced
In its October 25, 2024 announcement, Wizards described Foundations as “the start of a whole new era for Magic.” It also said that, beginning in 2025, the release cadence would be spread out more, with a balanced schedule containing both Magic settings and Universes Beyond. The announcement did not give the change a separate official name such as “the dawn of a new era for Universes Beyond.” Read Wizards’ announcement.
The policy change with the clearest implications for players was Wizards’ statement: “Upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases will be legal in all formats.” That is an announced policy, not a guarantee that every individual card is legal in every format at all times. Format legality can depend on the specific card and current rules, so check the applicable format’s current rules before relying on a card for a deck.
How the release strategy has changed
More spacing, not fewer announced crossovers
Wizards said it was responding to concerns about the release cadence by spreading releases out further from 2025 onward. The announcement did not provide a comparable historical schedule or a before-and-after count of releases, so it supports a change in pacing, not a precise claim that the number of products or crossover sets has fallen.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
Magic settings and outside franchises share the schedule
The stated plan combines in-world Magic settings with Universes Beyond. That makes crossovers part of the regular release mix rather than a separate category with its own format restrictions, as reflected in Wizards’ all-format policy for upcoming booster releases.
What the announced 2026 lineup shows
Wizards’ September 30, 2025 lineup announcement named three Universes Beyond releases for 2026. These were official plans at the time of announcement; release windows and product availability can change.

The crossover strategy was already visible in the plans announced in October 2024. Wizards said Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY would arrive on June 13, 2025, and that its Marvel collaboration would continue with Marvel’s Spider-Man in late 2025. Those releases preceded the broader 2026 slate and the policy announcement that upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases would be legal in all formats.

What the business results do—and do not—show
Hasbro’s Q1 2026 investor remarks reported that Lorwyn Eclipsed had become the best-selling Magic premiere set to that point and that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond collaboration had exceeded internal expectations. These are company-reported claims, not independently verified sales measurements; the remarks give no unit or revenue figure for the set-ranking claim. Hasbro’s investor presentations and remarks.
Hasbro also reported that demand for older releases included Avatar: The Last Airbender and FINAL FANTASY. Its remarks said Secrets of Strixhaven had surpassed Lorwyn Eclipsed as the largest Magic premiere set by the time of that reporting. Rankings should therefore be read in their reporting-date context, not as permanent all-time standings.

In the same Q1 2026 remarks, Hasbro reported 13% revenue growth for Wizards of the Coast; that is not a Magic-only growth figure. It also said MagicCon Las Vegas drew more than 23,000 badges and that more than 11,000 Wizards Play Network stores hosted weekly Organized Play events. These figures describe the wider business and play ecosystem; they do not isolate the effect of Universes Beyond.
Quick Recap
What players should take from the announcement
- Universes Beyond is being integrated into the main release schedule. Wizards described a schedule mixing Magic settings and crossover releases.
- Upcoming crossover booster sets were announced as legal in all formats. Check the current legality of individual cards and formats rather than assuming blanket, permanent legality.
- The announced franchise range is broad. The 2026 plans included Marvel, The Hobbit, and Star Trek, with tabletop and Arena availability announced for the latter two.
- Commercial success is supported by company claims, not independently itemized figures here. Hasbro reported strong performance, but the cited remarks do not provide product-level sales totals that would quantify the crossover strategy’s effect.
