There is no Adobe-published traffic, sales, or order-count threshold that tells every Magento store when to move from VPS to dedicated hosting. Upgrade when sustained measurements show that your current plan cannot meet performance or reliability needs—and only after checking whether the real bottleneck is server capacity, application code, extensions, database queries, cache, or search.

For Magento Dedicated Hosting vs VPS, compare the resources and operating responsibilities each provider actually includes, not just the plan name. The right time to change your eCommerce server depends on your store’s workload, required architecture, and ability to manage it.

What “dedicated hosting” means—and why the label is not enough

In Adobe’s reference architecture, the described servers are physical, non-virtualized machines whose resources are not shared with other users. Hosting companies may use “dedicated” differently, so confirm exactly what is isolated: CPU, memory, storage, database, or some combination. Also ask whether the service is managed. Adobe notes that a provider specializing in high-performance Commerce hosting may recommend a different setup that is equally or more effective for a merchant’s requirements (Adobe’s reference architecture, updated August 19, 2026).

A VPS is virtualized hosting with resources allocated to a virtual server. The label alone does not tell you how much usable CPU or memory is available, how storage or database performance behaves under load, or what happens when you approach a plan limit. Ask for those specifics before comparing a VPS with a dedicated plan.

When to upgrade your eCommerce server

Consider a change when monitoring shows repeated resource exhaustion, unacceptable response times during normal or predictable peak demand, or an inability to operate the current architecture safely. These are diagnostic signs, not a universal upgrade rule: Adobe’s reviewed guidance does not publish a general VPS-to-dedicated threshold. Its scaled architecture guidance recommends using performance monitoring to assess resource needs (Adobe’s scaled architecture documentation).

  • Repeated resource pressure: CPU, memory, storage, or database limits are regularly reached and coincide with slowdowns or failed work.
  • Performance problems under expected demand: the store degrades during ordinary use or predictable peaks that the business needs to support.
  • Operational or architectural limits: the current plan cannot safely support the required service layout, scaling approach, or recovery arrangements.

Before moving to a larger server, identify the bottleneck. Slow requests may come from application code, extensions, database queries, cache configuration, search, or the hosting allocation itself. A server-class change will not necessarily fix problems caused elsewhere in the stack.

How to compare a VPS with dedicated hosting

Compare options against the same workload and service scope. A lower-cost VPS and a dedicated server are not comparable if one includes managed monitoring, backups, and database services while the other leaves those tasks to your team.

What to compare Questions to ask
Resource isolation and limits Which CPU, memory, and storage resources are reserved or shared? What are the plan limits, and how are they enforced?
Storage and database performance What storage and database resources are included? Can the provider explain how they are provisioned for the expected workload?
Scaling and architecture Can the setup scale vertically or separate web and service tiers? Which components can be moved or expanded independently?
Commerce services Are cache, search, database, and queue services included, configured, and maintained? Which services remain your responsibility?
Monitoring and support Who monitors the application and infrastructure, responds to incidents, and handles security and software maintenance?
Backup, recovery, and availability How often are backups made, how are they restored, and what high-availability or recovery arrangements are included?
Compatibility and total cost Does the stack support your specific Commerce release? What is the total cost for the service level and operational work you require?

These comparison criteria reflect Adobe’s system, architecture, software, and operations guidance; they are not a vendor-neutral performance benchmark. Adobe’s System Requirements page, updated August 11, 2026, lists tested dependency combinations by Commerce version and says only combinations in its tables are supported. Verify the target release rather than assuming a provider’s default stack is compatible.

Make sure the whole Commerce stack is supported

Magento Commerce is not just a web server. Adobe’s production software recommendations include PHP, Nginx with PHP-FPM, MySQL, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch. For multiple servers or planned scaling, Adobe also recommends Varnish, Redis for sessions, and a separate Redis instance for the default cache (Adobe’s software recommendations, updated March 16, 2026).

Confirm who installs, configures, patches, monitors, and troubleshoots each required component. A plan that provides more compute but omits services or management your store needs may not solve the underlying problem.

What changes when you move to dedicated hosting

Dedicated resources can address a real capacity or isolation constraint, but they do not remove the work of running Commerce. With an on-premises deployment, Adobe’s prerequisites call for hosts that meet system requirements, advance testing of load balancing when using multiple web nodes, and backups at multiple points so the system can be rolled back (Adobe’s on-premises installation prerequisites, updated June 1, 2026).

Before committing, establish who is responsible for deployment, maintenance, updates, security, monitoring, incident response, backup, and recovery. Include those responsibilities in the cost comparison: a dedicated server that requires more staff time or additional services may cost more overall than its headline hosting price suggests.

VPS and dedicated hosting are not the only choices

Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure is a separate operating model, not simply another VPS or dedicated-server plan. Adobe describes pre-provisioned services and a Git-based build and deployment workflow; infrastructure and availability features depend on the plan (Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure overview, updated September 18, 2026; cloud architecture, updated September 1, 2026).

Adobe’s documented scaled-architecture example uses three web nodes, each with 8 CPU and 16 GB RAM, plus three service nodes, each with 8 CPU and 32 GB RAM. This is an example for Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure—not a general Magento sizing recommendation or a trigger for leaving a VPS. Adobe says scaled architecture is available to Pro 48 cluster accounts or greater; check the current plan and eligibility details in its scaled architecture documentation.

A practical decision and migration checklist

  1. Measure the current system. Review monitoring for CPU, memory, storage, database, and response-time constraints during ordinary traffic and expected peaks. Connect each constraint to its effect on shoppers or store operations.
  2. Find the cause. Check application code, extensions, database queries, cache, search, and the hosting allocation before deciding that a different server class is the fix.
  3. Verify compatibility. Check the target Commerce release’s supported software combinations in Adobe’s System Requirements. For an upgrade, review Adobe’s upgrade prerequisites, updated April 28, 2026.
  4. Compare the complete service. Confirm resource limits, architecture options, included services, monitoring, support, backups, recovery, and who operates each component.
  5. Plan and test the move. Check target-version requirements, update software, verify the supported search service, test load balancing if multiple web nodes are involved, and make restorable backups before migration or upgrade. Adobe’s on-premises prerequisites cover host requirements, load-balancer testing, and backup planning.
