Mafia III is fundamentally a single-player, offline-capable crime-action game. This FAQ explains realistic playtime estimates, what the current listings establish about multiplayer and cross-play, the contents of Definitive Edition, how to unlock its story expansions, and which online services you actually need.
How long is Mafia 3?
Your total time depends mainly on how much optional district and side content you pursue. GOG displays community estimates from HowLongToBeat rather than an official 2K campaign length. GOG does not show the year in which those estimates were published, so use them as planning ranges, not guarantees or dated performance claims.

These figures are not a fixed timer. District takeovers, optional objectives, exploration and the amount of time you spend experimenting with stealth or combat can move your personal total above or below each range. The 25-hour figure is therefore a reasonable campaign-planning estimate, while 68 hours is the relevant figure if you intend to pursue a completionist run.
Does Mafia 3 have multiplayer?
The current Xbox store listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition labels the game Single player. The reviewed official and store pages do not identify an online co-op, competitive multiplayer or other multiplayer mode. You should therefore buy and plan for a solo experience rather than expecting a second-player campaign.

This is a statement about the modes documented for the listed edition, not a claim that every historical storefront used identical wording. If a regional store page uses different metadata, check its feature list before purchasing; no source reviewed here documents a multiplayer mode for Definitive Edition.
Is Mafia 3 cross-platform?
Cross-play
No cross-play mode is documented in the reviewed sources. Because the game is listed as single-player, there is no documented multiplayer session for players on different platforms to join. Treat “cross-platform” claims on an individual listing cautiously: the available evidence supports solo play, not cross-platform online interaction.
Cross-save and cross-progression
Cross-save, cloud progression shared between platforms and account-based save transfer were not answered by the official pages reviewed. Do not infer that saves move between PlayStation, Xbox, PC or generations simply because the game can be played offline, and do not confuse a platform’s cloud-save feature with cross-platform progression.
What DLC comes with Mafia 3 Definitive Edition?
Definitive Edition bundles the base game with three story expansions and two bonus packs. The package contents are:

When comparing two listings, look for the “Definitive Edition” designation and verify that the listing describes the bundled expansions and packs. A base-game listing with a similar name is not evidence that these five items are included.

How do I start the Mafia 3 DLC?
The story expansions are not available immediately in a new save. 2K’s support guidance gives a specific progression gate:
- Complete the mission “The Sit Down.”
- Make sure all three lieutenants are by Lincoln’s side.
- Open the in-game map and travel to the indicated location for the DLC mission. The location appears as the relevant marker once the prerequisite is met.
Reaching the first condition without having all three lieutenants will not satisfy the stated requirement. If the marker is absent, return to the campaign and check both prerequisites before assuming that the content is missing or that the installation failed.

According to 2K’s Mafia III: FAQ, you do not need PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core or an internet connection to play the game “straight out of the box.” The support answer was published October 14, 2016 and updated July 8, 2026. The same guidance recommends connecting to the internet for patches and updates.
In practical terms, the single-player campaign can be started offline after installation. An internet connection remains useful when you need to download a patch, obtain platform-delivered DLC or troubleshoot a store entitlement. The offline statement does not establish cross-save, cross-progression or any online mode.
Which platforms and editions should existing owners know about?
2K’s legacy-entitlement information covers PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam owners. Existing owners on those platforms received Definitive Edition at no extra charge under the stated program. The delivery method differed by platform:

These instructions describe the platforms named in 2K’s FAQ; they may not cover every later store migration, regional catalog or backward-compatibility arrangement. The reviewed Xbox listing names Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and identifies the game as single-player, but store availability and labels can vary by region.
At launch, 2K described the original Deluxe Edition as a digital release with limited physical retail availability. That historical statement does not prove that a physical copy is currently stocked in your country. For a new purchase, verify the exact platform, edition name, disc or download format and included add-ons on the live listing before paying.
How do loyalty, choices and wiretaps affect progression?
The official FAQ describes several systems that can change both your tools and the way a district takeover unfolds.
Lieutenant loyalty and upgrades
Weapon and vehicle attribute upgrades become available as your lieutenants’ loyalty rises. Loyalty is therefore more than a narrative meter: it can affect the practical capabilities available during play. If an upgrade appears unavailable, review the relevant lieutenant relationship rather than assuming that the item is tied only to story level.
Choices and narrative balance
Your decisions can alter gameplay and the narrative. The FAQ specifically notes that a stealth approach affects gameplay and that balancing the lieutenants’ loyalty affects narrative outcomes. You are not required to treat every district decision as a purely cosmetic choice; consider both the immediate tactical result and its effect on your relationships.

Wiretaps and racket bosses
Wiretaps reveal nearby enemies and collectibles on the map. In a district where a wiretap is active, attempting to take over a racket can sometimes give you the option to recruit its boss, increasing total earnings. Without the wiretap information, the FAQ says you have no option except killing the boss when confronted. If you are trying to maximize income or preserve a recruitment option, activate the relevant wiretap before committing to the racket takeover.
Finding fuses
Nearby fuses are placed around junction boxes. The map’s Intel View can reveal them, so use that view when you need to locate a fuse instead of searching every street at random.

Scoped aiming
2K’s controller instructions specify that, while in scope mode, you use the Left Control Stick on an Xbox controller or press L3 on PlayStation 4 to aim through the scope. These instructions apply to the controller layouts described by the FAQ; a remapped control scheme can change the button you see in your own settings.
Linking My2K
To connect a My2K account, pause the game, open the Game Menu and select Link My2K. Linking an account is separate from multiplayer and does not, by itself, prove that saves or progression transfer between platforms.

What should I check if DLC or updates are not appearing?
Use this order so that an installation issue is not confused with a progression gate:
- Check the product name in your library or receipt. It should identify Definitive Edition, or your account should show the separate DLC entitlements described for your platform.
- On PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, open the platform store or library and look for the DLC content pack associated with the existing game entitlement. On Steam, check the game’s DLC list because the legacy entitlement was described as automatic.
- Launch the game and complete “The Sit Down,” then verify that all three lieutenants are by Lincoln’s side.
- Return to the map and look for the indicated DLC location. The mission marker is progression-dependent, so reinstalling before meeting both conditions may not change what appears in-game.
- Connect to the internet and install any available platform or game updates, as 2K recommends an online connection for patches even though basic play does not require one.
If a regional store listing, account migration or console-generation transfer falls outside the PS4, Xbox One and Steam guidance above, consult that platform’s current entitlement record rather than assuming that the older legacy instructions apply unchanged.
What is the practical verdict?
Plan on roughly 25 hours for the main campaign or about 40.5 hours if you add a meaningful amount of side content; a completionist attempt is estimated at 68 hours by HowLongToBeat as displayed by GOG. Buy it as a solo game: the current Xbox listing is single-player, and no multiplayer or cross-play mode is documented. Definitive Edition is the complete package for the named story expansions and bonus packs, but the DLC still has to be reached through the campaign gate after “The Sit Down” and all three lieutenants are in place. You can play the installed game without PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core or an internet connection, while an internet connection remains advisable for patches and platform delivery.
