Mafia III: Definitive Edition is the 2016 Mafia III game packaged with its post-launch story expansions and bonus add-ons. It is an expanded bundle, not a ground-up remake of Mafia III. The Xbox product listing names the base game, three story DLCs—Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times—plus the Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack.
If you already own Mafia III, you generally do not need to buy the Definitive Edition again just to get the DLC. 2K Support says console owners can download a free “Mafia III: DLC Content Pack,” while PC DLC should be enabled automatically. Your exact entitlement still depends on the platform, account, region, and product listing shown in your store.

What Mafia III: Definitive Edition actually is
Mafia III: Definitive Edition consolidates Mafia III and its additional content into one edition. The main game remains the 2016 release; the “Definitive Edition” label primarily describes the bundled package and how it is sold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat distinction matters because 2K used different language for the first game in the series. In its 2020 Mafia: Trilogy announcement, 2K called the first Mafia a “built-from-the-ground-up remake.” The same announcement described Mafia III: Definitive Edition through its original bonus add-on content instead. On the evidence available for this edition, it is inaccurate to present Mafia III Definitive Edition as a remake, a rewritten story, or a universal graphics overhaul.
#1 Best Overall
The edition was offered as a standalone purchase and as part of Mafia: Trilogy. Store pages can separate the main-game listing from the downloadable content, so the name of the product you see is not by itself proof that every add-on is installed. Check the itemized contents and your account’s entitlements before paying.
Everything included in the Definitive Edition
The clearest itemized list comes from the Xbox product page. It identifies the main game, three story expansions, and two bonus packs:
| Content | Included item | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Main game | Mafia III | The complete base game is the foundation of the edition. |
| Story DLC | Faster, Baby! | One of the three included story expansions. |
| Story DLC | Stones Unturned | One of the three included story expansions. |
| Story DLC | Sign of the Times | One of the three included story expansions. |
| Bonus pack | Family Kick-Back Pack | Included bonus add-on content. |
| Bonus pack | Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack | Included weapons-related bonus add-on content. |
2K’s trilogy announcement summarizes the package as including all original bonus add-on content. The Xbox listing supplies the specific names above. Together, those descriptions support treating the edition as the base game plus its released story and bonus add-ons, rather than as a separate campaign or a rebuilt version of the game.
What the three story DLC names mean for a buyer
The three expansions are separate story add-ons, not three editions of the main game. Their inclusion means you receive the additional narrative content associated with those packs when your platform recognizes the entitlement. The source material does not establish that the expansions must be played in a particular order, nor does it document a different campaign structure for Definitive Edition, so use the in-game prompts and your platform’s DLC menu for sequencing.

Bonus packs versus story expansions
The Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack are bonus add-ons, while the other three named items are story DLC. That distinction is useful when checking a library: seeing one bonus pack installed does not prove that all three story expansions are present. Verify each item individually in the game’s add-on list or the store’s manage-content screen.
How it differs from the original 2016 release
Mafia III launched in 2016 in multiple launch-era editions. 2K’s version guide described a Standard Edition containing the base game and preorder content, a Digital Deluxe Edition containing the Season Pass, and a Collector’s Edition containing the Season Pass plus physical collectibles. Those were launch-era configurations, not a promise that today’s store pages use the same names or contents.
| Purchase type | What the launch-era information says | How it compares with Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Original Standard Edition | Base game and preorder content | It may not have included every post-release story expansion. |
| Original Digital Deluxe Edition | Base game with the Season Pass | Could provide the add-on entitlement through the pass rather than a later “Definitive” bundle. |
| Original Collector’s Edition | Season Pass plus physical collectibles | Its physical extras are separate from the digital-content packaging used by Definitive Edition. |
| Definitive Edition | Main game, three named story DLCs, and two named bonus packs | Packages the game and add-on content together in a later edition format. |
The practical difference is therefore content ownership and packaging. Someone who bought only the original base game may not have received all later DLC. Someone who bought a launch edition with the Season Pass may already own equivalent add-on entitlements, even if the library does not display the word “Definitive.”

Is Definitive Edition a remake or a major technical revision?
No broad remake claim is supported. The available official descriptions establish bundled content, not a rebuilt engine, a rewritten story, or a guaranteed visual upgrade on every platform. Avoid assuming that the Definitive Edition label means the same type of production work as the first Mafia remake.

There is one platform-specific technical statement: the current Xbox listing describes Mafia III: Definitive Edition on Xbox Series X|S as offering 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. That statement applies to the Xbox listing and should not be generalized automatically to PlayStation or PC. Console generations, patches, display settings, and backward-compatibility behavior can differ.
If you already own Mafia III
2K Support’s instructions, updated July 5, 2023, say existing console owners do not need to purchase Definitive Edition again to enjoy the game’s DLC. Instead, they should find the free DLC pack in the console store. On PC, 2K says the DLC should be enabled automatically.
- Identify the owning account. Sign in to the PlayStation Network, Xbox account, or PC launcher account that owns Mafia III. DLC entitlement is tied to the account and platform, not merely to having the game installed on a different profile.
- Check the edition and platform. Confirm whether your copy is the base game, a Season Pass edition, or a Definitive Edition listing. Also confirm the platform generation and region shown by the store.
- Console owners: search for the add-on. Search your console store for Mafia III: DLC Content Pack. 2K describes this pack as free for existing console owners.
- Open the add-on page. Select the free DLC pack, verify that the store shows your account as eligible, and start the download. If the page asks you to buy the full game, you are probably viewing a different product, signed into another account, or using a store region that does not match the original entitlement.
- Install and manage the content. After downloading, open the platform’s manage-content or add-ons screen and look for the three story DLC names and the bonus packs. Some storefronts list the main game and DLC as separate entries.
- PC owners: launch from the owning account. 2K says PC DLC should be automatically enabled. Restart the launcher and game if the add-ons do not appear immediately, then confirm that you are using the same account that owns Mafia III.
- Use current store prompts if labels differ. 2K’s instructions were updated in 2023, and storefront interfaces can change. Follow the current download, restore-license, or manage-content wording displayed by your platform rather than relying on an old menu name.
What to do when an owned DLC pack is missing
- Check the purchase history and library for the owning account.
- Make sure the game and DLC are from the same platform and region. A disc or code from one region may not match a store entitlement from another.
- Open the game’s add-on management screen and verify whether the content is installed but disabled.
- Restart the console or PC launcher after the entitlement is recognized.
- Do not buy the full Definitive Edition immediately if the store offers a free DLC Content Pack to your existing console account.
- If the store still does not recognize ownership, contact the platform or 2K Support with the account, platform, and purchase details.
Platforms, listings, and compatibility
2K’s 2020 trilogy announcement placed Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, both as a standalone product and within Mafia: Trilogy. The PlayStation product page reviewed for this edition identifies a PS4 listing. Its captured store text also says “Main game only. DLC available for free separately,” illustrating why readers should inspect the exact product page instead of assuming that every storefront presents the bundle identically.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Treat that as an Xbox-specific listing statement. It does not establish identical performance or feature details for PlayStation or PC.
Store prices, sale periods, stock, and the wording of digital and physical listings change. Before buying, check the product page for your exact platform and confirm whether it says the three story DLCs and two bonus packs are included, or whether the DLC is offered as a separate free download.
Standalone purchase or Mafia: Trilogy?
Choose the standalone Definitive Edition when you want Mafia III and its add-ons without buying the other two games. Choose Mafia: Trilogy when you also want the series collection. Both purchase paths were officially offered, but the precise SKU, platform, and included entitlements can vary by storefront. Read the itemized contents on the page you are about to purchase.
If you already own Mafia III and are considering the trilogy only for the DLC, check your free console DLC entitlement or PC library first. Repurchasing a collection may not be necessary to obtain content your account already owns.
Physical-disc and digital-copy checks
A disc can establish ownership of the base game while the downloadable add-ons remain separate store entitlements. Conversely, a digital bundle can show the game in your library while individual DLC entries still require installation. When shopping for a physical copy, search using the exact platform—for example, “Mafia III Definitive Edition PS4”—and confirm that the listing describes a physical product rather than a download code or a base-game-only package.

Who should buy it?
Buy Definitive Edition if you are new to Mafia III
It is the simplest way to obtain the base game and the named story and bonus content in one package, provided your platform’s listing confirms those inclusions.
Consider the original copy first if you already own Mafia III
Existing console owners may download the DLC Content Pack for free, and PC DLC should be enabled automatically according to 2K Support. Check your library before spending money on a second copy.
Choose the trilogy only when you want the other Mafia games too
The trilogy is a collection option, not a required upgrade path for Mafia III owners seeking its add-ons.

Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Definitive” means a remake. The evidence supports a content bundle, not a ground-up remake of Mafia III.
- Every original copy lacks DLC. Launch-era Deluxe and Collector’s editions included the Season Pass, so some owners already have the add-ons.
- A listed game automatically includes installed DLC. Store pages may show the main game with DLC available separately.
- Xbox Series X|S details apply everywhere. The 60 FPS and technical-improvement statement is specific to the current Xbox listing.
- Buying the edition is the only way to get the expansions. 2K provides a free console DLC download for eligible existing owners and automatic PC enablement guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mafia III Definitive Edition include all three story expansions?
Yes. The Xbox listing names Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times, along with the Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack.
Do I need to rebuy Mafia III Definitive Edition if I own the original game?
Usually not for the DLC. 2K Support says existing console owners can download the free Mafia III: DLC Content Pack, while PC DLC should be enabled automatically. Verify your account and platform entitlement first.
Is Mafia III Definitive Edition a remake?
No. Official descriptions support a bundled edition of the 2016 game and its add-ons, not a ground-up remake. Xbox Series X|S has a listing that mentions 60 FPS and technical improvements, but that statement is platform-specific.
