Magento 2’s price index is precomputed database data that helps catalog queries find prices for the relevant website and customer group. It is not the source of every price input, and it is not the same thing as full-page cache. Reindexing can take a long time because Magento must account for catalog size and combinations of websites, customer groups, and—in Adobe Commerce B2B setups—shared catalogs, as well as the database work needed to build the index.
What the Magento price index does
The catalog_product_price indexer builds derived pricing lookup data for catalog use. A useful way to think about the flow is: product pricing inputs are saved in catalog data; the indexer calculates values for relevant catalog contexts; storefront catalog work can then use those precomputed values rather than calculate every price from scratch for every query.
The index is an aid to catalog pricing, not a complete account of every price displayed on every page. Product type, customer context, price scope, tax and display settings, options, and installed extensions can all affect the path from stored product data to the price a shopper sees.
Which data is stored in the price index?
A documented schema reference for catalog_product_index_price lists the following columns. It is a third-party documentation mirror, so treat it as a guide and check the database schema for the Magento or Adobe Commerce release actually installed.

Customer-group context for the indexed row. |
website_id |
Website context for the indexed row. |
tax_class_id |
The product’s tax-class identifier. |
price |
A price value recorded in the index. |
final_price |
The calculated final-price value represented in the index. |
min_price |
The minimum price value represented in the index. |
max_price |
The maximum price value represented in the index. |
tier_price |
A tier-price value represented in the index. |
In that schema reference, the primary key combines product entity, customer group, and website. That key helps explain why adding catalog contexts can increase indexing work: the index is not simply one universal price row per product. Exact table names, columns, and key definitions may differ by release or customization.
Product price inputs remain distinct from these derived rows. Adobe’s pricing API documentation distinguishes base, special, and tier price operations; for example, it notes a global price-scope constraint for special-price scheduling. Magento core pricing code in the mutable 2.4-develop branch shows base-price calculation applying tier and special prices before computing final price, with options applied in the cited path. Verify such behavior against the installed release and its product-type modules rather than assuming a development branch describes every deployment.

Why price reindexing can be slow
Catalog contexts multiply the work
Adobe identifies the combination of products, websites, customer groups, and B2B shared catalogs as a reason Product Price and Catalog Rule indexing can take a long time. Magento needs to build pricing data for relevant contexts, so a shop with more websites and customer-group or shared-catalog combinations can require more work than product count alone suggests.

Adobe says excluding websites from customer groups or shared catalogs can reduce Product Price and Catalog Rule index time where those exclusions fit the business rules. This is a configuration choice, not a safe generic speed-up: it changes which customer group can be served on which website.

Batch size and temporary-table memory matter
Adobe documents configurable batches for catalog_product_price and says the batches use temporary MEMORY tables. In connection with a related memory error, Adobe advises considering a larger innodb_buffer_pool_size or a smaller batch size. The right setting depends on the actual catalog and database capacity; changing it without measuring can simply move pressure elsewhere.
Adobe’s documented example involved 10 websites, 10 store groups, 20 store views, 300 tier prices, and about 40,000 products, including 254 configurables. In that particular workload, reducing the batch size from 5,000 to 1,000 was associated with a change from about four hours to less than two hours. The page also shows 5,000 as the default batch size in its documented configuration. These are figures from Adobe’s example and documentation context, not a general benchmark or a guarantee for another installation; verify the applicable default for the deployed version.

Read and write behavior can affect operations
For supported indexers, Adobe describes table switching: Magento builds data in separate tables while reads continue using the active table. For Product Price, the guide names catalog_product_index_price and catalog_product_index_price_replica. This approach can avoid some read/write collisions, but it requires additional storage.

It warns that Update on Save can lose data if changes occur during a full reindex. Confirm that table switching applies to the installed release and configuration before changing indexer mode.

Local workload and custom code also count
Product-type mix, extensions that affect pricing or indexing, customer-group setup, concurrent imports, cron scheduling, database capacity, locks, and storage can all influence a measured run. General documentation cannot identify the cause of a particular shop’s delay; use local status, logs, and database measurements to narrow it down.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update on Save versus Update by Schedule
Magento’s indexer module documents both modes. The operational choice depends on how quickly price changes must appear, whether cron is reliable, and whether the deployed configuration uses table switching.
| Consideration | Update on Save | Update by Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| When index updates are triggered | By the save/update workflow. | Through scheduled processing that relies on cron. |
| Operational concern | Can add work to catalog writes; Adobe warns of possible data loss if changes occur during a full reindex for the relevant table-switching setup. | Depends on healthy cron processing and scheduled indexer work. |
| Table-switching guidance | Adobe warns against this mode for indexers using the described table-switching approach. | Adobe recommends this mode for indexers using table switching. |
| Freshness trade-off | Update timing is tied to saves. | Update timing depends on scheduled processing; exact delay depends on the installation’s scheduling and workload. |
Use the mode supported by the installed version and configuration, and account for the store’s update patterns. Changing modes without confirming cron health or table-switching behavior can create a different operational problem rather than solve a slow run.
Price index and full-page cache solve different problems
| Mechanism | What it holds or does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Price index | Derived database pricing lookup data built by the price indexer for catalog use. | It is not a rendered page response or the only store of product pricing inputs. |
| Full-page cache | Server-side cached page content that can be reused for public content. | Cleaning it does not recalculate price-index rows. |
Adobe describes Magento’s page-cache library as including a simple reverse proxy and recommends Varnish. Its page-caching guidance cautions against making catalog, product, and CMS pages uncacheable because doing so harms performance. Cache cleaning, such as bin/magento cache:clean, and index reindexing are separate operations: clearing page cache is not a substitute for rebuilding price data.
Quick Recap
How to investigate a slow price reindex
- Record the deployment context. Note Magento or Adobe Commerce version, edition, database version, approximate catalog size, product-type mix, website and customer-group counts, and any shared-catalog setup.
- Check indexer state and mode. Run
bin/magento indexer:statusandbin/magento indexer:show-mode. The Indexer module also documentsbin/magento indexer:reindex [indexer]for running a selected indexer; use the actual indexer identifier when running it. - Check cron and logs. Verify scheduled processing is healthy if the indexer uses Update by Schedule, and inspect cron and indexer logs for repeated scheduling, errors, or runs that never complete.
- Look for competing work before launching another run. Determine whether imports, other indexing jobs, or overlapping full reindexes are already consuming database resources. Starting overlapping full reindexes is not a useful first diagnostic step.
- Measure dimensions and database pressure. Compare website, customer-group, and shared-catalog combinations with database capacity. Review query duration, temporary-table pressure, locks, memory, and storage during a representative run.
- Test batch changes in a controlled way. If evidence points to batch-related memory pressure, change one setting at a time and compare end-to-end runtime, memory or temporary-table pressure, lock behavior, and storage on a repeatable workload.
- Review product pricing customizations. Check extensions and custom code that hook pricing, product types, or indexing. Compare with the core code for the exact deployed release before attributing a delay to Magento core.
- Inspect page cache separately. Check that public content pages remain cacheable and that the configured cache backend is operating. Do not flush page cache in an attempt to rebuild price-index data.
What to change—and what not to assume
- Do not diagnose runtime from SKU count alone; catalog dimensions and database work are material factors.
- Do not assume smaller batches are always faster. Adobe’s example went faster with a smaller batch for one particular catalog, but another database may behave differently.
- Do not remove website or customer-group availability just to reduce indexing time unless the changed storefront access matches the business rules.
- Do not treat every displayed price as a direct read from one index table; price rendering can involve context, product type, tax/display configuration, and extensions.
- Do not use full-page cache cleaning as a replacement for indexer processing.
