Soul Spike is returning in Magic: The Gathering’s five-card 怪異学校 — Strange School Secret Lair drop, marking its first new official printing since it appeared in 2006’s Coldsnap. Wizards of the Coast announced the reprint on October 13, 2026. The drop costs $29.99 in non-foil and $39.99 in foil.
What card is Magic reprinting after 20 years?
The card is Soul Spike, a black instant originally printed in Coldsnap in 2006. The gap between that printing and the new Secret Lair version is roughly 20 years, making this a notable return for a card that had not received another official printing during that period.
A contemporaneous report placed the original card at approximately $18 on the secondary market before the announcement. That figure is a reported snapshot rather than a guaranteed current value: the report does not identify a pricing database, sales sample, or calculation method, and a reprint can change what buyers are willing to pay.

Where the new Soul Spike appears
Soul Spike is included in 怪異学校 — Strange School, one of the Reality Fracture Secret Lair releases. Wizards describes the drop’s presentation as black-and-white artwork by Japanese artists and illustrators paired with mono-black cards, giving the reprint a manga-inspired visual identity rather than simply reproducing the older Coldsnap treatment.

|---|---|---|
| Non-foil | $29.99 | The announced price for the non-foil Strange School drop |
| Foil | $39.99 | The announced price for the foil Strange School drop |
The announcement says the drops launch through the Chaos Vault on MagicSecretLair.com. Those are the stated launch details; the announcement does not promise a particular sales window, print quantity, future scarcity, or appreciation after release.
How the two editions differ
The choice is primarily between a lower entry price and a foil finish intended to appeal to collectors. Both editions contain the same five-card lineup, while the Japanese-inspired black-and-white art is the main presentation feature identified for the release.

There is no reliable basis in the product announcement for predicting which edition will gain value or sell more easily. Liquidity will depend on actual buyer demand, the number of copies sold, condition, and how many owners decide to list their cards after delivery.
What the reprint means for the old Coldsnap copy
The original Coldsnap version remains a distinct printing with its own age, set symbol, and appearance. The Secret Lair card gives players another official version but does not turn the two printings into interchangeable collectibles. Buyers evaluating an older copy should identify the set and condition rather than treating the reported pre-announcement $18 figure as a fixed price.

For players, the practical change is access to a new printing of Soul Spike without having to locate a 2006 copy. For collectors, the appeal is the long-awaited return and the specialized Strange School art. Neither audience should treat the announced retail price as a forecast of secondary-market performance.
Why Wizards can reprint Soul Spike
Wizards’ reprint policy states: “Any card that isn’t on the reserved list may be reprinted.” The policy also says Wizards reprints cards it believes make for enjoyable gameplay and wants players to have an opportunity to play with them. The Secret Lair announcement is therefore consistent with the company’s published position that non-reserved-list cards can receive later printings.

What to check before buying
- Edition: Confirm whether the listing is for the $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil version.
- Contents: Verify that the product is the five-card Strange School drop and includes Soul Spike.
- Seller and condition: For a secondary-market purchase, check whether the item is sealed or opened and how the seller describes card condition.
- Price context: Compare current completed sales rather than relying on the approximate pre-reprint $18 snapshot.
- Release timing: Use the Chaos Vault launch information for the official release channel, and confirm availability when ordering because the announcement does not establish a permanent supply.
The takeaway for players and collectors
Soul Spike is the long-absent Coldsnap card returning in the five-card 怪異学校 — Strange School Secret Lair drop. The official prices are $29.99 for non-foil and $39.99 for foil. The often-quoted approximately $18 value describes a pre-reprint secondary-market snapshot, not a promise about what either the old or new version will be worth after launch.
