Choose the Apple Magic Mouse USB-C if you want the thinnest, simplest Mac companion and prefer swiping or scrolling directly on a touch-sensitive surface. Choose the Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac if you want a shaped body, a conventional scroll wheel, a thumb wheel for horizontal movement, physical shortcut buttons, and extensive per-app customization.

Those are feature-based recommendations, not claims that one mouse is universally more comfortable. The comparison below uses the current Magic Mouse USB-C, introduced in 2024, and Logitech’s specific MX Master 3S for Mac—not the MX Master family in general.

The two exact models in this comparison

Apple Magic Mouse USB-C

Apple’s current model is the Magic Mouse with a USB-C charging port, listed as introduced in 2024. Its low-profile shell has a Multi-Touch surface for gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents. It connects wirelessly over Bluetooth and pairs automatically with a Mac.

Older Magic Mouse units with a Lightning connector still appear in older Apple support material. Do not use those specifications when shopping for the current USB-C model: the port, included cable and model year discussed here are specific to the 2024 version.

Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac

The Logitech product compared here is the MX Master 3S for Mac. “MX Master” by itself can refer to several generations and editions, so compatibility, buttons and dimensions should not be inferred from the family name alone. The 3S for Mac supports Bluetooth Low Energy and Logitech’s Logi Bolt receiver system; a receiver is not listed among the box contents.

Logitech also documents an MX Master 4 for Business that supports macOS 12 or later at release and carries a 70-day battery estimate. The available information does not establish a current consumer Mac edition, retail availability or a direct replacement relationship with the MX Master 3S for Mac, so it is not scored as a third option here.

How the interaction feels in practice

Magic Mouse: a touch surface instead of a wheel

The Magic Mouse’s upper shell acts as a Multi-Touch surface. A finger swipe can move between web pages, and a finger movement scrolls through documents without a separate wheel. This gives the mouse a minimal appearance and keeps the common Mac gestures close to the pointer.

The trade-off is that the surface provides fewer tactile controls. If you routinely want a distinct middle-click, a dedicated horizontal wheel or several thumb shortcuts, those functions are not presented as physical controls on the Magic Mouse specification. The Apple documentation reviewed emphasizes its built-in gestures and pairing rather than a button-remapping system.

MX Master 3S: tactile controls and two-dimensional scrolling

The MX Master 3S for Mac uses a conventional main wheel with Logitech’s MagSpeed system. Logitech describes two modes: ratcheted, line-by-line movement and free-spin movement for moving rapidly through long pages or timelines. Logitech quotes a maximum MagSpeed rate of up to 1,000 lines per second; that is a product claim, not an independent measurement.

A separate thumb wheel handles horizontal movement. It is useful for wide spreadsheets, editing timelines, design canvases and documents that are awkward to pan with a touch gesture. The mouse also has a thumb-area gesture button and additional physical buttons whose assignments can be changed in Logitech Options+.

Which scrolling method suits you?

  • Choose the Magic Mouse approach if you already use trackpad-style swipes and want one continuous surface with no wheel to clean or accidentally bump.
  • Choose the MX Master approach if you prefer a physical detent, free-spin acceleration, horizontal scrolling or buttons you can locate by touch.
  • For mixed Mac and Windows use, physical controls may transfer more predictably between systems, while the Magic Mouse’s gestures depend more heavily on the operating system recognizing its surface.

Shape, dimensions and hand-fit considerations

The Magic Mouse is 2.16 cm high, measures 5.71 by 11.35 cm in the listed footprint and weighs 99 g. Its shallow profile can fit easily beside a laptop and leaves little housing above the desk. Some users like that unobtrusive shape; others prefer a mouse that supports more of the palm.

The MX Master 3S for Mac is listed at 124.9 mm high by 84.3 mm wide by 51 mm deep and 141 g. Logitech describes its body as contoured and says that design places the arm in a more natural posture. That is Logitech’s design claim, not independent comparative ergonomics evidence. A larger, heavier body can feel steadier to one person and cumbersome to another, depending on hand size, grip and desk space.

Neither set of dimensions predicts comfort for every reader. Before buying, consider whether you use a fingertip, claw or palm grip, whether your hand can reach the thumb controls without stretching, and whether you frequently carry the mouse with a laptop. The available sources do not include a population study or controlled comfort test that ranks the two shapes.

Apple Magic Mouse - White Multi-Touch Surface
  • Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
  • It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

Charging, battery life and the interruption trade-off

Magic Mouse USB-C

Apple estimates “about a month or more” between charges. The current mouse charges through USB-C and includes a USB-C charge cable. Apple Support states that the Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging, and the charging port is on the underside. Consequently, a depleted battery requires a pause or a switch to another pointing device until charging is complete; the cable cannot turn it into a wired mouse during that period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MX Master 3S for Mac

Logitech estimates up to 70 days from a full charge and says a one-minute charge can provide three hours of use. Both figures depend on usage and conditions and are not a comparative runtime test. The mouse also charges over USB-C.

The documentation reviewed does not confirm whether the MX Master 3S for Mac can operate while its cable is connected. Do not assume that a USB-C cable automatically provides uninterrupted wired operation. If avoiding every charging interruption is essential, verify that behavior in the current manual or with Logitech support before purchase.

Practical charging choice

  • Magic Mouse: longer intervals may be adequate if you remember to charge before the battery is empty, but the underside port makes an emergency charge disruptive.
  • MX Master 3S: Logitech’s quick-charge estimate is useful when the battery is low, yet it remains a maker estimate and does not answer the wired-use question.

Buttons, gestures and software requirements

What works on the Magic Mouse without extra software

Apple’s current specification describes the Multi-Touch gestures and automatic Bluetooth pairing. The basic swiping and scrolling experience is therefore centered on macOS support for the mouse rather than a separate configuration utility. The reviewed material does not describe a comparable layer of per-application button assignments for the Magic Mouse.

What Options+ adds to the MX Master 3S

Logitech lists seven customizable buttons on the MX Master 3S for Mac. Logitech’s setup guide says Logitech Options+ is required to enable the gesture button and Mac back/forward buttons. Within Options+, you can assign different actions to buttons, create application-specific settings and use Flow to move between computers.

  • Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)

Options+ also exposes the wheel’s ratchet and free-spin behavior and the gesture mappings described in the setup guide. These capabilities are a major reason to choose the Logitech if you work in several applications and want one button to behave differently in a browser, creative tool, spreadsheet or code editor.

The software requirement is a real trade-off. The mouse remains a pointer and scroll device without Options+, but the advertised Mac-specific gestures, back/forward actions and per-app customization depend on installing Logitech’s software and allowing it to run. If you want a mouse that is largely configured by macOS itself, the Magic Mouse has the simpler setup model.

Connectivity and switching among devices

Magic Mouse pairing

The current Magic Mouse connects over Bluetooth and Apple says it pairs automatically with a Mac. That suits a single-Mac desk where you want to avoid a receiver occupying a USB port. The source material does not specify a multi-device switching count for this model.

MX Master 3S connections

The MX Master 3S for Mac supports Bluetooth Low Energy and a compatible Logi Bolt receiver. Logitech says it can connect to and switch among up to three devices. Bluetooth is convenient for a MacBook or a desktop without spare ports; a receiver can be useful when you want a dedicated wireless link or when Bluetooth pairing is restricted by a managed computer. The receiver is not listed in the box contents, so account for that if you specifically need Logi Bolt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flow is a software feature rather than a radio standard. It uses Options+ to move the pointer and, where configured, copy content between computers. It is most relevant to a desk with multiple Macs or a Mac alongside another supported computer; it is not necessary for ordinary one-device use.

Setup steps for a Mac

Set up the Magic Mouse USB-C

  1. Charge the mouse with the supplied USB-C cable before first use or when its battery is low.
  2. Turn the mouse on using its power switch.
  3. On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
  4. Wait for the Magic Mouse to appear, then select it and complete pairing. Apple describes automatic pairing for the current model, so the exact confirmation prompt can vary with macOS version.
  5. Open System Settings > Mouse to adjust available tracking, scrolling and gesture behavior exposed by your macOS release.

If the mouse does not appear, turn it off and on, make sure it is charged, and remove an old Magic Mouse entry before trying to pair again. Do not use a Lightning cable or Lightning-era instructions as proof that the current USB-C model is defective; they apply to older hardware.

Set up the MX Master 3S for Mac over Bluetooth

  1. Charge the mouse through USB-C and switch it on.
  2. Press the device-selection button and choose an available channel.
  3. On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, select the MX Master 3S for Mac and finish pairing.
  4. Install Logitech Options+ if you want gestures, Mac back/forward buttons, per-app assignments or Flow.
  5. In Options+, select the mouse, assign button actions, choose application profiles and configure the wheel’s ratchet or free-spin behavior.

Set up with a Logi Bolt receiver

  1. Confirm that your receiver is a compatible Logi Bolt unit; it is not listed as included with the MX Master 3S for Mac.
  2. Connect the receiver to the Mac directly or through a compatible hub or adapter.
  3. Turn on the mouse, select the channel you want to use and follow Logitech’s pairing instructions in Options+ if the mouse is not already linked.
  4. Keep Bluetooth available as an alternative channel if you plan to move between computers.

Which mouse is right for specific Mac users?

Choose Magic Mouse USB-C when simplicity and gestures are the priority

  • You want a low-profile mouse that visually matches a minimal Mac setup.
  • You naturally use trackpad-style swipes and surface scrolling.
  • You primarily use one Mac and prefer automatic Bluetooth pairing over a receiver.
  • You do not need seven remappable buttons, application profiles or a thumb wheel.
  • You can avoid a crisis charge by charging before the battery is empty.

Choose MX Master 3S for Mac when control and customization matter

  • You prefer a contoured, heavier mouse and physical controls.
  • You scroll through long pages, spreadsheets or timelines and want both free-spin and ratcheted wheel modes.
  • You frequently pan horizontally and would use a thumb wheel.
  • You want seven customizable buttons, Mac back/forward actions or application-specific mappings.
  • You switch among as many as three computers and can use Bluetooth or a Logi Bolt receiver.
  • You are willing to install Options+ for the full feature set.

Think twice before choosing based only on comfort claims

Shape and weight are measurable, but comfort is personal. The available manufacturer material does not establish that the MX Master 3S prevents pain, that the Magic Mouse causes it, or that either is ergonomically superior for a particular hand. If you have an existing wrist or hand condition, prioritize advice from a qualified clinician and, where possible, a return policy that lets you try the shape safely.

Price, stock and what can change

At the time of the October 2026 review, Logitech’s US MX Master 3S for Mac page displayed a $119.99 list price and “Sold Out Temporarily.” That is a time- and region-specific listing state, not a permanent street price or a reason to assume the product is discontinued. Check the current product page and local retailers before treating either figure as a purchase decision.

No current Magic Mouse USB-C price was established in the product specification used for this comparison. Avoid comparing an unverified sale price with Logitech’s historical listing. Taxes, currency, promotions and stock can change independently of the hardware specifications.

A decision checklist before you buy

  1. Confirm the connector. For Apple’s current model, look for Magic Mouse USB-C and the 2024 specification; do not accidentally buy or compare a Lightning-generation listing.
  2. Choose your primary input style. Surface gestures favor the Magic Mouse; tactile wheel, thumb wheel and buttons favor the MX Master 3S.
  3. Measure your practical desk use. Consider palm support, hand size, grip, travel weight and whether a 141 g body or a 99 g low-profile body fits your routine.
  4. Plan for charging. The Magic Mouse cannot be used while charging. Treat Logitech’s 70-day and one-minute figures as estimates, and verify wired operation if that feature is essential.
  5. Decide whether software is acceptable. Options+ is needed for the MX Master 3S’s gesture button, Mac back/forward functions, app-specific assignments and Flow.
  6. Count your computers. The Logitech can switch among up to three devices; the reviewed Magic Mouse specification does not state an equivalent count.
  7. Check current stock and regional pricing. The only Logitech listing snapshot available here was temporary and may no longer match the page you see.

Bottom-line recommendation

For a Mac user who wants the fewest decisions, automatic Bluetooth pairing and a touch surface for familiar swipes, the Magic Mouse USB-C is the more direct fit. Its underside charging port is the important operational compromise.

For a Mac user who values a shaped body, physical scrolling, horizontal movement, shortcut buttons and deep customization, the MX Master 3S for Mac offers the broader control set. Its advantages depend partly on installing Options+, and its battery and charging figures remain Logitech estimates rather than independently tested results.
