Choose Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad Air if you want a floating cantilever hinge, a glass trackpad, a 14-key function row and USB-C pass-through charging. Choose Logitech’s Combo Touch if you need a keyboard that detaches while the protective case stays on, an adjustable kickstand, backlit keys and built-in Apple Pencil storage.
Neither is a universal winner. The right case depends on how often you type, whether you use the iPad as a tablet without removing its case, where you work, and whether the iPad’s USB-C port must remain available while charging. Confirm the exact screen size and generation before ordering: these are model-specific cases.
Quick answer: which iPad Air keyboard case fits your use?
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A laptop-like floating screen and clean hinge | Magic Keyboard | Its cantilever design holds the iPad above the base and offers multiple viewing angles. |
| Removing the keyboard without removing the case | Combo Touch | The keyboard detaches while the form-fitting protective case remains on the iPad. |
| Charging while using the iPad’s USB-C port | Magic Keyboard | The keyboard has a USB-C charging connector that passes power through to the iPad, leaving the iPad’s own port available for another accessory. |
| A rear stand for drawing, reading or video | Combo Touch | Its flexible kickstand supports tablet modes, although it needs space behind the iPad. |
| Carrying Apple Pencil with the iPad | Combo Touch | Logitech’s listing identifies storage for Apple Pencil while the case remains attached. |
| A dedicated row of iPadOS shortcuts | Magic Keyboard | Apple lists a 14-key function row. |
The published specifications do not establish a controlled winner for typing speed, key feel, latency, durability, reliability or long-term comfort. Treat those as personal-fit questions rather than proven performance differences.
Check compatibility before you compare features
Both products are sold in separate 11-inch and 13-inch versions. A case that matches the screen size can still be wrong for the generation, so check the model information on your iPad before paying.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Magic Keyboard compatibility
Apple’s current US listings identify the 11-inch version for iPad Air models with M2, M3 and M4, as well as the fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air models. The cited 13-inch listing covers the M2, M3 and M4 iPad Air. Apple specifies iPadOS 18.3 or later for the current Magic Keyboard listings.
Combo Touch compatibility
Logitech’s cited US listing identifies 11-inch and 13-inch versions for M2, M3 and M4 iPad Air models and for the fifth-generation iPad Air. Do not infer support for an older 11-inch model merely because the diagonal measurement appears similar.
How to verify your iPad
- Open Settings > General > About and note the model name, generation or chip description, and model number.
- Confirm whether your display is the 11-inch or 13-inch class. Select the matching case size; do not use a 13-inch case on an 11-inch iPad or vice versa.
- For Magic Keyboard, open Settings > General > Software Update and install iPadOS 18.3 or later if your model supports it.
- At checkout, compare the complete compatibility text with your model number. Keep the packaging and receipt until the keyboard, camera opening, magnets and Smart Connector all line up correctly.
Design and viewing: floating hinge versus detachable stand
Magic Keyboard’s cantilever approach
The Magic Keyboard uses a floating cantilever arrangement. Magnets hold the iPad above the keyboard deck, and the hinge lets you adjust the viewing angle. Folded, the keyboard acts as front and back protection rather than as a separate shell and detachable keyboard.
This design keeps the footprint visually close to a compact laptop and puts the display in a raised position. It is a good match when the iPad normally stays attached for writing, email, spreadsheets or web work. The cited Apple page does not describe a rear kickstand or a keyboard-removal mode, so it is not the better choice if you frequently want a fully exposed tablet while leaving a case on the device.
Combo Touch’s case-and-kickstand approach
Combo Touch is a form-fitting protective case with a flexible rear kickstand and a detachable keyboard. You can leave the case on, fold the stand out for viewing or drawing, and remove the keyboard when touch input is more convenient.
The stand extends behind the tablet. In a hands-on comparison, one Tom’s Guide reviewer found that rear extension consumed more space and could be awkward on an airplane. That is one reviewer’s observation, not a universal measurement or a controlled comfort result, but it is a practical warning for tray tables, narrow desks and crowded seats. Measure the available depth where you work if those spaces matter.
Keyboard and trackpad differences
Magic Keyboard controls
Apple lists scissor-switch keys with 1 mm of travel, a large glass trackpad and a 14-key function row. The function row provides a dedicated strip of system controls instead of requiring every shortcut to be reached with a modifier key. The glass surface is the most clearly differentiated trackpad material named in the two listings.

Those are specifications and feature descriptions, not evidence that the Magic Keyboard produces faster typing or fewer errors. Your result will depend on hand position, key spacing, software and personal preference.
Combo Touch controls
Logitech describes a backlit keyboard and a precise trackpad; Apple’s store listing describes it as full-size and backlit with adjustable scissor keys. Backlighting is useful in dim rooms, while the detachable design lets you use the trackpad and keys only when needed.
The published material does not provide a common test of travel, actuation force, typing speed or trackpad latency for both products. If key feel is your deciding factor, try the exact size in a retailer with a return policy rather than treating the feature descriptions as a benchmark.
Charging, connectors and port availability
Magic Keyboard pass-through charging
The Magic Keyboard has a USB-C connector on the keyboard. Apple says it can charge the iPad Air through the keyboard while freeing the iPad’s own USB-C port for another accessory, such as storage, a display adapter or an audio interface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is a concrete advantage when you need wired data or display access while the battery is charging. The cited description establishes charging pass-through; it does not establish that the keyboard’s connector provides data input/output, so do not treat it as a second general-purpose USB-C data port.
Combo Touch Smart Connector connection
Apple’s store listing identifies Smart Connector connectivity for the Combo Touch. The connector supplies the keyboard connection without a separate Bluetooth-pairing step in normal use. The listing does not identify a USB-C pass-through charging port on the keyboard, so plan to charge through the iPad’s own port.
If you routinely connect a hub, external drive or monitor while charging, map that workflow before choosing Combo Touch. You may need a hub that combines power delivery and accessories, whereas the Magic Keyboard’s separate charging connector leaves the iPad port physically free.

Tablet use, protection and Apple Pencil storage
When Combo Touch is the more flexible tablet case
Combo Touch is designed for mode changes. Detach the keyboard for reading, sketching, games or video while the protective case remains on. Fold out the kickstand for hands-free viewing, or close it for transport. Logitech’s listing also says there is space to store Apple Pencil with the case attached.

That combination makes sense for an iPad Air that alternates between laptop-style work and handheld tablet use. Verify the Pencil model and the exact case variant at purchase; the cited listing confirms storage space but does not establish compatibility with every Apple Pencil generation or accessory.
When Magic Keyboard’s protection is enough
The Magic Keyboard folds into a case that protects the iPad’s front and back while attached. Its floating hinge is convenient when the iPad almost always stays on a desk or lap in keyboard mode. There is no Pencil-storage feature identified on the cited Apple Magic Keyboard page, so plan for a separate Pencil sleeve, magnetic holder or bag pocket if you carry one.
Portability and working in tight spaces
Both products add bulk compared with using the iPad alone, but the supplied listings do not provide a directly comparable weight for both sizes. Apple’s store listing gives the 13-inch Combo Touch as 685.9 g, with dimensions of 28.5 × 22.58 × 1.51 cm and a one-year limited hardware warranty. Those figures apply to that listed 13-inch version and should not be generalized to the 11-inch model or used as an unstated comparison with Magic Keyboard.
For a tray table or a shallow lap desk, the key question is not only mass. Magic Keyboard’s cantilever hinge keeps the support under the keyboard base. Combo Touch’s kickstand needs clear space behind the iPad, which can reduce usable depth even when the case itself fits. For a backpack, also account for the detachable Combo Touch keyboard: removing it can make tablet use easier, but it is another piece to keep track of.
Price context: what the listings showed
Prices change by size, seller, stock and time. The following figures were observed in US listings accessed October 13, 2026; they are not guaranteed current prices or recurring promotions.
| Product and size | Observed listing price | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, 11-inch | $269 | Apple US product page at the stated access time. |
| Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, 13-inch | $319 | Apple US product page at the stated access time. |
| Logitech Combo Touch for iPad Air | $199.99–$229.99 | Range shown on Logitech’s US page; the upper figure corresponded to its 13-inch tier in the cited listing. |
| Logitech Combo Touch, 13-inch | $229.95 | Price shown in an Apple Store listing for that variant at the stated access time. |
Do not assume every 11-inch or 13-inch SKU carries the same price. Before ordering, check that the seller, size, generation and return terms all refer to the exact case you need.

Choose by your daily workflow
Choose Magic Keyboard when these statements are true
- You want the iPad to float above the keyboard in a laptop-like setup.
- You prefer a glass trackpad and want Apple’s 14-key function row.
- You charge frequently while using a wired accessory, so pass-through charging and a free iPad USB-C port matter.
- You usually keep the keyboard attached and do not need to remove it for tablet sessions.
- You are buying for a supported iPad Air size and generation and can run iPadOS 18.3 or later.
Choose Combo Touch when these statements are true
- You want to detach the keyboard while retaining a protective case.
- You need a kickstand for drawing, reading or video and have enough rear depth for it.
- You prefer a backlit keyboard and a full-size layout with adjustable scissor keys.
- You carry Apple Pencil and want storage integrated into the case.
- You are comfortable charging through the iPad and do not require a keyboard USB-C pass-through port.
Consider a different setup when neither fits
If you need a very shallow footprint, neither design may be ideal: Combo Touch’s stand occupies space behind the iPad, while Magic Keyboard does not detach. If you mostly hold the iPad in one hand, compare the weight and bulk of the exact case sizes in person. If you need a specialized desktop keyboard, a separate keyboard and a lighter tablet case can be more adaptable than either integrated option.
Installation and first-use checklist
After buying either case
- Inspect the packaging label for the exact 11-inch or 13-inch size and supported generation.
- Back up the iPad before installing a system update or changing your daily setup.
- Remove debris from the iPad’s Smart Connector area and the case connector contacts.
- Attach the iPad squarely. Confirm that the camera cutout, speakers, buttons and magnets align before applying pressure.
- Open a notes document and test every letter key, modifier, trackpad click and gesture you use regularly.
- Test charging. With Magic Keyboard, connect power to the keyboard’s USB-C port and confirm that the iPad reports charging. With Combo Touch, connect power to the iPad and verify the keyboard remains available.
- If a key, trackpad or connector fails, detach and reattach once, restart the iPad, and check for an iPadOS update. If the problem remains, stop bending or forcing the connector and use the seller’s return or warranty process.
Magic Keyboard-specific checks
- Adjust the cantilever hinge through your normal writing and viewing angles.
- Plug a cable or hub into the iPad’s USB-C port while charging through the keyboard to confirm that your accessory actually works; pass-through charging does not by itself guarantee data support on the keyboard connector.
Combo Touch-specific checks
- Detach and reattach the keyboard several times to learn the magnetic alignment point.
- Extend the kickstand on the desk, lap surface and travel surface you use most. Check that the rear leg does not overhang an edge.
- Store Apple Pencil in the provided space and confirm that the case closes without pressing the iPad’s buttons.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by screen size alone
“11-inch iPad Air” is not a complete compatibility check. Generations can share a diagonal measurement while changing camera placement, connector alignment or body dimensions. Use the model information in Settings and the manufacturer’s full compatibility list.
Assuming detachable means unprotected
Combo Touch’s point is that the keyboard detaches while its protective case remains. If you remove the entire case instead, you lose the mode-switching benefit and increase the chance of using the bare iPad when you intended protection.
Expecting the keyboard USB-C port to be a data hub
Apple identifies the Magic Keyboard connector as pass-through charging. The cited material does not promise data I/O, so connect data accessories to the iPad’s own port.
Using price as a proxy for typing quality
The available specifications do not include a controlled typing comparison. Price can reflect size, seller and included design features; it does not prove faster typing, greater durability or better long-term comfort.
Ignoring the space behind the kickstand
Combo Touch can fit the iPad’s footprint and still fail to fit the workspace because the stand extends rearward. Test the full open depth on a plane tray, narrow café table or shallow lap desk before committing.

What is not established by the available specifications
There is no cited controlled side-by-side test for typing speed, key-feel preference, trackpad latency, durability, connection reliability or long-term comfort. The listed 1 mm key travel, 14-key function row, backlighting, trackpad descriptions and connector types explain what each product offers; they do not rank one keyboard objectively.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Likewise, the 685.9 g weight and 28.5 × 22.58 × 1.51 cm dimensions apply to the listed 13-inch Combo Touch only. They cannot be used to claim that every Combo Touch, or either product in every size, is lighter, thinner or better built.
Bottom line
Pick Magic Keyboard for a mostly attached, laptop-style iPad Air with a floating hinge, glass trackpad, 14-key function row and the option to charge through the keyboard while keeping the iPad USB-C port free. Pick Combo Touch for a protected iPad that regularly changes roles: keyboard attached for work, keyboard removed for tablet use, kickstand extended for viewing, and Apple Pencil stored with the case. Verify the exact size, generation, operating-system requirement and current seller price before checkout.
